Good morning, Crafters! I have a sweet, summertime tutorial for you today! If you are trapped inside with the air conditioning roaring, then it's the perfect time to whip up this little cutie! My monthly mini showcases the Authentique Summertime Collection! This is the perfect collection for these hot, humid, end-of-summer days! This summer collection comes with six different sheets and 12 patterns, However, the collection has TWO sheets of cut-aparts, Summertime Five and Summertime Six. If you purchase the paper pad, you get four of each pattern. That is plenty of paper to make this mini album! This mini is 5" tall and 3 1/2" wide (similar to the Meadow Mini Album, shared HERE). There are three pages, with lots of fold-outs and flaps, plus TWO waterfall sections! Let's get started on the tutorial. Cut two pieces of medium weight chipboard to 5" x 3 1/2". Cut one piece of chipboard to 5" x 1". Trim dark blue cardstock to 7" x 10 1/4" and attach the chipboard pieces to the cardstock as shown above. Make sure to maintain a 1/8" gap between the spine piece and the cover pieces of chipboard. Trim the cardstock corners at an angle and attach double-sided adhesive to the tabs. Wrap the chipboard as shown. Gently fold the covers while scoring in the 1/8" gutter (or channel) between the spine and the covers. Trim decorative paper to fit over the center spine section. Do this BEFORE adding your hinge mechanism. DO NOT add paper to your inside covers until AFTER you add your hinge mechanism. Create a hinge mechanism from dark blue cardstock. Cut the cardstock to 4 1/4" x 4 1/2". (The 4 1/4" measurement is the height of the hinge.) Score on the longer side at: 1", 1 1/8", 1 3/8", 1 5/8", 2", 2 1/4", 2 1/2", 2 7/8", 3 1/8", 3 3/8", 3 1/2". This will make three hinges that are 1/4" all with a 3/8" space between hinges. Attach the hinge to the spine of the book. Line up the scored 1/8" "gutters" on your hinge to the gutters on your album. Gently burnish and fold all your score lines. Trim decorative paper to add to the inside of your covers. Trim three pieces of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and add one piece to each hinge. Glue these "base pages" to the left side of each hinge. (Don't worry. Your decorative papers will cover the other side of the hinge.) Create a waterfall section for the front cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous page. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the first base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap, then the right flap to finish the first base page. Turn the page and work on the BACK of the first base page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 5/8" x 3 1/8" and score on the bottom at 1/4" from the edge. Round the top corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the bottom edge of the BACK of the first base page. Add a pocket to the bottom of the second base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flip the second base page over and work on the BACK. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 5 1/2" and score on the long side at 2" and 5 1/4" from the left edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the second base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the second base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the right flap, then the accordion fold the left flap to finish the second base page Add a pocket to the bottom of the THIRD base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flop the page and work on the BACK of the last page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the third base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the flap to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap to finish the last base page. Create a waterfall section for the inside back cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Now your mini book is ready to decorate! I trimmed a piece of white, adhesive-back canvas to cover the spine of my book. Then, I added the yellow and white dotted paper to the front and back covers. I kept the cover simple by adding a word grid sticker and a bit of pretty ribbon. (The sticker is VERY OLD and I have no idea where it's from!) I double-matted the sticker and added it to a bit of scrap chipboard before gluing it to the cover. I found the cute crab button in my stash and thought he would like to end his days decorating the bow! I used a banner die to cut out the spine decor. I used a Tim Holtz brad to dangle some charms from the spine. (I have a bin of charms and a bin of beads, most of which have been with me since the early 1990's! I add to them from time to time, so I really don't remember where these particular items came from!) I added the fun Summertime papers to the inside sections of my book, and then just added a few stickers and other bits and bobs to decorate each page. The Summertime cut-aparts are the perfect size for my pages... and to fit into the pockets! I have no idea how long I've had some of these stickers! I almost never reach for stickers, but I am happy I still had these in my stash as they worked perfectly for this little book! I found clear stickers, and 3-D sticker, and word art...just a treasure trove! With TWO waterfall features, there is a lot of space for photos and journaling! If you want to see each page, watch my little walk-through video below! I hope you are inspired to beat the heat and make a little end-of-summer mini! Thanks for joining me today! Create stunning and eye-catching scrapbooks with the easiest mini album tutorial there is to follow! Using simple materials and techniques.
