This was our last project at last month's Watercolor Wings class. I had been seeing these boxes pop-up all over Pinterest and just had to include my own version. The base curvy keepsake box is cut in Melon Mambo and then the English Garden DSP was cut from the handle side of the die as well (skip the other section). I then trimmed this cut piece of DSP down at the fold lines so that only the main side face was left- all the folds were trimmed off- and I adhered it to the matching place on the Melon Mambo base. Last, but certainly not least (after all it is what makes the box awesome!), I used the butterfly framelits to cut out the medium butterfly in Melon Mambo and the small butterfly from some vellum. To attach them to the box you have to cut the butterflies in half (gasp!) but don't worry, once you adhere them to the sides of the top split they will look whole and beautiful again :) Flutterby again soon!
Hi Stamper! So, if you follow our Instagram (Jomina.Creations) you probably saw this really cute retro trailer made with the Curvy Keepsake Thinlits (Holiday Catalogue pg. 11) and wondered how to make it. We've decided to post the instructions here and then post a video tutorial later on. We hope you love this project and hope to see your CASE (copy and share everything) of this project! Make sure to hashtag #jominacreations 1. Using the Curvy Keepsake Thinlits (item #135853) cut two of the box thinlit in Whisper White (two makes one complete box) 2. Cut two of the curvy keepsake boxes in Costal Cabana 3. Cut the Coastal Cabana at the scored lines (created by the thinlit) away from the "box base" 4. Cut the Coastal Cabana at 1 1/4" 5. Glue Whisper White Box Together at square base. 6. Glue the Coastal Cabana pieces to the Whisper White box using either Fast Fuse Adhesive (item #129026) or Sticky Strip (item #104294) 7. Using the Simply Scored Scoring Tool (item #122334) score the box every 1/4" 8. Cut Silver Foil Paper (item #132178) in 1/8" strips and glue onto all four sides of the box. Cut to length. 9. Cut Silver Foil Paper in dimensions pictured above. 10. Cut Whisper White paper in dimensions pictured above. 11. Glue pieces together to create a door and window. 12. Glue door and window onto box using Fast Fuse or Sticky Strip. 13. Punch three, 3/4" circles and one, 1/2" in Basic Black paper. 14. Punch five, 1/2" circles in Whisper White paper. 15. Glue the three of the 1/2" Whisper White circles onto three, 3/4" Basic Black circles. Draw a dot with a Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker (item #100082) in the middle of the Whisper White Circles. These are three tires. 16. Dimensional one tire onto the window and one on each side of the trailer. 17. Glue the coastal cabana piece of the curvy keepsake (keep me piece) onto the bottom of the trailer, to create a "hitch". 18. Roll a piece of Basic Black paper and use a glue dot to attach to 1/2" Basic Black circle, this will create a stand. Place into slot. 19. Roll a piece of Whisper White 3/4" thick and glue a 1/2" Whisper White circle to each end. Glue this tube dot onto the "hitch." This completes the project. If we've missed anything, comment below and we'll answer as soon as possible. Hope you love this Retro Trailer Curvy Keepsake Box as much as we loved creating it! Make sure to CASE this project and hashtag it #jominacreations or tag us in the photo! We would love to see your version of this project! Today I wanted to share with you a tutorial for an easier way to make a drunkard's path block. I love the drunkard's path pattern but always hate all the techniques to get to the final product. This tutorial allows you to make a machine stitched block much easier and faster then before. No more stabbing yourself with pins or dealing with curves and open bias edges. This super quick super fun process with have you making tons of drunkards in no time! This process is completed using Dale Fleming's 6 Minute Circle. You can view a video tutorial of Dale's technique here, but in case you missed anything I'll show you step by step how its done! *****Edit - 3/29/16***** It has come to my attention that this technique has a name! It is called Piec-lique and was developed by Sharon Schamber. Here is a link to her daughters rendition of the tutorial. When I originally made this post way back in February of 2013, I did a ton of searching and couldn't find anything on the topic. Thank you to Lani for commenting about the technique and bringing it to my attention. And as promised credit where credit is due! :) ******** This tutorial will make four 3.5" finished blocks. You will need: a background fabric a contrasting fabric