As someone who isn’t afraid to try new things, I’ve tried my hand quite a few side income ventures. Knowing this about me, friends often come to me for advice on what to do to make a little extra cash on the side. For some reason, I like to think of potential income ideas in terms of making $500 extra per month, or even $1,000 more. Something about those nice round large numbers seems appealing. :) How to Make an Extra $500, $700, or even $1000 a Month Setting out to make a $500-$1,000 monthly chunk of cash (or

The Grocery Game is a highly engaging math activity that provides students with a hands-on way to practice counting money! It includes options for differentiation to meet the needs of a variety of students. WHO IS THIS RESOURCE FOR? Students learning to count sets of mixed coins Students learning to count sets of like coins Hands-on learners who need a more engaging way to practice this skill Special ed students or adults learning the life skills of shopping, budgeting, and making food choices Players take turns picking food cards to fill up their grocery bags. The goal is to purchase one food from each group. Every food card has a price, so students must pay for each item by counting out the correct amount of money from their "wallets." Once all players have filled their bags, they all count their money to see who has the most left. For added challenge, two coupon cards allow players to subtract money from the purchase prices. This game lets students apply math skills in a real-life scenario rather than just completing worksheets. It can be played over and over again for repeated practice. WHAT IS INCLUDED? game mats banker's mat coin value reference cards food cards coupon cards printable money OPTIONS FOR DIFFERENTIATION: The file also includes a set of food cards without prices so you can customize them with different money amounts if you wish. This allows your students to play the game with prices ending in zeros (or fives) if you want to simplify it. If you don't have play money to use along with this game, printable money is included. However, plastic coins like those included in many math kits work much better. I love using games to teach math because it is a highly effective way to reinforce important skills and the kids love it! This game has been a favorite of my class every year. It is truly fun to play and can be enjoyed by students at various levels. HOW ARE OTHER TEACHERS USING THIS RESOURCE? ❤️ "My GT students loved the game. Kept asking to play again :)" - Janice ❤️ "This was a life saver for my career skills class. I used the blank cards to differentiate for my 2 groups. Using one group to count coins up to .10 and then my other group did mixed bills and coins! They loved it, this will be a regular in our rotation!" ❤️ "So this is about the only time my clients LOVE to do math! They enjoy choosing their own groceries. The stimuli that come with this set are really wonderful. Kids love it. Add your own good quality play money. I also have checks for older kids. I utilize two functional math skills, estimating and calculator use. I'm thinking that I might add an additional functional skill, making a grocery list prior to "shopping" at the store. This is really a great math teaching tool and it inspires lots of other great ideas. Thanks!" - Carrie P. This is the U.S. version of the game. Since we covered the basics of saving money on groceries (i.e. learning sale cycles) now it's time to add in the coupons. To start you have to get the Sunday paper. A few personal notes/thoughts on newspaper coupons: Newspapers only guarantee inserts to subscribers. Always check your newspaper for coupons before buying at grocery store or paper box. It doesn't mean someone stole them, it could be that there just weren't enough inserts sent from the publishers that week (inserts are not printed locally). You DON'T need a ton of papers! How to save money, frugality
Sponsored Building up a savings account can be difficult for people in their 20s and early 30s. A lot of us are new in our careers and not earning the "big bucks" just yet, some are still recovering from student loan debt, and others are just starting to learn the intricacies of budgeting and money stuff. I've always been financially aware, but I didn't really worry about saving money in my 20s—I wanted to travel the world! So travel (and spend money on travel) I did. But now that I'm a little older I've started to worry that I don't have much of an emergency savings—I'd like to think that I'm invincible, but the truth is that emergencies (and unexpected expenses) do happen and it's better to be prepared than not. With than in mind, I'm challenging myself to save an extra $1000 in 2015 to give myself a bit of financial peace of mind, and I think I've come up with a feasible way to do it! To some of you $1000 may not sound like a lot, but for me it can be challenging to put aside extra money because of my endless student loan payments (sigh) and living in a really expensive city (double sigh). Setting aside small amounts of money on a regular basis is less of a burden for me than plunking down hundreds of dollars at once, so that's how I've structured my savings strategy. So without further ado, here's my plan: I've started and ended the year with very low amounts because that's when most people's financial burden is the highest—sometimes it takes a bit to recover from holiday gifting and travel expenses, you know? But the sooner you start saving on a regular basis, the easier it is to get into the habit—even if it's only a few dollars per week. Already have a healthy emergency fund? Here are few other things you could do with $1000: Set it aside as a "holiday gift fund" to take the edge off shopping next year Contribute it towards education costs (college ain't cheap, man) Pay off debt Use it towards travel Save it towards a deposit on a new home Buy yourself something you really, really want (or need), but otherwise might have trouble affording without going into debt. The possibilities are endless! And if you've been thinking of opening up a new checking and/or savings account to squirrel away extra money, now's a great time to do it—Capital One 360 is offering awesome new customer bonuses this Black Friday weekend! 360 Checking: $100 bonus 360 Savings: $100 bonus ShareBuilder: Up to $1,250 bonus (tiered offer) Home Loans: $1,250 off closing costs Refer a Friend: $40 bonus per successful referral Visit their website for more details and terms. I really like Capital One 360 because both their checking and savings are fee-free and earn interest, plus their mobile app makes it super-easy to deposit checks and manage other aspects of your account on the go. Additionally, their Automatic Savings Plan makes it simple to pre-schedule transfers so you don't miss a week. And if you're already a customer, consider taking advantage of the referral deal! Both you and the person you refer will earn a bonus. Speaking of bonuses, having slightly more than $1000 in your little nest egg isn't exactly a bad thing, right? Act quickly if you want to take advantage of these deals though—The Capital One 360 Black Friday sale ends at 11:59ET on December 1st, 2014! Do you have an emergency savings account?
