Good morning, Crafters! I have a sweet, summertime tutorial for you today! If you are trapped inside with the air conditioning roaring, then it's the perfect time to whip up this little cutie! My monthly mini showcases the Authentique Summertime Collection! This is the perfect collection for these hot, humid, end-of-summer days! This summer collection comes with six different sheets and 12 patterns, However, the collection has TWO sheets of cut-aparts, Summertime Five and Summertime Six. If you purchase the paper pad, you get four of each pattern. That is plenty of paper to make this mini album! This mini is 5" tall and 3 1/2" wide (similar to the Meadow Mini Album, shared HERE). There are three pages, with lots of fold-outs and flaps, plus TWO waterfall sections! Let's get started on the tutorial. Cut two pieces of medium weight chipboard to 5" x 3 1/2". Cut one piece of chipboard to 5" x 1". Trim dark blue cardstock to 7" x 10 1/4" and attach the chipboard pieces to the cardstock as shown above. Make sure to maintain a 1/8" gap between the spine piece and the cover pieces of chipboard. Trim the cardstock corners at an angle and attach double-sided adhesive to the tabs. Wrap the chipboard as shown. Gently fold the covers while scoring in the 1/8" gutter (or channel) between the spine and the covers. Trim decorative paper to fit over the center spine section. Do this BEFORE adding your hinge mechanism. DO NOT add paper to your inside covers until AFTER you add your hinge mechanism. Create a hinge mechanism from dark blue cardstock. Cut the cardstock to 4 1/4" x 4 1/2". (The 4 1/4" measurement is the height of the hinge.) Score on the longer side at: 1", 1 1/8", 1 3/8", 1 5/8", 2", 2 1/4", 2 1/2", 2 7/8", 3 1/8", 3 3/8", 3 1/2". This will make three hinges that are 1/4" all with a 3/8" space between hinges. Attach the hinge to the spine of the book. Line up the scored 1/8" "gutters" on your hinge to the gutters on your album. Gently burnish and fold all your score lines. Trim decorative paper to add to the inside of your covers. Trim three pieces of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and add one piece to each hinge. Glue these "base pages" to the left side of each hinge. (Don't worry. Your decorative papers will cover the other side of the hinge.) Create a waterfall section for the front cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous page. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the first base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap, then the right flap to finish the first base page. Turn the page and work on the BACK of the first base page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 5/8" x 3 1/8" and score on the bottom at 1/4" from the edge. Round the top corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the bottom edge of the BACK of the first base page. Add a pocket to the bottom of the second base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flip the second base page over and work on the BACK. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 5 1/2" and score on the long side at 2" and 5 1/4" from the left edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the second base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the second base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the right flap, then the accordion fold the left flap to finish the second base page Add a pocket to the bottom of the THIRD base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flop the page and work on the BACK of the last page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the third base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the flap to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap to finish the last base page. Create a waterfall section for the inside back cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Now your mini book is ready to decorate! I trimmed a piece of white, adhesive-back canvas to cover the spine of my book. Then, I added the yellow and white dotted paper to the front and back covers. I kept the cover simple by adding a word grid sticker and a bit of pretty ribbon. (The sticker is VERY OLD and I have no idea where it's from!) I double-matted the sticker and added it to a bit of scrap chipboard before gluing it to the cover. I found the cute crab button in my stash and thought he would like to end his days decorating the bow! I used a banner die to cut out the spine decor. I used a Tim Holtz brad to dangle some charms from the spine. (I have a bin of charms and a bin of beads, most of which have been with me since the early 1990's! I add to them from time to time, so I really don't remember where these particular items came from!) I added the fun Summertime papers to the inside sections of my book, and then just added a few stickers and other bits and bobs to decorate each page. The Summertime cut-aparts are the perfect size for my pages... and to fit into the pockets! I have no idea how long I've had some of these stickers! I almost never reach for stickers, but I am happy I still had these in my stash as they worked perfectly for this little book! I found clear stickers, and 3-D sticker, and word art...just a treasure trove! With