This week I am doing a camp focused completely on sculpture work through the North Vancouver Community Arts Council. I am very excited since I usually only do one sculpture project during a week camp and with a WHOLE WEEK of sculpture projects, I get to try a lot of things I just haven't had time to do before. One of the challenges I set for myself was how to introduce other elements into the sculpture work to add not only variety in the week but also the opportunity for the students to learn some other things too. I also wanted to show all the different ways the students could create a sculpture work, out of items they might not of considered before. Like paper! A flat piece of paper is not necessarily something 6, 7, and 8 year olds would think to go to with creating a 3D work! Yet card stock and a pair of scissors is something that would be readily accessible to them in their daily lives. At first I planned to have them use oil pastels on the paper, but printmaking is one of the activities I have found is the most popular at camp and so thought I would take the opportunity to add relief prints to the project. 8 year old In hindsight, I think monoprints would of been a better choice but in the end the students were very happy with the result. However it was a bit confusing for them at first since they had to think of a relief print for not only the front of their work but also what it would look like from the back AND create a relief for the stand also....both sides. For all of them this was the first time they have had to think of a drawing from not only the front, but the back also...quite a surprise at first and a good lesson in working out all perspectives of an idea. Something they do when working in clay naturally so they don't have to give any real thought too. cat, 8 year old I gave them free range on what they picked as a subject. I showed them the 3 parts they would have to cut and that the stand could be anything associated with their main idea, but they would need 2 of them. Raccoon, 7 year old And so stands were created that were legs and waves!! Mermaid, 6 year old How about this stylin' mermaid? With her hair covering one eye! Even though we pulled a couple of practice prints, this student did not "massage" her plate on the paper with quite enough pressure on the front. However when she got to the back.... She corrected herself brilliantly. On top of that, I think she did a great job working out what the back of her mermaid would look like, right down to the bathing suit tied together! In the future, I think a great project idea might be to have students think of a subject and then tell them to draw it from behind. Cat, 7 year old The students also had their choice of a wide array of colors and surprisingly most of them picked black. I wasn't expecting that to be the popular color choice. I love that the above student made a decision to create a patterned design for her detail work on her cat. I love how many different options I have as a teacher with this project and will definitely be introducing it again in the future using not only printmaking but pastels, paints, or watercolor. As long as you have a heavy stock paper and a pair of scissors, the sky is the limit.
Hello friends :) Happy New Year, lol! I can't believe that I haven't blogged in 6 months. Life has been busy I guess, right?! I recently had a lot of fun in the studio making little paper houses. I posted several photos on my Facebook page. The response has been great and I've had several requests for a tutorial, so I wanted to share that with you all. Here it is... Step 1: I took some mop up paper I had saved. It was basically a piece of paper I had taped down to my work space to protect it from paint, sprays, etc. Step 2: I cut out some basic house shapes, no measuring! Just wing it, more fun indeed. Step 3: I cut some windows and doors out of a contrasting color. This helps them to sort of pop forward from the house itself and adds some interest. Glue these down with a glue stick. Step 4: I used a water soluble journaling pen (Pilot G-2 07) to outline the house, roof, windows and door. Step 5: I took a water brush and brushed lightly over the lines I drew. This gave a darker definition and helps pop those doors and windows!! :) Step 6: I added doodles, dots and little design elements to unify colors and shapes. I also added some words and hearts. Don't forget to draw a door knob! Below are some pics of various houses I have made. Hope this has helped fuel your creative juices. Have fun making these, but be warned they are very addictive! :)

My First Artistic Love: Discovering Egon Schiele
Fifth grade artists studied famous American Sculptor Alexander Calder (1898-1976). We found he worked in mixed media but his favorite media was metal and wire. During his lifetime, Calder created many circus figures in action and animals because he loved the circus growing up and showed this though his playful wire sculptures. His mobiles and stabiles are now seen worldwide! All fifth grade artists created their own wire fish sculpture based on Calder’s piece titled “Finny Fish”. They looked great hanging in the hallway! I wish I would have snapped a picture!
Our family loves the arts, and we also love creating our own works of art. A few months back I read about a very cool art project for kids on the blog Mary Making and it inspired me to do a similar project with my children. The project was to create a plastic sculpture that resembles one of Dale Chihuly’s fantastic glass sculptures. I wanted this to be an all-encompassing project, where we learned about the artist before embarking on the actual art project. I think that the idea of exposing children to famous works of art in order to inspire creativity within them is a brilliant idea. And we are lucky to have some fabulous museums in our area, so I decided to take advantage of our local art museum and do our own family project, a Dale Chihuly-inspired sculpture. You only need a few supplies, and this can last for hours. We even stretched out our project over several days. So here is a project I'm doing with the Grade Ones....Mixed Media Skylines. The buildings have different widths so we have some 3D interest going on. MATERIALS REQUIRED: - canvas or cardboard substrate (base) - cardboard, chipboard, heavy corrugated cardboard, Styrofoam, or packing material - Dry Dek or drywall compound (a huge bucket will only cost $20.00) - wax paper - household items for texturing, (combs, toothpicks, Lego, straws, etc.) - acrylic craft paint - paintbrushes - assorted screws, washers, whatever excess hardware on hand - colored paper, book pages, newspaper - scissors - Aleene's tacky glue - moon clip art from "The Graphics Fairy" - star sequins - Mod Podge, acrylic medium, or sealer PROCEDURE: Cut some rectangles out of cardboard and chipboard. If you don't have any packing material (I just happen to have some 2 inch wide corrugated cardboard) you can use Styrofoam, even boxes. You can also glue several pieces together to make a thick piece. For the Grade Ones I'll have this already cut into rectangles, triangles and semi circles. Lay it out on top of your canvas or background so you know you have enough buildings. Apply the drywall compound onto the cardboard. Use a spatula from the hardware store (only 88 cents) or even an old gift card. Apply to just the front for the thin pieces and include the sides for the thicker pieces. You can use some household items for texturing if you want. You can stick in some washers now if you want or glue them on later after you have painted. I did it both ways. Let dry about 6-8 hrs. Paint your background with black acrylic paint and let dry. Splatter on some white paint for stars. With the kids I use a splatter box. Paint the buildings with acrylic paint. Let dry. Glue on some windows with colored paper, book pages, or newspaper. Glue the buildings onto the background. Add the moon and a few sequin stars. Finally add a coat of Mod Podge, acrylic medium, or your usual sealer for a nice shiny finish. That's it. What a wonderful project! See you next time.
