Here are 15 MLK Jr. Day activities for kids to help us remember the great man, the dream he shared and the lessons he taught us.

MLK Day is right around the corner and we've been busy trying to find some last minute {and simple!} ideas that you can use in the classroom as you and your kiddos explore the life and legacy of this important historical figure! * * * The story of Dr. King offers a powerful example of how one person who stands up for what they believe in/what is right can make a difference. As you explore the life of Martin Luther King Jr this January - his ideals, his hopes, and his impact - empower your students with the knowledge that, they too, have the power to make a difference in their families, their school/community, and even the world! Constructing a dream mobile is a great way to help your students make a meaningful connection with the holiday as well as instill this very idea! We found two variations of the dream mobile and either project would make a fabulous addition to your MLK Day lessons! Individual Dream Mobile Photo Source: Mrs. Prince & Co. Leanne over at Mrs. Prince & Co. has her kiddos create individual mobiles, writing about their dreams for their school, community, and world. If you're interested in completing this project, she offers the mobile printables for FREE over at her blog, so set-up is sure to be easy peasy! Collaborative Dream Mobile Photo Source: 4th Grade Frolics Tara of 4th Grade Frolics invites her students to work together to create a class mobile displaying their dreams for the world. Invited to think about various topics - freedom, equality, fairness, unity, etc. - students wrote about what these dreams might look like and their hopes for the world! Hello Everyone! It is so nice to have time to put some finishing touches on a couple of units that we have coming up! Another historical figure we will study after Eleanor Roosevelt is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a nation we celebrate his life daily! Thank you Dr. King! Officially we celebrate on the third Monday of January. I have posted about our activities before, but I went through and cleaned up, and added to my unit. Here are some pics from the updated unit! We had fun integrating reading and social studies and are finding it a natural way to teach and get everything in. This next unit is about other important historical figures. It includes posters about Alexander Graham Bell, Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Garrett Morgan, and Richard Allen along with reading strategy practice activities. It also includes an invention home project packet for kids. The unit ended up to be over 50 pages! I am excited to include this unit in our curriculum in a few weeks!! In the majority of classrooms that I walked into today, teachers were discussing Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with their students. I loved hearing all of their ideas of what we can do to honor Dr. King's memory. If you are spending your week working on MLK activities, here are a few ideas. First up, a companion pack to accompany the book "Martin Luther King Jr." by Marion Dane Bauer. This packet includes: 12 listening comprehension questions related to the story, 20 association and/or compare/contrast cards, 8 past tense verb pairs, 11 past tense verb pairs, 1 character description sheet, 9 vocabulary and definition match cards, and 18 fact vs. opinion cards! If you'd like to pick up this activity, you can do so here! If you're looking for an MLK activity to target similes, look no further! First, take a large piece of constriction paper and fold both sides of it into the center. Then, trace two hands and glue them on the front. Next, make a list of all of the characteristics that MLK possessed and make a simile list! Here's ours, but I'm sure you can think of many more qualities. Finally, go to town filling in the blanks to compare MLK to other people and things using similes! I hope that you find this activity useful!