TWO waterfall features, there is a lot of space for photos and journaling! I decided to finally make use of a lot of my scrap paper, and use them in creating these adorable miniature botanical prints and bookmarks!! The size for all of them varies as they are from scrap paper, but you can pick between longer and shorter varieties! For reference, the designs themselves for the first five styles are all about 3 inches, so give or take a few inches depending on the amount of paper around the print. Good morning, Crafters! I have a FULL Authentique tutorial for you today! Check out this spooky cute mini album featuring the Nightfall and Pleasant Collections! (I also found a 6x6 pad of the retired collection Enchanted, so I added a little bit of that, too!) My mini this month is in the classic style that I usually make, but is a little larger than my usual offering. This one is 8" tall by 5" wide with a 1 1/2" spine. There are four pages and two large pockets on the inside front and back covers. The album has FOUR waterfall elements. Plus, there are lots of flaps, pockets, and tuck spots! We have to start off by splicing some cardstock together because we need a 10" x 14" piece, and my cardstock only comes in 12" x 12". Cut one piece of black cardstock to 10" x 12" and a second piece to 10" x 4". Overlap the cardstock to create the 14" width needed. Note: You will need approximately twelve (12) sheets of 12" x 12" black cardstock for this album, if you make the album exactly like mine. For the covers and spine you need two pieces of chipboard measuring 8" x 5" and one piece that is 8" x 1 1/2". Attach the chipboard to the center of the 10" x 14" piece of cardstock, leaving a 1/8" gutter between the spine piece and the cover pieces. Angle the cardstock corners and apply double-sided tape to the flaps. Wrap the cardstock around the chipboard and gently score the gutters. Before you add your hinge mechanism to the spine, cover the spine chipboard with a piece of decorative paper cut to 7 7/8" x 1 1/2". To make the hinge, cut black cardstock to 7 1/2" x 6 3/4" and score on the shorter side at 1", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/4", 2 3/4", 3 1/4", 3 1/2", 4", 4 1/2", 4 3/4", 5 1/4", 5 3/4". Accordion fold the cardstock to create the hinges. You will have four (4) hings that are 7 1/2" tall with 1/4" gutters between the hinges. Attach the hinge mechanism over the decorative paper strip on the spine. Attach decorative paper to the inside of the covers, as shown. Cut the cover papers to 7 7/8" x 4 7/8". Note: if you do not understand how to make this style of hinge, I recommend you do a YouTube search on one of these topics: accordion hinge, tab hinge, hidden hinge. There are many wonderful crafters how have filmed how to make this type of hinge. We will decorate the cover last. I always save the cover for last so that I don't mess it up while assembling and decorating the inside of the mini. To create the inside of the mini, follow these directions. First, we will create some large pockets for the inside front and back covers. Cut black cardstock to 6" x 5 3/4" and score at 1/2" from the edge on three sides. Angle the bottom corners. Use a circle punch to punch a notch in the top edge of each pocket. Create two (2) of these pockets. Add double-sided tape to the tabs, fold, and attach the pockets to the inside front and back covers. To create the four base pages, cut black cardstock to 7 3/4" x 8 1/2". Score at 4 3/4" on the long side. I used a circle punch to make a notch on the top right edge of each the page. We will glue one page to each of the four hinge tabs. See the directions below for proper placement of each page. I add my pages first and then decorate them, however. I will walk you through each page fully before moving on to the next page. Attach the first base page to the first hinge so that the fold is on the right side of the page. This becomes Page 1 of your album. Open the flap and add a pocket to the base page (directions just below). You will create four of these pockets. Cut black cardstock to 3 1/2" x 5 3/4" and score at 1/2" from the edge on three sides. Angle the bottom corners. Use a circle punch to punch a notch in the top edge of each pocket. Add double-sided tape to the tabs, fold, and attach one pocket to the first base page, as shown above. Set the other pockets aside. You will add a pocket to Pages 1, 4, 5, and 7. Decorate the inside front pocket, and then add some tags or other style photo mats. The paper for this large pocket is cut to 5 3/8" x 4 5/8" with a notch as shown. (To see more details, view the attached video.) The paper for the flap on Page 1 is cut to 7 5/8" x 3 5/8". Cut two pieces, one for the front and one for the back of the flap. (See below.) Here is how Page 1 looks with the pocket decorated and filled. Cut paper for the pocket to 2 7/8" x 4 5/8". Cut paper for above the pocket to 5 1/2" x 4 5/8". I created a 6" x 4" card for my pocket and also added a small tag. Flip the page, the back of this page is Page 2 of the album. Attach the second base page to the second hinge, making Page 3. Attach the page to the hinge so that the fold is on the right side BUT make sure that the flap is folded in, to make