Hello Everyone!! Well, it happened again. A huge apology for not posting much this summer! I am so enjoying being home. I am just feeling...
Ok, my friends... I'm sure you've all seen Reagan's visual lesson plans that she got from Deedee.... Well.... A few of us decided to give it a try too! Plus, this might help me to be better planned out and ready for Mondays - ha! Well... Most of my plans come from other fabulous bloggers out there! I've found so many fabulous things, that this week, I decided not to make a unit, just little things here and there, which I've included links for... When you click on the plans, it'll take you to the PDF, and you can click on the pictures and links to go to that product. Make sure you DOWNLOAD the document so you can get to all the links! This isn't EVERYTHING that I do, but I didn't want to bombard you with it all at once... For Phonics- I will be using the Phonics Poem book from scholastic - LOVE it! And it's really helping with fluency. We'll also be doing some activities with Room on the Broom - click the pics in the plans to grab the freebies! And I'll be doing Christie's unit for Scaredy-Cat, Splat! For my centers this week - I've got a little something from everyone in there - LOVE it! I also made a quick little compare/contrast writing activity - click the pic in the plans to grab this freebie too! For Writing?? Starting with Lori's Halloween writing activity and then I'm doing the same book from Debbie that I did last year - except this year, I'll be teaching it instead of my intern - In fact...this is about when she took over completely, so now I get to teach during my favorite time of year - yay! Not that I didn't LOVE having her, but you know...as a teacher, there are just certain things you like to teach and October - December is my favorite time. Remember - you can get to their products when you download the plans! NOW... For math and Science/Social Studies As for my actual Whole Groups plans? I have an idea, BUT, I don't like to set in stone what I'm doing because if they don't get one of the lessons, I'm not going to move on to the next one...And this week, we're working on 2-digit plus 2-digit addition, so I'm sure it'll take longer than the series gives me to teach it. BUT, I am going to be using my Tasty Facts packs and my Numbers Every Day pack each day! For Science - we're going to be finishing up the LAST of the Bat unit And we're going to be review habitats and working on my Habitats for Sale activity. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ and one last thing! My girl, Holly is having a giveaway! Just a few days left - so go enter and wish her happy bloggy-birthday!

We have been waiting for the Monsters University movie to come out since we heard about it last year. Monsters Inc. is one of our favorite movies of all time. To get everyone excited, we hosted a MU party for all our friend this week. It was super fun! First I emailed out "Enrollment Applications" to everyone. Each "monster" was to fill out an application and submit it to my by a certain date. There is actually a Monsters University website that totally looks like a real college website! Once I received all the applications, I emailed an "Acceptance" letter with all the details: when Freshman orientation was, a schedule, campus map, and list of items to bring. I gathered a team of older girls together to be my: We even made shirts We transformed our yard into the MU college campus. The front yard was set up with a table, banners, balloons, signs for registration. I had two girls out front "checking" people in. I totally spaced taking pictures of this. We had almost 30 kids! The night before we stayed up till midnight creating a monster for everyone and creating a laminated MU Student ID card. Disney has a website called Create-A-Monster. It is so much fun. You can pick your monster body, skin, fur, hair, eyes, horns, etc. Then you type in your first name and last initial and it generates a monster last name. We did this for all 30 kids. This is me, Amanda Needleman. Now how do those Disney people know I sew!!! On the website you can also generate an ID card like this one: The faculty had these ones: We laminated each card and placed it in an ID card holder. The back of the ID looks like this. I made a fake barcode with a barcode font. I put 8 circles and when they went to each station they got a little Monster sticker to to put in the circle. When the children were all checked in they pinned on their name tag. They were all totally into this!! As the children walked along the side of the house to get to the backyard, we made a sign with all the incoming freshman. I printed out each monster and then after the party, they could take it home (that's why some are missing.) We also had a meet the faculty poster and all the faculty members signed it. We set up the MU campus like this: Cafeteria, Library, Scare Floor, Gym, Student Center, and Art Club. This is where you can let your imagination go crazy. I had so many ideas of what we could do - with this large of a group I had to scale back. Cafeteria The cafeteria was fun. We were just open for snacks. I made popcorn balls - you can't tell but they were neon green. Jell-O brand came out with Monsters University Jell-O & Jell-O molds. The green was s'lime and the blue was Berry Scary. We also had Monsters University fruit snacks. For the drinks, I got purple and green Hawaiian Punch water bottle mixes and the children could mix their own drinks. I decorated with a few doors. Student Center I found this poster at Wal Mart - I love all the monsters! At the student center the moms hung out and talked. Towards the end of the party we had a little "School Dance". We played scare dance. It's like freeze dance, only when you freeze, you have to do a "Scare" pose. Art Club The Art Club was a hit. I had river rocks, paint & googley eyes. Yep, we made monster rocks. They turned out super cute! The GYM At the gym we played a version of "Horse" only "Scare". The Scare Floor I think this was the biggest hit! We turned our shed into the scare floor. The children sat around and one would go into the shed (which is pretty scary) then come out and try to do their best "scare". The Library The library was a blanket on the grass. I bought this cute Monsters University story book at Sam's Club. It has about 10 different stories with pictures. The children sat around while on of our faculty read it to them. I thought it would be cute to make monster bookmarks - but I ran out of time. Most of the children brought plain T-shirts. During the party I ironed on an MU. Don't they all look cute!! We will all be wearing them to the movies on Friday!! The hot pink came out cute I love the green & white stripes too (Target). It was a really fun party. Can't wait to go to the movie now!!!
Hannah Peel has been in the studio this week recording an EP of her lovely songs with Mikey in the other room. We moved the Virtua upstairs and brought the new [old] Soundcraft series 2 analog desk down, and this was it's debut session. I think Mike has finally warmed to the joys of analog consoles. Hanna's stuff is really good, and one of her unique ideas is making little music box songs by manually punching holes in a music-box-paper-reader-roll thing. She also had a go on the CS80 in my room for a wonky bit in one of her songs Here she is wearing Geoff Dolman's lab specs and tweaking the Big Moog

I love math. It's my favorite time of day and my favorite to teach. Mostly because it seems like every year, my kids come to me and hate math. I'm not sure why, really. But when they leave me, Math is all they ever talk about! This was a fun activity we did in October when teaching arrays. There are many variations you can do with it and it will still be just as cute. After learning about arrays from our math program, students then decided what kind of monster they wanted to create. {beforehand, I copied a variety of monster shapes-all are in my packet-on a variety of colored cardstock, along with a variety of color cardstock copies of the body parts for the monsters} Then, each kid chose a card at random that told them their array line up (5 rows of 3, etc). They needed to figure out how many eyes to get {I bought a container at Michael's with my coupon for them to use. I could not find a big set of ones to peel and stick.... so we had a lot of practice using Elmers runny glue! Totally set apart those who have great fine motor control, and those who still need a LOT of practice! Before the gluing, however, they had to show me how their eyes will line up. Once they got the "go ahead" from me, the glueing commenced. After their monster was done, they had to write information about their Monster on their cards. {I gave them a "scrap copy" that they got checked by me first to make sure things were spelled well enough, etc.... then they got their good, cardstock copy to write on afterwards} The bulletin board was just AMAZING! More practice we did with our arrays is that we painted with q-tips on paper (again, we copied onto cardstock to help keeping the paint from soaking through the paper). Kids chose cards again and had to dot the array in their choice of colors. After dotting their arrays, they had to write the addition sentence. I made clean up a breeze by having bulletin board paper down at each group. They left the q-tips and I just folded it all up and put it in the trash. If you like these activities and would want to try it out in your classroom, check out my packet in my TPT store!
Listening and following verbal or oral directions is an important skill that many students lack. You may relate to Charlie Brown's teacher after going over step-by-step directions. Students often hear the sound the teacher's voice is making, but fail to tune into the meaning of the words. When students aren't actively listening, they miss important information that can impact their academic AND behavior in the classroom. One way you can help your students practice active listening so they will follow directions is with a fun activity called Listen and Draw. Listen and Draw is a great activity to do with your class at the beginning of the year when you are teaching class procedures. Include these with your plans after breaks as a warmup plus a good reminder about practicing listening and following directions. Grab a free copy of FREE Listen & Draw - Following Directions Activity. Sources to make my blog post graphics can be found HERE. Click HERE to read my blog's disclosure statement.
