Hi! It’s Melissa here with a fun Mixed Media Tutorial to share with you today. I've made an ATC holder and I hope you enjoy seeing the extensive process I used to create it! Here's what you'll need. Full supplies listed at the end of the tutorial. Let’s get started! Instructions for matboard – the base of the holder Cut the matboard to measure 3 ¼” x 11 ¾”. Score at 2 ¼”, 3 ½”, 7 ½” & 8 ¾”. Carefully fold along score lines, round corners with a 1/2" corner rounder. Paint/color edges of both side to cover up the white, set aside and allow to dry. Mixed Media Paper/Custom Patterned Paper – to cover the outside of the holder Custom design/stencil your own patterned paper. Trim 2 pieces of the patterned paper to measure/fit the outside of the ATC holder, they will overlap on the bottom side. Cut piece #1 to measure 3 ¼” x 9". If you wish, you can score at 2 ¼”, 3 ½” and 7 ½”. Or simply wait until you attach it to the matboard base and gently fold it at that time. Cut piece #2 measuring 3 ¼” x 4 ¼”. If you wish, you can score at 3” or wait as above. Round 2 corners on one end of each piece of the patterned paper with a ½” corner rounder. Adhere your custom patterned paper to the outside of the matboard, overlapping the 1 ¼" flaps neatly on the bottom (not the back). Start adhering at one end and fold the paper carefully as you adhere it, continue adhering from one end to the other, gently folding the holder slightly, in order to accomplish a smooth finish. Colored Printer/Copy paper – to line the inside Cut two pieces: #1 measuring 3 ¼” x 9”, if you wish you can score at 2 ¼”, 3 ½” and 7 ½”. #2 measuring 3 ¼” x 4 ¼”, if you wish you can score at 3”. Round what will be the 2 outside ends/corners on each piece with ½” corner rounder. Adhere the colored printer paper to the inside of the matboard, overlapping the 1 ¼" flaps neatly on the inside bottom of the holder. At this point, I decided to add some heat embossing and more stenciling to the patterned paper. Next, using a 1/8" hole punch, add a hole for the button closure. Fold the string in half, thread the two ends through one button (4 holed). Next, thread both ends of the cord through the back of the ATC holder though the hole to the front. Thread the cord through the 2nd button, into diagonal holes, from the bottom and then back down into the opposite 2 diagonal holes. Tighten the string until both buttons are snug against the back and front of the holder. Tie the cord around the top/front button twice. Thread the bead onto the end of the cord and tie a large knot, trimming the ends of the cord. Colored cardstock – 14 sheets to make the pockets Trim each color to measure 3 ½” x 9”. Score each at 3” and 6”. Proceed to cut and score the other 13 colors of cardstock. Add a small line of glue to the entire edge of 1 end (on of the side measuring 3 1/2'”). Add another strip of glue just inside the closest score line. Fold the first third over the middle third and then fold both of these onto the glued side, pushing firmly to make the pocket adhere together. Do not add glue to the bottom edge. Continue by cutting, scoring and gluing the other 13 colors of cardstock, making them into pockets. Punch a half-circle out of the top center of a pocket, When punching the half circle, use your first pocket as a guide. Glue the 14 pockets together by running a strip of glue, down the center of each pocket, from the top of the pocket to the bottom. When assembling the pockets, I made sure to keep the folded edges lined up together on one side and the glued edges together on the other. Adhere the pockets to the front and back of the holder by adding glue to the inside back and front (not the bottom) of the holder. Make sure to add glue only where the pockets will be touching. You should have about 1/2" clearance between the punched out half-circle of the top of the pockets and the fold on the back of the holder. Here is the side with the glue. Add your ATCs to your beautiful new ATC holder! (See that this side shows the folded edge of the pockets?) Wind the cord around the holder and then wrap the last few inches around the button. * I made 2 ATC holders. My trial run, one the right, was made with the Shower of Flutters stencil. My 2nd ATC holder is different from the trial in a few ways. I altered my 2nd holder to improve the design. I shortened my 2nd holder - the ATCs fell down into the pockets and were not easily accessible when stored in my trial holder. I rounded the corners of the second holder for a more finished look. I lined the 2nd ATC holder with paper, in contrast to having stamped the inside of the trial holder with a background stamp. I also added the bead for a pretty finishing touch. Artist Trading Cards are generally created on WC Paper. I used artist quality