page 4. Page 2 and page 3 are going to hold waterfall elements, so you won't need pockets on these two pages. (See directions below.) Cover Page 2 and Page 3 with decorative paper cut to 7 5/8" x 4 5/8". Do this BEFORE you add the waterfall elements! To create the waterfall pieces, cut black cardstock to 6 5/8" x 4 1/8". Score at 1/2" from the top edge. Round the two bottom corners. You will need eight (8) pieces for these two pages. (Note: You will need 12 total LARGE waterfall pieces for this album.) Fold on the score lines to create hinges for your waterfall. Add double-sided tape to each hinge and starting at the top edge of Page 2, begin to add your waterfall pages. Add four pages to this page. Add four waterfall pages to Page 3 as well. This is what it looks like under the last waterfall piece. The paper for each of the large waterfall pages should be cut to 6" x 4". You may also use the cut-apart ephemera cards for this. To see all the papers I used, check out the attached video below. Flip Page 3 to reveal Page 4. Open the flap and add a pocket (described above) to the bottom of Page 4. Add the third base page to the third hinge so that the fold is again on the right, with the flap folded inward, making Page 5. Open the flap and add a pocket (described above) to the bottom of Page 5. Pages 4 and 5 are mirror image pages. The back of this third base page becomes Page 6 of your mini and will hold a small waterfall element (see directions below). The paper for the flaps is cut to 7 5/8" x 3 5/8". Cut four (4) pieces, two for the front and two for the back of the flaps. (See below.) Cut the paper and decorate the pockets as explained for Page 1 above. I used some square tags, decorated with Halloween images. To see details, view the attached video. Flip Page 5. The back this base page become Page 6 of your album. We will create a small waterfall element for this page. First we will make a band to hold the waterfall. Cut cardstock to 6" x 1 1/4". Score at one end at 1/2" from the edge. Align the score with the very bottom middle of the page. Round the top two corners. Add a magnet to the underside of this strip. Next, cover the base page with decorative paper cut to 7 5/8" x 3 5/8". Now, we will cut the waterfall elements. Using black cardstock cut eight (8) pieces to 4 5/8" x 3 1/8" and score at 1/2" on the top edge. Round the bottom corners. Attach the waterfall elements to the page, starting at the top edge. Eight (8) little pages will fit. Add a magnet to the top waterfall page. Use the band and magnets to keep the waterfall from "flapping around" when the book is in use. We will decorate the pages in a moment. Add the fourth base page to the fourth hinge, exactly like you added the previous page. This becomes Page 7 of your album. Once again, add a pocket to the bottom of Page 7. Cut papers for your waterfall element to 4" x 3". These are the perfect size for the smaller cut-apart ephemera cards. Also decorate your little "restraining strip." To see more detail, view the attached video. Decorate Page 7 by cutting paper for the flaps to 7 5/8" x 3 5/8". Cut two (2) pieces, one for the front and one for the back of the flap. (See below.) Here is how it looks with the pocket decorated and filled. Cut paper for the pocket to 2 7/8" x 4 5/8". Cut paper for above the pocket to 5 1/2" x 4 5/8". The pocket fits the 6" x 4" ephemera cards perfectly. Flip the Page 7 over. The back becomes Page 8 of your album, and will contain another large waterfall element. To create the waterfall, cut black cardstock to 6 5/8" x 4 1/8". Score at 1/2" from the top edge. Round the two bottom corners. You will need four (4) pieces for this page. Fold on the score lines to create hinges for your waterfall. Add double-sided tape to each hinge and starting at the top edge of Page 8, begin to add your waterfall pages. Add four pages to this page. The paper for each of the large waterfall pages should be cut to 6" x 4". To see all the papers I used, check out the attached video below. Decorate the inside back pocket, and then add some tags or other photo mats. The paper for the pocket is cut to 5 3/8" x 4 5/8" with a notch cut as shown. (To see more details, view the attached video.) Thanks for watching! Now, you may read the directions below for completing the covers of your mini album! Now, let's decorate the outside covers! For the front cover, cut decorative paper to just slightly smaller than 8" x 5". Cut a strip of the same print for the spine at slightly smaller than 8" x 1 1/2". Attach the paper with strong adhesive or with a multi-medium. For the back cover, cut a piece of coordinating paper to just slightly smaller than 8" x 5" and attach. Trim coordinating decorative paper to 2 1/2" x 4 3/4" and double mat it with cardstock (I used black and orange Spectrum Cardstock). Wrap the bottom edge of this panel with ribbons, and then attach this panel to the front of the mini album, approximately 1" from the top edge. Paint a chipboard phrase (spooky) black and add some white accents with a pen. Attach the phrase to the center of the coordinating panel as shown. Glue a bow and other embellishments to the bottom edges of the panel as shown. Matt one of the 4" x 3" Nightfall images