Hello and happy Saturday to everyone! It's my favorite day of the week, and this one is even more exciting because I have the pleasure of bringing you the step by step here at the Frilly and Funkie Blog. I should probably begin by telling you about my love of antiques. I volunteer as a docent at an 1808 Charleston mansion. One of my favorite displays is the hand written music book that belonged to one of the daughters. It holds a dear place in my heart, with its stains and mildew spots, a treasure that has withstood most of the ravages of the past 200 years. Today we will journey back in time, taking something new and creating a photo album that looks like it has been around for a couple of centuries. We begin with a book. I purchase my crafting books from a used book store at the bargain price of three for a dollar. Step 1: demolition. Rip off the covers. Yes, just rip them off! Keep the covers for later use. You can create some amazing things with the covers. Once your covers are removed they will look something like the above photo. Now it is time to start disassembling your books. Remove the blank pages at the front and back, carefully separating them. Next rip out a section of your book that will become your album. I made mine about 15 pages for the purpose of this tutorial, but you can make them any size you like. When you pull them off, be sure the glue from the back is intact to your section. You don't want your album pages falling apart on you. Let the aging begin! I do this by buying the cheapest store brand instant coffee available and mixing it with some hot tap water. Submerge your paper and book sections fully. I don't leave them in for long. Just enough time to be sure everything is saturated. Sometimes you need to separate a few of the pages to wet them down fully. I give the book sections a squeeze at the end to make them more wrinkled and remove the excess coffee. After they are stained I bake them in the oven at 225 degrees on a foil covered baking sheet until they are dry, turning once during the process. The blank pages dry quickly. The thick sections take a bit longer. I open those up in the center and spread them out to facilitate drying. Keep checking on them and don't walk away from your kitchen while baking paper. The photos below are the end product of the staining technique. They have blemishes and imperfections, which is exactly what you want. I add even more character to my blank pages by running the Tim Holtz distress tool along the edges. Begin separating your book into sections of fairly equal size. My sections are 5 pages each, giving my album a front, back, and two center sections. I glue each section of 5 pages together, then cover the front, back, and middle sections with the blank stained pages. When applying your blank stained pages, leave about an inch of the long side of the page un-adhered. Use this space to glue in strips of lace as embellishment. Gather up some pretty laces and distress stains. Linda has a marvelous selection at the Funkie Junkie Boutique. I find that lace accepts the distress stain better than the coffee I use on the paper. Wet your lace down with plain water and liberally apply distress stain. I use antique linen and old paper. Once your lace drys you will adhere it into the edges of your album. It will look something like the photo below. Next I did a bit of stamping with Tim Holtz distress ink and some favorite stamps. Now it's time to gather some pretty papers. I chose Maja's Vintage Summer Basics. I did some artistic tearing for my front and back covers, and cut the middle sections to just below the size of my album pages. I did the same coffee staining process with my Maja papers, finishing the edges with the distress tool. I found the perfect way to display my photos! Tim Holtz cabinet cards! I love them! Below are a few photos of my completed pages. I kept my album simple, but you can be as elaborate as you like. I distress stained and adhered some rosette lace to the spine of my album. I decided I wanted a few more embellishments on my cover. I made a small tag using a stamped image and Maja papers, added a vintage cluster earring, tied it all together with some additional stained lace, and tucked in these sweet vintage images to finish it all off. Thank you so much for visiting the Frilly and Funkie Blog today. With my fingers now happily covered in ink and stain, I send my wishes to you for a wonderful and crafty weekend! Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. So pleased you came for a visit. I am here to show you what I have created with Kerry-Jean Watson's awesome Sherlock Book Kit. This fabulous Kit is available from Meg's Garden as either a fully printed version or a digital download that you can print for yourself. HERE is the link to see the video of the Book Kit. I am basically a card maker and I was in need of a Crafting Diary to keep track of Birthdays and Anniversaries, etc. and also Design Team Deadlines, and so that is what I decided to make with my Kit. Yes, I do have all that information on my computer, but there is nothing like having it all on hand in a pretty book is there?? For the front cover I did some stamping and stenciling and splashed a little paint around as well before adding the embellies. Most of the embellishments you can see came from Meg's Garden. You can purchase some fantastic 'bundles' that contain beads, ribbons, metal embellies ... everything