acrylics on archival watercolor paper. Gelli Printed papers and found ephemra are used as well. It's difficult to photograph a piece this small in a variety of settings so the little video shows it best. My students have been working hard on their Artist Trading Cards for our Swap. I plan the swap early in the year to get them excited about ATC's for their 4th-grade education but after teaching them about quality, cutting their cards and what a card is... there is usually only two or three classes where students create before sending the cards out for the trade. This means there is less choice in ATC's and more exposure to a new medium or process. This year we are doing low relief rubbings. I have seen this project on so many blogs around the world. Some of them include; Art Club Blog, Fine Line, The IB Art School, Sebenta, Art Projects for Kids, Cassie Stephens, and so many other posts, many of which I found on this Pinterest board by Chris Sholl. This is not a new project in the art world... but it sure is to my students in class. They loved creating these amazing little works of art! I supplied each table with a bunch of fun textures to design their card with. We also went outside to gather a leaf... we don't have long and all the leaves will be gone. I instructed the students to create their composition as shown in the video below. My past several lunch breaks have looked like this... me shoving some food in my face, running outside and placing all the cards in these boxes. I quickly spray them and get them in my room by the end of lunch. Whew... mission accomplished... in walks my next class. I place the cards in the class drawer with names up so kids can easily find their cards when they come in the next class. We are working on another type of card on day two, so the rubbing portion of the ATC is done as a station. The station is set up with rubbing mats. I did have to instruct the students how to peel apart the steel wool and remind them they can press too hard. It takes a lot of passes... but pressure is not what you need. I did a "check" before they would be excepted. The cards must be the right size and they must be quality (with abilities of the artist in mind). Students completed the card information and I placed the info. sheet on the back of the cardboard with hot glue. They turned out great and the kids thought this was magic!! I also tried a colored version. I used sharpie marker on the card and did the same rubbing. The effect wasn't as strong as I found the black and white to be. It is a good alternative for students who didn't get a chance to place the tin foil on during the first class.
click all pictures to see them better Our family has been playing a game called SPLIT for at least eight years and we recently ran out of score sheets and the cards were Cheeto-stained, bent and in pretty bad shape (like me some days). So we grudgingly opened a new box (I had bought a couple when the company folded) but no one could bear the thought of throwing away the old cards. This project is born from happy memories meets uncharachteristic sentiment (we're usually pretty cold-hearted about stuff). I prepared the cards with a thick layer of gesso applied with a palette knife. You waste a lot less this way than if you use a brush and spreading is quick and as easy as buttering bread. This is a great time for mark-making so etch into some of the gesso. I mostly made hearts as they're easy. You can make marks with the back of a paintbrush, a skewer, pencil, stick - whatever. Drying time. *sigh* The bane of my existence and I've gotten weird about preferring natural air drying over using my heat gun. Why? It seems more stable to me. And I'm a nut. Anyhow... Since I wanted to maximize what was accomplished during my (eternal) dry time I spritzed them with spray ink. This is a very unintentional step. Don't stress it. Some will look good, some will pool and muddle and look bad. It's all fine. Once it dries gesso and ink combine and the results are rarely recognizable from what you see at this stage. Then, just for shits and giggles I splash around some alcohol ink. Love this stuff. Never used it as intended. I just splash, splash, splash the stuff all over my projects and then grin at it like the Cheshire Cat. It's good stuff. Covers everything. Spreads like a zombie virus. Win all around. Here's one batch of cards. I did one craft mat (official distance measure in my house) worth of cards at a time. Waited an hour or three until they were safe to move off onto the table (Still very sticky, but moveable) and then made another set. It took all day but all 104 are now prepared. I sorted them according to the ones that were awesome and the ones that sucked. I'd dress it up but that would be dishonest. Me: