This winter I'm in a bit of a sewing slump. I've decided instead of buying more fabric--I want to use what I have on hand, but use it differently. I don't have lots of solids, but I do have lots of fabric. Research: I've been gathering photo ideas to build Modern Scrappy Quilts this year. I'm looking for random--unexpected color combinations and simple construction. Here are some quilt photos from Pinterest that caught my eye. This first one I like. Its simple, simple construction. Take an oversized square, slice it, add some skinny strips, slice it again, and more skinny strips, and then square it up with a 10.5" sq. or 12.5" sq. acrylic template. No rules, just slicing and sewing. No sashing. 📷 The quilt below is so do-able as far as construction. Random. Improv. Beyond the white-black-gray bits for contrast, I see ORANGE dotted with this and that accent colors. Going shopping out of my own stash is fun. Using up lots of sub assemblies already sewn and ready to modify and use in another quilt. I am aware "stash diving" makes a huge mess in the studio. 📷 📷 Calling all Squares . . . calling all squares . . . come in squares. Above is the perfect solution for using up a half yard of this and that. Anything goes . . . but I'm drawn to the use of green, red, and papersack colors in this one. Works for me. 📷 Certainly I've collected lots of silly themes and strange patterns fabrics like this quilt shown above. What is most interesting? Look at the use of red and white fabrics paired with those weird fabrics. Liberally repeating red and white fabrics pull it all together, making sense of all the other weird fabrics that were added. It could just as well be blue and white fabrics paired with the weird fabrics. What I like most about this scrappy quilt is its simple construction, no sashing, alternating four patch. This light airy quilt is so pretty. I think I'll try this quilt concept right away!

'Modern Curves' by Anita Shackelford - Tumbler Quilt Sometimes I find a new digital quilting pattern which becomes flavour of the month here at Fabadashery Long Arm quilting. This time around it is 'Modern Curves' by Anita Shackelford. 'Modern Curves' quilting pattern by Anita Shackelford There are plenty of patterns out there with flowers, feathers and fancy swirls, but like this simple square quilt, sometimes a quilt top needs to be quilted, but doesn't necessarily need an all over pattern which is going to alter it character significantly. The simple undulating lines of 'Modern Curves' seems to achieve this. 'Modern Curves' by Anita Shackelford - Tumbler Quilt After completing the Allietare Mystery quilt, I decided to use the scrap leftovers to make a small green tumbler quilt. It was quick to come together and once on the APQS quilting frame quick to quilt. It didn't really have a planned destination, but is just so happens that is co-ordinates nicely with this IKEA stool, so I think it has found a home. Joining up with Crazy Mom Quilts

Today I'm keeping it really simple and sharing five of my favorite, beginner-friendly, modern quilt patterns. If you're just starting out - these are the perfect ones for you! Mudroom Quilt Pattern This quilt pattern is great for beginners because it is repetitive and includes some super simple blocks. There also aren't many colors that need to be selected, so that keeps things super simple! Leaded Light Quilt Pattern I know I shouldn't choose favorites but this is my favorite! (Shh... don't tell the others!) This pattern includes several options for layout so you could use a variety of colors. The assembly is super simple and repetitive so once you get in the groove - you're golden! Perfect Placement Quilt Pattern This pattern is also very repetitive and the only challenge I would say is staying organized so all your blocks end up in the right place. This modern quilt pattern is also perfect for showing off any prints you want to see! Playroom Quilt Pattern This is another one of my all time favorite quilt patterns. It's so simple and repetitive. There is a lot of room left for trimming so your blocks end up square! I also love that it's only two colors so the decision making process is super easy up front. Close-Knit Quilt Pattern This pattern is starting to become a favorite of mine just because I love how many varieties there are! You can choose so many different colors for this quilt and it looks totally different. It makes a pretty big baby size quilt which I also love! I've made this one quite a few times and am always pleasantly surprised with how fast it goes! You might also enjoy reading: A Guide to Beginner Quilting What is Modern Quilting? Sewing Studio Tour

Finally! I have finished my sample, so I can share my exciting project with you all! Introducing my first finish of 2012, Easy Going Modern. It's on the roster over at Patchwork Posse as a Workshop beginning February 2nd. Included in the $8 workshop cost is exclusive access to the pattern during the workshop, as well as support from me in the discussion forums, which are available only to workshop participants. I'll be including a Layer Cake variation as well as a bonus project for using scraps to make a pillow cover. Exciting, eh?? Easy Going Modern is a nice lap size quilt - 56" x 78" or so - perfect for snuggling on the couch. I quilted it with a really quick and easy wavy line that I did with my walking foot. Thread is Aurifil 50wt in a subtly variegated yellow. This whole project is quick and easy - fabulous for a beginner, or for a more experienced quilter to whip up in a weekend. The back's layout mimics the front, but in larger scale: My daughter gives it a big smile, and I'm absolutely thrilled with it, too. I used Kona solids for the front: Carribbean, Curry and White. The back is Kona White and a print that is perfect for this quilt's recipients. It's bound in Kona White as well. I'm happily linking up to Manic Monday, Sew Modern Monday and Fabric Tuesday (buttons over on my sidebar). Edited to add that I am also linking over at Quilt Matters' TGIFF linky. EDITED again to add: I've been featured on Modern Day Quilts! Woot! Thank you, Heather!