with black cardstock and tuck it under the bottom edge of the ribbon as shown. I L♥VE scrappy quilts! I love the idea of making something beautiful and original out of seemingly nothing. I love the idea of making something useful with little or no cost. I love that sense of nostalgia I get when I see an old, worn, hand-quilted quilt, that was pieced together with scraps saved over the course of many years. Scrap quilts are charming to say the least! That's why I had so much fun making these little cuties a few weeks ago. I called them my Scrap Jar Stars. Shortly after posting this photo, my friend Jodi {from Pleasant Home} emailed me and said those stars were just the thing she was looking for to round out her 2012 Sew Scraps Along! She's a girl after my own ♥ and I love that she's dedicating the whole month to sewing with scraps, including lots of great tutorials and giveaways! Head on over to Pleasant Home for all the fun details! Jodi asked me if I'd post a tutorial of my Scrap Jar Stars and maybe give away a few scraps as part of the fun. I was flattered as could be that she asked and happy to do a giveaway. Hopefully, one gals scraps will be another quilters treasure! Edit: I now have a full pattern in my Etsy shop that includes efficient cutting instructions for 4 different size quilts (not just one block) and modified block instructions so there are fewer seams! It's available in paper and PDF. You can check it out HERE. So here we are. A little tutorial just for you! As part of the Sew Scraps Along, I decided to make up another colorway of my Scrap Jar Stars. I pulled out my reds, navys, blues and aquas from my scrap jars. I'm loving these colors against the white. A happy and fresh combo if you ask me. Of course, there's a million different possibilities, so pull out some of your favorite scraps and let's get started! Cutting (per block) (12) 2" bright squares (12) 2" white squares (4) 2" x 3-1/2" white rectangles (4) 4-1/4" white squares* (4) 4-1/4" bright squares* * Note: Cut more than 4 for more variety! I like to make one block first and then when I know what I'm doing I use an assembly line for the rest. So you might like to multiply the cutting requirements (above) by however many blocks you are making. It seems to go quicker that way. Assembly Make Star Points: You will need 8 Half-Square Triangle blocks for each star. Each pair of bright/white 4-1/4" squares will make two HST blocks. Make extra HST's for more variety in your star points :) Step 1: On each of your bright colored 4-1/4" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Pair up each bright square with a white square with right sides together (RST). Step 2: Use a 1/4" seam allowance to sew along both sides of the line. Step 3: Cut on the line to form two HST's. Step 4: Press the seams towards the dark side. Step 5: Use a ruler to trim the HST blocks to 3-1/2" square. By starting out a little big and trimming down to 3-1/2" square your star points will be more exact. I like to use my small 6-1/2" square ruler to do this step. Set the HST's aside. Make 16-Patch: Lay out sixteen 2" squares next to your sewing machine (alternating 8 white with 8 bright). Use a 1/4" seam allowance to sew the squares together in rows. Press seams towards the bright fabrics. Then, sew the rows together (butting up alternating seams against each other and pinning in place). Press row seams in one direction. Set aside. Assemble Star Blocks: First, lay out 2 HST blocks on each side of the 16-patch block to make the 8 star points. Sew each set of HST's together with RST. Press the seams open. Sew two of the sets of HST's to opposite sides of the 16-patch. Press seams towards the 16-patch. Before sewing the other sets of HST on, you will need to make the corner blocks. I like to sew them together at this point (instead of earlier) so that I can make sure the bright corner fabric is not the same as the two star points on either side of it. So lay out the desired 2" bright colored squares in what will be each of the outer corners of the star block. Then lay out a 2" white square next to it (on the inside) and a 3-1/2" rectangle above or below them (depending on which side of the 16-patch unit you will be sewing it on to). Make the corner blocks by first sewing a bright 2" square to a white 2" square with RST. Press seam towards the bright square. Then sew that unit to a 3-1/2" white rectangle and press seams towards the white rectangle. Sew a corner block to each side of a set of HST's, making sure to keep the bright square in the outer corner (see photograph below). Sew two of these units to the sides of the 16-patch unit to complete the Scrap Jar Star. This unit should measure 12-1/2" unfinished. I made four blocks and sashed them with (4) 2" x 12-1/2" white strips and (1) 2" bright colored square in the middle. I'm still deciding whether to make a table topper or a throw size quilt. Any thoughts??? So there you go! If you've been around since the beginning of Lo & Behold Stitchery, you might remember that key fobs were my JAM. Back in the early days, I cranked out SO many key fobs in all sorts of variations and stocked my Etsy shop with them. They are super fun to make and very quick and rewarding! Hello dear visitors! I'm excited to share another mini album I created using gorgeous Graphic 45 papers "Craft Reflections". It's not a new collection and I have had it for a long time in my stash. I thought it was perfect for a vintage style mini album like the one I'm showing you today. The album's dimensions are 5 1/4" X 6 5/8", the spine is 3". It has 8 pocket pages and I used envelopes (standard size 6.5" X 4.5") for creating the base for them. I also used quite a few of Tim Holtz & Sizzix dies, I think they are perfect for the vintage style projects. A quilting blog