Suck. Suck. Really, Nicole? Suck!!! Awesome. Then in my traditional backwards way of doing things, I started with the ones I hated so if I wrecked them, they were already destined for the trash and it would fall under the 'no harm no foul' rule. They were ugly. As you can see in the pic above (left side), my gold alcohol ink (just found it in a box) made brown splotches. Not even brown really, more like puce. Ick. So I added some ink, spread some large mica flakes and did my best to salvage them. Now I luuurve them. So pretty and fun. No Cheeto stains. Here's the first dozen or so: Thanks so much for visiting! This is a fantastic mixed media, open-ended project that has students create their own ARTIST TRADING CARDS. It works really well in middle school and high school. I usually do this the first week or art class to really get them excited and making and trying new things. They are asked to create 3 small cards that represent them. You can have them either gesso over old baseball cards (cheap!) or cut templates from bristol board as the base. You can also tweak it so they work within a theme that you pick or they pick. This project includes: -A planning sheet to help them brainstorm ideas and themes -A planning sheet where they do thumbnails and start off the creative process -The project handout that walks them through the steps Also -this has been a cool project that I've done in collaboration with a teacher with another school - we actually inter-office mailed each other one card each per student (this way they got to keep 2/3 of their originals), and "traded" with another class. It was SO EXCITING. They also look awesome in a hanging display - just clip them together, one on top of another. Kids really love the freedom of this, and working so small. It's a real challenge! 2016 Topic 12: Fabric Rae Missigman Hi everyone, Darcy here, time flies and we are at the start of another challenge. This time it is fabric, I know that may immediately seem scary, but let's have a look at some inspiration and hopefully you will all feel able to take the plunge and bring fabric into your mixed media creations. Textiles have been as part of our lives since earliest civilisation, from handmade clothing and other practical items through to more decorative trims and house decor. Decoration of fabric began with embroidered clothing, and was a sign of wealth. Many samplers were stitched by wives and daughters, these became wonderful pieces of textile art. Antique Dress One of the earliest and simplest forms of textile construction would be felting, taking simple animal fibres and creating cloth from those. Then twisting, spinning and weaving followed. Functionality of textiles has continued, but methods and materials have changed and expanded dramatically and the Industrial Revolution changed textile technology significantly. As for artistic applications, the silk routes and introduction of dyes from abroad really transformed decoration. Nowadays with paint, dyes, unlimited synthetic fibres and all sorts of machinery we can create just about anything...and we do! Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 11: Our House Challenge... What a wonderful array of houses,fit for a Queen of crafting to live in. The vibrant colours and quirky shapes are such fun, it looks like you had a great time creating them. Even without a house stamp or stencil I think these are one of the easiest images to create. I hope this challenge has inspired you to add more houses in your work. . [email protected] Let's start with felting, a flat piece of felted fabric is one of the simplest techniques to try, however there are some stunning felted pieces out there. Needle felting especially can be intricate and very detailed. Soroka As we move through history we come across dyes that were introduced by travellers, these were brighter than the moss and vegetable dyes that we had traditionally used. Modern dyes and colourants are so varied, but the simplest and cheapest way to colour is with wax crayons. Here is a quick and easy video for you from Terrie Kygar. This technique could easily be applied to stamped images on fabric. Did you know that you can use your Fresco Chalk paints on fabric? add a little fabric medium, any brand, and the item becomes washable. I made this apron a few years ago and it has been washed several times. Weaving always had practical applications, whether for blankets, rugs or clothing. However there is no reason that practical can't be pretty too like these sweet woven bracelets by Kate Whitehead. If quilting is your thing, how about this bright and funky lollipop flower quilt. Your favourite flower stamps could be used here as the base shapes. Deborah O'Hare You don't fancy sewing? no problem, take inspiration from Elfi