A rare Minton image especially commissioned for publication in a 1948 copy of The Strand Magazine and printed by Hazell, Watson and Viney. This is a half page illustration from the journal illustrating Inez Holden's short story 'Saturday Afternoon at the Dogs'. This has now been mounted including caption in lower border in a 6x6 ins. backed ivory mount, all materials used being acid-free. Window is just under 4x4ins.. Text to reverse-no show through. The images for this story by Minton are given their own page in Professor Martin Salisbury's authoritative book on John Minton, THE SNAIL THAT CLIMBED THE EIFFEL TOWER AND OTHER WORK BY JOHN MINTON, published by Mainstone Press in 2017. John Minton was an English painter, illustrator, stage designer and teacher. After studying in France, he became a teacher in London and at the same time painted a large number of works. He painted landscapes, portraits and other subjects, some on a very large scale and he also became an illustrator of books.
