About The Artwork This artwork series (Stats 101) was inspired by an old disregarded text book "Understanding Statistics" I found while walking in the rain down at Wreck Beach at UBC over Christmas 2021 while my daughter was writing her final exams. The book was wet, torn, written in and I felt embodied the feeling of revulsion many students feel for courses they are forced to take out of obligatory academic requirements. I took the book home, dried it, and slowly tore the pages apart, enjoying the art of the math words and symbols and playing around with them first in these little 9" x 12" Little Gems Series paintings, and then really going for it and painting a large 60" x 40" x 1.5" painting on canvas in the same theme. This beautiful encaustic assemblage measures 12" by 12" by 1.5" and has an ethereal quality to it. It has hundreds of delicate shredded strips covering it implying that this is a mysterious tablet from ancient times. The encaustic is hot wax applied and manipulated by a heat gun. It creates a milky veil, and permanent quality to the piece. The shading was created using graphite. A sophisticated work of art for a reasonable price. Please see all four photos.

Steve Baris is interested in the interconnections of the built environment and spatial experience. His artwork is a response to a largely overlooked type of landscape that is emerging along our metropolitan fringes. These pockets of former fields, farms and forests are rapidly transforming into constellations of massive horizontal buildings known as "distribution" or "fulfillment" centers. This is a thoroughly new kind of liminal space, re-tooled solely to facilitate the rapid, frictionless flow of commodities to and from practically anywhere-high performing, expertly engineered, leveled, paved and interconnected by ever-expanding networks of highways and communication systems. He has always been sensitive to the spatial surround and is consistently struck by the spatial disorientation he feels driving through these areas. Here, there is so much space and so few points of access: so much mobility yet so constricted and channeled. It was here that he began to observe these remarkable buildings and their thorough transformation of the surrounding countryside. The imposing structures that define the distribution centers present a perfect geometric vocabulary for visualizing the mostly invisible economic forces that are transforming these regions. As with so much art from the most ancient to the contemporary, his pieces attempt to realize a provisional join between the visible and the invisible, the concrete and the conceptual. Space, his leading protagonist, is, technically speaking, invisible as are the abstract economic forces determining our access and experience of contemporary space and place. He hopes that his work gives form to these unprecedented spatial experiences. Steven Baris was born in Aberdeen Washington and grew up on various American Indian reservations in Northern California, Montana, and Washington State. He received a B.A. from The Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington and a MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. He lives and teaches art in the Philadelphia area. He has exhibited widely throughout North America and Europe; his work is represented in Denver by Space Gallery, and in Philadelphia by the Pentimenti gallery.

This is the first part of a two-part post on the works of Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies. Tàpies was born in 1923 in Barcelona. His adolescence was disrupted by the Spanish Civil War and a serious illness that lasted two years. Tàpies began to study law in Barcelona in 1944 but two years later decided instead to devote himself exclusively to art. He was essentially self-taught as a painter; the few art classes he attended left little impression on him. Shortly after deciding to become an artist, he began attending clandestine meetings of the Blaus, an iconoclastic group of Catalan artists and writers who produced the review Dau al Set. Tàpies’s early work was influenced by the art of Max Ernst, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró, and by Eastern philosophy. His art was exhibited for the first time in the controversial Salo d’Octubre in Barcelona in 1948. He soon began to develop a recognisable personal style related to matière painting, or Art Informel, a movement that focused on the materials of art-making. The approach resulted in textural richness, but its more important aim was the exploration of the transformative qualities of matter. Tàpies freely adopted bits of detritus, earth, and stone – mediums that evoke solidity and mass – in his large-scale works. In 1950, his first solo show was held at the Galeries Laietanes, Barcelona, and he was included in the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh. That same year, the French government awarded Tàpies a scholarship that enabled him to spend a year in Paris. His first solo show in New York was presented in 1953 at the gallery of Martha Jackson, who arranged for his work to be shown the following year in various galleries around the United States. During the 1950s and 1960s, Tàpies exhibited in major museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. In 1966, he began his collection of writings, La practica de l’art. In 1969, he and the poet Joan Brossa published their book, Frègoli; a second collaborative effort, Nocturn Matinal, appeared the following year. Tàpies received the Rubens Prize of Siegen, Germany, in 1972. Retrospective exhibitions were presented at the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, in 1973 and at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, in 1977. The following year, he published his prize-winning autobiography, Memòria personal. In the early 1980s, he continued diversifying his mediums, producing his first ceramic sculptures and designing sets for Jacques Dupin’s play L’Eboulement. By 1992, three volumes of the catalogue raisonné of Tàpies’s work had been published. The following year, he and Cristina Iglesias represented Spain at the Venice Biennale, where his installation was awarded the Leone d’Oro. A retrospective exhibition was presented at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum SoHo, New York, in 1994-5. In 2000 the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid also organised a major retrospective of the artist’s work. About The Artwork This painting is a part of the collection called ISHONI? that is inspired by Japan and its minimalism. When translated from Japanese, it means "together". The question mark signifies the extent that the painting was affected by two artists - Iveta Hankova and Jakub Volka. The benefits of interacting with the other, deepening the knowledge, and understanding are transferred to the visual aspect. When one makes a move, the other responds, altering the original vision, and discovering a new form. By mutual improvisation, the technique of encountering the feelings of the other comes into being. The whole is then an imprint of the unanswered thoughts.