you could possibly need to beautifully embellish your Kit, and they come in an assortment of colours too!! The film strip frame came from my stash and the photos inside it are actually photos of some of my past projects for Meg's Garden. The quote was found on the net. I wanted to incorporate some craft quotes into this book so you will see the odd one or two scattered around on different pages. The tabs you can see peeking out from the side of the book are part of the Kit. I simply wrote the months on by hand and then glued them to the edge of the journal pages. The book measures 5.75" x 7.75" and all the pages were distressed and inked with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink and then glued to sheets of Kraft Cardstock. Punched some holes with my Crop-adile and bound it together with seam binding. The binding was also coloured with Distress Ink in Gathered Twigs and Walnut Stain. Here's a closie of the charms ... ... and another of the quote and the flower cluster. I wanted this book to be more than just a Diary. I also want to use it as an ideas journal so I made a couple of small booklets and some tags in order to record things like interesting sketches, color palettes and great techniques. Making the booklet was very simple. I just cut some kraft cardstock and some plain sheets of paper to the size I wanted, folded them in half and then simply punched two holes in the crease and pulled some twine through and tied it with a bow. I then covered the front of each booklet with some of the paper and used a fancy paper clip to keep them closed. Following are some shots of the embellished pages or you can just go straight down to the end of this post for a walk through video which was made by Kerry-Jean Watson the creator of this awesome Kit. I don't make videos as I don't have the equipment and I am so pleased that Kerry-Jean offered to do one for me. Thank you KJ ... you rock!! ... and this is the back of the book. The gorgeous stains you can see are actually on the paper itself. The only changes I made here was to distress and ink the edges ... Looooovee those stains!! Here is the walk-through video!! I do hope you like my little Diary and that I have inspired you to get one for yourself!! Why not pop over to the Meg's Garden Blog and see what my Teamies created with this awesome Kit. You will be amazed by the variety!! HERE is the link to the blog and HERE is the link to the Shop! How to make a one sheet wonder mini album! Make a complete mini album with cover from only one 12x12 sheet of cardstock
"Remember it is your time" Mini Album from Stephanie Miller!!!! Hi everyone, here's a share of my Bluemoon Design Team project that was crazy fun to make & easy (I know what your thinking.. 'it doesn't look easy!' but it is.. I promise!!) I made this album using the most gorgeous papers & embellishments ever.... the 'Timepiece' Collection by Bo Bunny! I have to tell you ... creating a mini is easy when you surround your self with gorgeous scrappy product. TRY IT.. YOU'LL LOVE IT!! One of my favorite things about this mini is the SHAPE of the pages. The album was made with the Tim Holtz Alterations "On the Edge Dies"! Whoa!! I love-love the beautiful lines of these dies (see product detail below for details). Some of the supplies I used: BB TIMEPIECE Petal buttons Defining Moment And the PAPERS.. ooh my goodness! Love-Love the BB Vintage Time Piece Collection: Paper Dot Paper Home Paper Timepiece Paper Unlocked Paper Tick Tock Paper Moments Miscellaneous scrappy happiness used: TA Choc Covered Cherries GM Prima Trinket Flower Vintage Antique Keys - Copper TH Timpieces Alterations Dies "On the Edge" (album is made from) must have tools: Micro Serrated Scissor New favorite: darkroom door Rubber Stamp Set - Doors
I love interactive projects especially mini albums. It's so much fun to go through an album and find surprises in it. Pull a tag, open a door or turn a wheel and find secrets under it. It takes the mini album to a whole different level. What if I told you you can achieve all that but with only ONE sheet of paper? You can! here's how... First let me say that I'm so happy I can share a Youtube video tutorial with you because it's really difficult to explain all the steps with actually seeing how they work. Start with a 12x12 cardstock. I used a black one and covered it later but you can use a patterned double sided cardstock and then you can skip the covering part. Score it on the 4" and 8" marks, turn it a quarter of a turn and score again. Continue according to the items: First cut along all the lines (that are not dotted) and then fold: A: fold top center to the right. apply adhesive to top and bottom edges of right square and attach to create a pocket. B: fold down. C: fold top left square down. Apply adhesive to right and bottom edges of center left square and attach to create a pocket. fold under center square. D: fold to the right. E: fold bottom right square to the left. F: fold edge of square to the right on 1" mark. apply adhesive to flaps to create two pockets. G: fold bottom left square to the right. Fold up to close. Add tags and inserts to the pockets and embellish. Create strips of paper to hold some of the tags. The steps are a little confusing to explain in words and it'll be so much easier to watch the video. I hope you'll join in the fun and try this project. It might look complicated but it's really easy. Just follow all the steps and you're there! Follow me on Facebook and YouTube for more crafty treats! Have fun creating! Einat