I've decided that scrap management is a full time job. (One that I am happy to have!) I've been cutting 3" squares from scraps. This is a stack of 400. I'm on my way to cutting at least 700 (!!!) to make a lap size quilt. You know, I've got to hurry and whip this one up because we are running low on quilts around here. Ha! After cutting up squares, I have lots of odd sized trimmings that I store in this pretty wood bowl. I love to sit down and just sew them together. It's such good therapy. I recently sorted all my scraps back into their color coded baskets. That took a better part of a weekend to accomplish, but it was so worth it! The pattern for the boxes can be found in Sunday Morning Quilts. I have 3 more colors to make...purple, brown and white. Then I'll have a complete set! Meanwhile, my strings are piling up and threatening to take over. They need to be sewn up. Pronto. (This seems to be my most robust category of scraps. Always. I think I need to make another spiderweb quilt. Or 3.) I'll spare you a photo of my tiny ticker tape pieces, thus sparing myself judgment. (hopefully.) I really ought to throw them away, but I can't bring myself to do so. As if that weren't enough, Flaun came to visit and sew yesterday. She generously shared her scraps with me. I've got a whole basket of new-to-me scraps to sew up. Thanks Flaun! I'm so excited to dig into these! My solution to all the scraps? Sew faster. I'll let you know how that goes. :) On the home front....my other full time job... (another one that I am extremely happy to have!) Today is the first day of school. (sniff sniff.) Early morning. (Yawn.) New shoes. New routine. Lots of jitters. And one very sentimental mama. As hard as it was to send them on their way this morning, it was time. I am excited about finding a new routine and having some serious structure in my day. Hopefully with lots of sewing time! Happy Tuesday!

I did a little just-for-fun sewing this week. After working on some larger and more time consuming projects, it was really nice to work on a quicker project. It feels good to start and finish a project within a day or two! This is Scrappy Apples - a little mini quilt that I made for my wall (15" x 15"). I spotted a little apple block in the Spelling Bee book by Lori Holt and I thought it would make a great mini quilt. I decided to make four little 6" blocks - and I wanted to make them scrappy (I'll take any opportunity to add scraps into a project!) I usually struggle deciding how to quilt a mini quilt and this was the case again with the mini apples. I didn't want the quilting to overpower the apples, but I wanted it to "go" with the look of the mini. I ended up doing some small scalloped quilting (a.k.a. clam shell quilting). I found a small circle template that was the perfect size! It was one of the Sew Simple Shapes from Lori Holt. The lines on the template helped me to keep my lines of scallops straight as I went. I used my water soluble marking pen to draw one row of scallops, then I would quilt that one row. Then I'd trace a second row and quilt that, and so on. It worked great! And was less time consuming than I expected it to be. Another bonus was that I didn't even have to switch out my presser foot to a walking foot. My regular foot worked just fine. And when the quilting was done, I sprayed the top with water to make the blue lines disappear! Here's a view of the quilting from the back - I love how it turned out! My finished mini is already up on the wall, brightening my sewing space with it's cheery scrappiness. (Spell checker is telling me that "scrappiness" isn't a real word, but I beg to differ.) Oh - and I get asked about how I hang my mini quilts - the secret is clear thumbtacks! Have you heard about the Spelling Bee book? It's another fantastic book by Lori Holt, jam packed with creativity. It starts with the block patterns for the entire alphabet - both upper case and lower case, all with options for small (4" x 6") blocks and large (8" x 12") blocks. Then there are also picture blocks like the apples I made-- this quilt below shows a few more of them. The picture blocks also have the option for either 6" or 12" blocks. There are also number blocks (0-9), and punctuation blocks, and in the back are pages and pages of quilt ideas! I've got my eye on the "Jack" quilt in the photo above, and the globe quilt below. There are so many great quilt ideas in this book. And it's a great resource if you ever want to add a name, or other text to a quilt. How cute would it be to add a child's name to the back of a quilt you've made for them? You can find the Spelling Bee book here at the Fat Quarter Shop.