fabric safe glue stick (I don't think mine is, but its all I had :) freezer paper scissors/rotary cutter/ruler Ok, here we go! Please ignore my poorly manicured hands! Step 1: Cut a piece of freezer paper into an 8.5" square. Then find the center and using a compass ,either bought or homemade, draw a 5" diameter circle. Then cut it out like this! Step 2: Cut your background fabric into an 8.5" square. Match up your background fabric and freezer paper template, wrong side of fabric to the waxy side of template. With a dry iron, iron your template to the fabric. Using your rotary cutter, cut out the inside of the circle leaving approximately a half inch allowance around template. Step 3: Carefully snip the fabric inside the circle so it looks like this. Be sure not to snip all the way to the edge of the circle. Leave about an 1/8 of an inch gap between snip and template. Step 4: Run a light bead of glue on the edge of the paper template and with your fingers and iron gently press snipped edge around the template being careful not to burn yourself. You may have to reapply a little glue as you go. Make sure you pull tightly enough to form the circle shape, but not so tight as to warp fabric. Press thoroughly. Step 5: Cut a piece of contrasting fabric large enough to cover the hole and have about a inch extra all the way around. Step 6: Next, run another bead of glue around the folded edge of the fabric. I like to start from the center out and do dabs rather then in a circular motion so the edges don't catch. Step 7: Position background fabric over the contrasting fabric and press in place. You'll want to press both sides to make sure you have a good hold. Then carefully remove freezer paper template and set aside to use again. Step 8: With zipper foot attached and needle as far left as possible begin stitching in the ditch all the way around circle. When you've finished, cut away excess fabric leaving a rough quarter of an inch seam. Step 9: Cut block in half both vertically and horizontally. Then square up blocks to 3.5". Voila!!! *Note: You can square up your block to 7" first then cut in half vertically and horizontally. Works both ways :) Step 10: Enjoy! P.S. This was my first time writing a tutorial so please feel free to comment or email if you have any questions!
Creating my own miniature pieces for the dollhouse is exciting. There is a big learning curve, as miniature making is fiddly work, and requires patience and precision. Behold the French Dressing Screen! Sitting at my desk, I created this screen out of paper and paint, with the exception of the legs, which are made from dollhouse staircase balusters. Bristol Paper, which is heavy card stock, is cut according to a pattern found in my favorite book on miniatures: The Big Book of a Miniature House, by French author and miniaturist Christine Lea Frisoni. She also writes a blog, which is linked on my blogroll on my right hand sidebar. If you are reading this on a mobile phone vs a laptop or desktop, you can scroll to bottom of blogpost and click on "view web version" to view the sidebar. Her book has many DIY projects and this one was the one I decided to try. It required Bristol or heavy paper, and acetate paper for the mirrored area, as well as a printed paper in a pretty French vintage inspired design. The screen gets assembled as if a sandwich, with back solid sections layered over with the mirror paper. Then I glued the printed paper to the bottom of the mirror, to line up with the top framework of the screen. The book says to insert the decorative paper at the end, but I found it easier to glue the pink floral paper to the mirror first. The finishing touches are the wooden legs, and the ribboned bows at the top, which are made of thin paper strips. Lea shows how to do this in the book. Its a charming addition to my French dollhouse. I have much work to do on the house, but finding or making pieces that fit my esthetic are ongoing as I complete the interior rooms. Making flowers out of paper is another project in the book. Lea (the author ) makes them from crepe paper streamers, that she paints in a water color way so the colors of the petals are soft and realistic. I used a coffee filter as I did not have streamers on hand. The result was ok, but not as great as the flowers Lea makes.... I will be making more once I buy some streamers. One other neat thing I discovered was three dimensional paint! I used gold 3D paint to add some details to my pastry table and I loved the result. These little projects will add nice personal touches to the house. I have a special Vintage piece of furniture coming.... excited to share when it arrives!
