Years and years ago I made some printables for my Julips using a template I found somewhere online and pretty terrible resolution images of real feed bags. They weren't great but everyone seemed to like them at the time and they came in really handy for scenes. A few years later I decided to make some new ones using my own art and designs which turned out really well and I couldn't wait to share them. Then, I accidentally resized the original photoshop file, leaving them unable to be edited properly, so I held back. I originally intended to make a whole range of products in the same vein, but as so often happens with me when disaster strikes, my interest in the project absolutely evaporated as soon as I ran into issues. The names have nothing to do with their actual scale, I just thought it'd be a nice little in joke. XD The shavings bag template was covered in clear packing tape before I glued it together to make it look like a clear plastic bag. I experimented with taping clear plastic from packaging around it (like if you were wrapping a present) and that gave a much more realistic look, so I'd recommend trying that, especially as it's a great way to recycle! Anyway, I was sorting out my files today when I rediscovered them and decided they'd been in hiding for too long! They *should* be big enough for Traditionals, but that's not my preferred scale so forgive me if they end up a little small. I just used plain old printer paper which works well, and gave them a spray of gloss varnish after I'd glued them together. This didn't work quite as well as I'd have liked but I'm sure with a bit of experimenting you can come up with some more ideas! If you've never made a printable like this before, it's quite simple. Just cut them out, and fold along the lines, then use tacky glue/glue stick to assemble. I like to stuff them with scrunched up loo roll or scrap paper to give them a bit of dimension, though you could also put actual feed or dry rice/pulses in for a realistic weight and shape. Daisy Stalls on YouTube made some and has an excellent video guide on how to assemble them as well as some other really nice stable accessories. I have to say, I haven't been around an actual feed room in literal years, so forgive me any inaccuracies! These are 100% FREE to use, but are NOT to be sold. If I ever decide to sell them I’ll say so and link to them here, but until that time, any you see for sale on Etsy, Instagram etc are definitely not being sold by me and should be reported. I personally don't think they're very good but I know they were pretty popular when I made them originally. 😂 (Apparently I couldn't be bothered cleaning up the edges of the green one. 🙈) In other news, I've had several posts sitting in my drafts for months because Blogger has changed and now I can't seem to embed any photos from Flickr like I've been doing for years. I now need to use Google Photos, which is fine for some things, but one of the main reasons I like Flickr is being able to keep all my images in one place, and I hate the fact I'm now going to have to upload stuff to Google separately if I want to blog about them. 😠 Also, Blogger Does Not Like my laptop for some reason and won't let me scroll the page properly and just, urghhh, first world problems. I know I say it in virtually every post, but I hope I can post more regularly! This year has been a nightmare for many reasons, and certainly wasn't what I was hoping for, regarding consistant blog posting! 😓

Following on from the Wheat Fields that I made last week I decided to make a few fields of vegetable crops for my wargames terrain collection. Again these are for 15mm wargaming and are a cheap alternative to pre-made scenery. However, I can't take full credit for this particular build project as I took a lot of inspiration from the excellent scenery on The Terrain Guy Blog. To complete this project I needed a cheap corded doormat, some PVA glue, a pack of Woodland Scenic's clump foliage and a couple of wooden coffee stirrers. I started by buying a cheap corded doormat for the princely sum of One Pound from a local corner shop. I wanted to get a dark brown mat but they only had dark green in stock but I decided to press ahead with my idea anyway. At worst I would be down £1 and a few hours of labour. As it is I'm pretty happy with the results and think the Dark green works, as well as a brown mat, would have. I started by making a 'proof of concept' test piece. This was a small off-cut and would otherwise have been thrown away. I tried several ways of applying the clump foliage to the grooves of the mat using the PVA glue and eventually settled on the method illustrated below. I cut the mat into 8 rectangular fields of various sizes using a sturdy pair of scissors. Then I trimmed the edges to make the fields