Sick of minis yet? I hope not! Cuz I've got more to share!!! :) :) This concentric heart-shaped album is all about our day in Monaco! First, a video flip through: I die cut the "set of nested hearts" from six Oh My Heart patterned papers and added a few more pages here and there because I always find more pictures and elements I want to add. I layered them all together and stitched several times down the center to make the mini album base. The front cover was a super busy paper so I covered most of it with a piece of white cardstock and then went to town embellishing with florals, the Thickers title, and even a small photo of Monaco. I had a leftover charm that I made as a tester for my Santorini album that I used here. In the first spread I used one of the Oh My Heart florals that I printed and die cut with my Cameo and attached a small photo with a puffy heart sticker. I fussy cut the scallops from Paper 17 and stitched them to the page. The stitching lines made great dividers for typed, printed, and trimmed journaling strips. I love the font Remington Noiseless so of course I used it here. The right side is a full-page photo and at the top I added a wood veneer heart geo-tag. The next spread is an explosion of pink! I made a collage of two pink building photos for a full-page photo spread and on the right pink patterned paper I found all the pink things from Oh My Heart and added hand stitching details to a flower fussy cut from Paper 06. And then I started getting crazy with layered embellishments! I stacked three photos about Princess Grace Kelly and the church she was married and buried in together and stitched them at the top. The "lovely" chipboard piece on the top photo makes an easy photo turner. I journaled around the edge of the right page and added all kinds of embellishments to the center. Closer look at the stacked photos. Jane was tiny in the left full-page photo so I drew attention to her by stitching a heart around her mischievous little self and added a heart die cut and a trio of tiny hearts punched from vellum. I toned down the right side die cut from Paper 15 with white paint and then trimmed a chipboard flower sticker in half. The Mirror Leaf Stickers are from Take Me Away and there's a little bit more journaling on top. The next spread is all about nearly bumping into the Prince of Monaco!! I made that paperclip with a regular ol' clip and stitched a Take Me Away Button to the end. I was so scared to hand draw that arrow leading to the Prince himself, but after practicing a few times on scratch paper I gave it a go on the real deal and love how it turned out. Details of some of the pages. Can you notice a theme? HEARTS, HEARTS, and MORE HEARTS! Here is the center spread - our family photo. It was very sunny, so the puffy sunglasses sticker fit the them perfectly! I used a heart scalloped border punch by American Crafts and strips of vellum to create this textured page next to a full-page photo of the kids. I was so excited to see the Monte Carlo so it needed its own spread. The journaling lines and heart stamps are from the Oh My Heart Acrylic Stamps. Another thing Monaco is famous for is the Grand Prix race so that needed its own spread too! Lots of hearts and flowers, the usual ;) Oh I also toned down the busy paper with white paint and added splashes of watercolor. I made another two photo collage for the left full-page photo, added a few bits between, then on the right spread I fussy cut hearts from Paper 11, machined stitched through them with matching colored thread, then adhered them in place on their matching heart. I left the strings pretty long for fun! Here I used a Balzer Designs stencil and modeling paste to make the first layer and then piled on all the green embellishments to the left side. The right side is a filler page - I cut a half heart from scratch paper and adhered all the leftover photos to the front and back. It was a little difficult to insert into the album, hence the messy machine stitching, but it's in there for good now and I love having this plethora of photos as the last page. The other side of the photo collage on the left. On the right I cut a slightly smaller piece of Paper 21 and hand stitched through all the tiny hearts to create a really fun texture. I kept the embellishing minimal so the stitching could be the star of the show. Another view. If you haven't made many mini albums before, I hope you are inspired to give them a go! I admit I used to hate making them. Hate is a strong word I know... but they were so difficult! But the more I'm making them the more I'm loving them so I'm just gonna keep going down this mini album route until I'm inspired to go back to layouts! And that my friends is the whole kit and caboodle! See you next time! SUPPLIES: Patterned paper, die cuts, stickers, Thickers, charms, puffy stickers, buttons, pretty much everything: Paige Evans for Pink Paislee; Cardstock, pen, adhesive: American Crafts; Sewing machine: Brother; Thread: Coats & Clark; Embroidery floss: DMC; Die cut machine: Silhouette Cameo 3; Set of Nested Hearts cut file
When Lance saw this album he called it my "super album'. Yup - it's a big one! I tried to edit it down (and did take out a few photos), but decided I really liked everything that was in it. It's still manageable to flip through and will be easy...