Cella, a Swiss painter. Here a shirt has been attached to a canvas and then texture paste added and painted. This would also be a good project for those still playing with Powertex. Moving onto smaller pieces, how about some cards made from tiny leftovers. These are stitched but you could easily layer up your scraps and glue them in place. Kelly King No stitching with this one at all, use freehand cut out shapes or stamped faces and create clothing with scraps. I have seen this done with pretty handkerchiefs as the skirt. LazyDoll Staying with smaller projects, let's go 3d. This decorated koi from Brooke Connor is so much fun. How about adding wire to your fabric and creating freestanding decorations. Many of your flowers and leaf stamps could be used to create wired flowers. Jennifer Swift These moths are my favourite find for this topic, I adore them. There are so many possibilities, ideas inspired by these little creatures. How would you go about creating something like this, think about what is in your stash right now, what could you use? Mister Finch All these so far would seem a little time consuming, so here is an idea for a really quick bookmark. Nothing could be simpler, but of course you could add your own twist to it. You could paint the card and stamp onto the fabric. Alysse Here is another no-sew idea, tags with die cuts holes and a piece of fabric glued behind. Darcy If you like layers then you could add fabric to a tag, make a pocket and fill it with all sorts of interesting bits. Anita Houston Now for some wall art, there are so many possibilities, fabric is so versatile and malleable . A simple layer glued on gives immediate texture, while subsequent layers and forms add dimension. Ginny Gibson What good are layers if you can't see through to the one below? Here you will find a tutorial by Susan Lenz, showing how she creates her box fibre art, and how she uses a soldering iron to reveal the layers of fabrics. If you are a fan of recycling then how about using up clothing labels and shopping bag handles. This is an intriguing quilt, it shows a glimpse into the maker's shopping habits, and could easily become a memory quilt. Perhaps you have shopping labels from a holiday? this would be a great way to collate them. I think I may have left the most interesting projects till last.. fabric journals. These can be no-sew, or they can be heavily embroidered, whichever you prefer. As mixed media artists these probably fulfil our need to use different mediums more so than other fabric projects. These books can be painted, dyed, stamped, stitched and embellished, really, anything goes! DJ Pettitt These are by Frances Pickering, they utilise pelmet vilene. This is an excellent base for a book cover as it is very sturdy, will take paint but can also still be stitched. I really like the shape of these books. I will leave you with this video from Leandra showing just how she paints with Frescos onto fabric . Hopefully you are now inspired to use some fabric, remember it does not need to be stitched, it could be glued as a layer under a stamped image or it could be a bought fabric item that you decorate. I am sure you have bags or an apron that could be transformed with paint. Have fun! When I want to relax, I make ATCs.....Artist Trading Cards. ATCs are 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" in size or the size of an average playing card. They're super fun to make and a terrific way to share and trade your art with other artists from around the world. This month I'm hosting a SWAP and I hope you join us! Big fan of this vintage strong man image Watch how to make them here STUFF I USED Playing cards Lace Americana Acrylic in any yellow DecoArt Decoupage DecoArt Dazzling Metallics in Bright Brass DecoArt Media in Cobalt, Red and Interference in Gold DecoArt Craft Twinkles in Gold Therm•o•web Deco Foil (for gold leaf accents) Stick on rhinestones Optional: Sewing machine 1. 2. & 3. Paint the card in yellow, then gold 3. & 4. Cut lace squares the size of each card and decoupage over the gold 5. Paint over your images with a nice red 6. Cut out hearts, rip book pages and cut more images for your cards *Try the GraphicsFairy.com for some amazing images to print out and use 7. & 8. Decoupage the ripped pages, hearts and images over the lace 9. For more texture I stitched around the cards with my sewing machine *You could hand stitch with some bold thread if you wanted 10. Add a word or phrase 11. Paint with Interference in Gold to add a beautiful metallic shimmer to the surface 12. Edge with a bright color 13. Add gold leaf accents with Therm•o•web Deco Foil 14. Glitterize with Craft Twinkles 15. Add even more sparkle with stick on rhinestones Download and print these out for the back of your cards