neat and regular. Again I found it best to use a sharp pair of strong scissors to make light work of the rather tough fibres. The next step was to break down some clump foliage (the type used by model rail enthusiasts and Wargamers alike) into very fine pieces. I tried doing this by hand but realised this would take a long time. So I found an old coffee bean grinding machine (electrical) and used that to reduce my clumps to the consistency needed... don't tell the wife! Glueing the reduced clump material to the mat required a liberal application of PVA Glue. This was laid down one line at a time and the 'foliage' sprinkled onto the line and pressed into place with wooden sticks. Eventually, I worked out a technique that makes this process much faster. I used one stick 'behind' the row of glue and used a second stick to push the foliage into place. Using the sticks like flat paddles I was able to get rather neat looking lines of 'vegetables' with a visible gap between the rows. Don't be afraid to use lots of PVA as much of it soaks into the mat and you need plenty to keep the foliage in place. I found it best to complete one field then press the surface with a book (suitably protected of course) then set aside to dry overnight. I think the resulting fields will be fairly durable as well as looking good. Another version I tried and liked was a field of smaller vegetable or perhaps a young crop. For this, I applied a smaller amount of glue into the grooves of the mat then sprinkled static grass across the surface before tapping off the excess. I will definitely make some more fields like this although I will try to get some different coloured foliage to use to represent different root crops. Scattered between the Wheat Fields I did last week they should give a nice 'patchwork quilt' effect for my Normandy countryside. UPDATE: Since writing this article I have undertaken several other 15mm terrain projects that you may find useful or interesting. Making Normandy Bocage and the follow-up article More Normandy Bocage illustrate my method for making these distinctive French hedgerows. I have also made some Farmyard Gates built specifically to fit into the Bocage I now have. I also made a load more Farmland & Fields using a different method to that shown in this article. This Marshy Stream was made for 6mm wargaming but to be honest, could be used in larger scales. On a grimmer note, I also made some Dead Cow terrain for my Normandy games. Guess what? I made another pillow! Aren't you shocked? I started with an oh clementine charm pack from the lovely Alison of Cluck Cluck Sew. Then, I added a healthy dose of scraps from overflowing bins to round things out. (I'm nothing if not predictable, right?) I love the color and fabric combination that I ended up using. I plan to use this as a teaching tool at my upcoming "Make Good Choices" workshop at Modern Textiles on Saturday. See, I HAD to make it! The pillow cover measures about 20" square or so. AND...it's scrap project #89/101. Last night as I was trying to fall asleep I started thinking of 10 reasons why I love to make pillows: 1. They are small, so they are a nearly instant gratification project....easy to finish in a day or even in a long afternoon of sewing. 2. They are a good way to play with a fabric line (or fabrics scraps) that you may have, but in a limited amount. 3. They are a good way to play with a technique that is new to you. (I tried a slightly different technique for making half square triangles and I liked it a lot!) 4. They use up scraps of batting. (Who doesn't have plenty of those laying around?) 5. They make good gifts (if you are able to part with them). 6. They are a quick way to freshen up/change up a room. 7. They are good for napping, obviously! (Oh, a nap....now that's a great idea.) 8. The pillow cover itself is much more compact to store than a quilt. (We know that in some households that could be a problem.) 9. The more you make, the better they look as a collection. (Who needs to sit on the couch anyway?) and my favorite reason of all.... 10. It's fun to watch my husband to launch them off the bed every night. (For some reason he doesn't see the need for 13 pillows on the bed?) Disclaimers: This is not my entire throw pillow collection, although it is a large part of it. They are normally scattered around the house, I just rounded these up for the photo. My husband doesn't launch pillows off the bed EVERY night, but there is a lot of muttering about why one would need to have so many pillows on the bed. (We literally have 10 bed size pillows on our bed at this time.) I MAY have a pillow problem and apparently it's not exclusive to throw pillows. I don't plan on seeking help for this problem any time soon. My husband has come to accept it. For that I am very thankful.