Happy Needle and Thread Thursday, y'all! You might remember that I shared this humongous Anna Maria Horner quilt top way back in October of last year, but I am so excited to finally share the finish with you. I call this pattern 2-4-6, and if you're interested in the block measurements, you can check out my post HERE. This king size quilt is a whopping 108" square, and because I am completely certain of my limitations, I had my extremely talented friend, Teresa at Quilts2AT Studio, quilt it for me (follow her at tpino on IG). Teresa is a nationally known, award winning quilter and a member of my guild, so when I finished wrestling with the top and backing of this behemoth, I happily passed it off to her so she could work her magic. Since this quilt is so simple in its design, I decided to choose a paisley loop quilting design with a little flourish to soften the squares a little bit. I think it really goes nicely with the AMH prints too. Speaking of prints- in case you're wondering, this quilt contains 125 different Anna Maria fabrics. The complete Folk Song, Mod Corsage, Loominous, True Colors, and Fibs and Fables collections are represented, as well as a few prints from LouLouThi and Honor Roll. Because I thought they blended so well, I even threw in two Amy Butler prints, and two prints from Anna Maria's daughter, Juliana Horner. Can you pick them out? Here is another shot of my precious stack before I had the guts to cut into all of it. That stack totals over 30 yards of fabric! Way more than enough for a king sized, fully reversible quilt, so that's just what I made (plus another throw quilt from the scraps that you can see HERE). It took a little planning to make sure that my leftover pieces were arranged in a way that the quilt would look just as good when flipped over, and I'm so impressed that Teresa was able to load it onto her longarm and perfectly center it with the top. That is hard to do, but she's a rock star! For the binding, I opted for this rich maroon wood grain print, also by Juliana Horner (keeping it in the family as much as possible). The dark fabric creates a perfect frame for the quilt and picks up on lots of the deeper colors in the fabrics. In almost 20 years of quilting, this is the very first quilt I've made that I didn't quilt myself. Everything about a king size quilt is more difficult. Even jobs that seem small, like pressing the quilt top or taking photos, become tedious when the quilt is so monstrously huge. I was so glad to turn the quilting over to someone else, and of course that meant that I got to skip the basting step as well! Basting is the devil, so a big whoop! whoop! for that. For longarm quilting, the backing has to be made a little bigger than I usually need for basting and domestic machine quilting, so I actually still have some small scraps left after squaring the quilt. Don't worry though, they will not be going to waste. I already have a little project in mind for them. I have been happily sleeping under this quilt for the past few nights, and let me tell you- I could not love it more. From collecting the fabrics to putting the final stitch in the binding, and finally snuggling under it at night, this huge quilt felt like an epic journey, so I'm calling it Epic. Okay then, friends! Before you link up to show me the epic happenings in your sewing studio, let's take a look at the highlights from last week's party! This lovely chambray log cabin is by Laura at Slice of Pi Quilts. Katie Mae Quilts shared this awesome Oklahoma quilt. What a great design, and the quilting is so amazing! And this pretty Plus Playtime quilt is by Anja Quilts. Just one more thing before we party. I owe you a winner for the 4th of July sponsor giveaway. The winner is comment number 37, rosemaryschild. Congrats! I'll be contacting you soon so you can claim your prize! :) Okay, y'all! It's time to share what you've been working on this week! 1. You can link finished projects or WIP's , but just keep it about quilting and sewing! 2. Link to your specific post (not to your home page!) to make it easier for others. 3. Please remember to spread the word and post my button or a text link. 4. Spread the comment love far and wide! 5. Following me is not a requirement to link, but is so very appreciated! *If you're new to the party, here's a helpful tip for linking up- select "Auto Crop" when selecting your thumbnail photo. For some reason, trying to crop your own image results in the dreaded "white question mark box," and we definitely want to see your awesome work! :)

I have to be honest, I had always looked at beautifully hand-quilted quilts and thought, “Well, that’s just crazy.” Although I loved the look feel and texture that hand quilting added to a project, I never saw myself doing such intricate work. The funny thing is, I love hand embroidery. Ah, the slow pace, the relaxation of having a project to work on at all times (I always have a hand embroidery project in my purse); and the satisfaction of finishing something that only required a simple needle and thread. I don’t know why it took my so long to realize that hand quilting is just one big hand embroidery project and usually using just one stitch, the running stitch! Hand quilting, especially in the modern quilting movement, has made a big resurgence in the last few years. Many quilters have discovered the beauty and added texture this simple stitch can add to a project. My personal favorite is big stitch quilting. This isn’t the hand quilting you would see on a traditional Hawaiian quilt or a hand quilted whole cloth quilt. Those quilts are normally done with a thinner thread and very small stitches so the quilted pattern shows through, not the thread. This style also takes exponentially longer to finish. With big stitch quilting, the thread really is the star, and that is why I like to do my big stitch quilting with Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Threads. Sulky 12 wt. Cotton is equal to about 2 strands of embroidery floss, so it will stand out nicely on the project, and the colors are luscious! Whether I am just doing several lines of big stitch quilting on some white fabric, Or quilting a pieced quilt top, This thread really changes an ordinary project into an extraordinary piece. The beauty of this is I am just doing a standard running stitch! Are you looking to try something new? Then join me in the Slow Stitch Movement. Check out all of Sulky’s 12 Wt. Cotton thread here and let’s start stitching! Happy Sewing.
