Title: Plaka - Anafiotika (Athens Greece) If there’s one place where almost the whole history of Greece -and of Athens- throughout the years is hauntingly present, this is plaka area. A can’t-miss spot of the city of Athens, Plaka was ,and still is, a boiling cauldron of people, ideas, civilizations, and religions. Perhaps the oldest surviving area of the city, on the top of the hill right above Plaka and under the shadow of the Acropolis, lies dormant the little village of Anafiotika. This unique neighborhood in the capital was constructed in the 19th-century, when king Otto, sovereign of the newly established Greek monarchy, decided to revamp the new capital. He invited masons and carpenters from the Cyclades, and notably from Anafi, as Anafiots were thought to be the best builders at the time. The islanders settled on the northern slope of the Acropolis, calling their district Anafiotika, which means the little Anafi, after their homeland.Mimicking the Cycladic architecture, with its stark white cubic houses, flat roofs and colorful shutters and doors, Anafiotika is truly a little island in the Greek metropolis. However, most of the village was destroyed in the 1950s for archaeological research and today, roughly 60 houses remain, which are well worth a visit. If you are visiting Athens and find yourself in the vicinity, we highly recommend you take the time to explore this little oasis where you can escape the crowds of busy Atherns and take in unique views of the Athenian jungle and the Lycabettus hill.Wander through the narrow streets of Anafiotika, admire the many bougainvillea-covered walls but don’t forget to snatch some shots of the Acropolis from a different perspective. Original hand painted water color made by the Greek artist George Papadoperakis. Size(With white frame):35cm X 25cm Without frame( 25cm X 15cm) Papadoperakis was born in Knossos (Crete), in 1940. With an inherent tendency to the visual arts, Papadoperakis showed a special interest in painting and particularly in watercolor painting (aquarelle). His aquarelles usually depict the luminous landscape of the Greek islands, the Greek countryside and parts of Athens that are closely related to the ancient history of the city. The discipline and the practice acquired, coupled with an unwavering love for the medium, have led Papadoperakis to study the watercolor technique in detail and create faithful representations of the Greek landscape and tradition. Through his art, he contributes, also, to the furtherance of Greek culture abroad. The aquarelle is a difficult technique and exacts time and dedication from its practitioners. Due to the long years he has spent studying his craft, Papadoperakis has gained a valuable familiarity with his materials, resulting in a unique depiction of his themes on the paper. We are more than pleased to represent George Papadoperakis’s work in “Pandora Art Gallery”.
