I have been doing a lot of secret sewing lately and all of it is being done with bright, fun and spring like colours. Which is making me long for spring to get here!! I guess I shouldn't complain too much at least the sun has started to shine regularly and the temperature is finally going up, but we are still covered in snow, with no spring flowers in sight for a while. (this is not an old picture I took it today March 8th) This week I have been having fun with my new AccuQuilt Go!Big. My fantastic husband surprised me with it for my birthday!! And let me tell you it is amazing!! It came with a flying geese die cutter, which I wasn't thrilled about, this block has always caused me problems. Mine are always wonky.....Insert sad, no frustrated face!!! That feeling quickly turned to awe when I cut and pieced 3 blocks and they all turned out perfectly!!! Since then I have purchased the 3.5" tumbler, Bow Tie, and 7" drunkards path, another block that I love but have problems with (haven't tried that one yet will get back to you on that) Putting the tumbler to good use, cutting out about 320 so far, to make some placemats (using 197) from 27 FQ of different reproduction civil war prints. I will be cutting the rest of the fabric this week for a lap sized quilt in tumblers!! I used the Bow Tie cutter to trim up the scrap fabric pieces and was able to put together a sweet table runner! The Bow Tie die is made up of (4) 2.5" and (2) 1.5" squares so when I bought it, I was thinking multi use- block and scrap busting. It's working out great!! (getting a wonderful head start on Mother's Day!) More of What I've Been Up To: Love these prints by Cloud 9, Shapes of Spring. Used them to upsize one of the Sew Sweet Simplicity BOM to a 32" here's my finish.....I had to wait for the binding fabric to arrive (along with some more....I couldn't help myself....) And here's all I can show you of my secret sewing.....I promise as soon as I can I will show you..... A paper piecing quilt project of love, I am helping with..... And a very exciting project I can't wait to talk about and share with you all.......which involves some Sunnyside and Cotton & Steel

After many requests for an update on my hexie project, I figured it’s about time to ‘fess up on where things stand with those thousands of little fabric hexagons just begging to be stitched up! It's been at least 3-4 years in the making and it's taken over a week to put this quilt top together (COVID has really knocked me about), but I can now say a great big YAY! I love how this is turning out. It's bright and happy and scrappy and makes me smile. I started making these scrap hexies a number of years ago - they were leftovers from making the Kingfisher Quilt. I decided to prepare more scrap hexies and refill my Twinings tin. This became my go-to project. It travelled with us to the US and Mexico on holiday back in 2019 and I think it may have even gone with us to Europe in 2018. We drove right across the south of England and I do remember having my hand sewing during that adventure. The hexies have kept me company while I've waited for children in the car, while watching television in the evening or generally when I've been in between projects and needing something to keep my hands busy. I've put the top together and it fits my daughters double bed. I'm going to add some borders to make it that little bit bigger and a more perfect bed size. I was thinking a thin white print border and then a wider black/white print outer border. Someone on instagram suggested appliqueing some vines and flowers to an outer border - I'm not sure if I'll do that. I'm at the almost finished stage and I'm excited to tick it off my WIP pile.

Hello, friends! This time of year I'm all about hand-work projects -- binding, embriodery, cross-stitch, knitting, & English Paper Piecing. Any little project that I can take with in the car or can work on from under the warmth of a quilt. That last one is most important, from under the warmth of a quilt. Have I mentioned to you how COLD it is in Minnesota?! If you've been following along on Facebook or Instagram you may have noticed I've been working on a fun new English Paper Piecing project. It all started with precut package of hexagons from Robert Kaufman in a wonderful rainbow of solids. I wanted to create a unique project using the hexagons and immediately decided upon English Paper Piecing. I really wanted to preserve the array of rainbow colors rather than mix them up, so this hexagon color wheel design was born. I love it! Each Hexagon was paper pieced & hand sewn together in to one complete hexagon ring. If you'd like to try English Paper Piecing, check out this post for more information & helpful tips! Once I had my completed hexagon ring I appliqued it onto White Kona cotton using a simple straight-stitch. I straight-line quilted this mini quilt rather than distract from the over all design with more intricate quilting -- plus, it's my favorite way to quilt! I used Aurifil thread (color 2024, 50 wt.) and my BERNINA walking foot to create these straight-line quilting lines about 1/2" apart. The resulting texture just makes me happy! :) The binding fabric is the black & white feather print from Alison Glass' Sunprints for Andover Fabrics. This print makes a fabulous binding, I can't wait to use it in more projects! Happy Sewing! Megan

Just Stitch The Finished Hexies Together for a Completed Project! Some quilters like making hexies and some don’t. They’re fiddly and require precision. Plus, once they’re made you need to applique them down to a background or carefully stitch them together into a quilt top. These quilt-as-you-go hexies still require precision, but once they’re done …

Hi friends, Today I am excited to share a bit of work that has been keeping me busy the past couple of months for this past Quilt Market - Hexie Pillows! United Notions - Moda Fabrics is now carrying my Modern Handcraft pattern line and to celebrate I created some of my Hexie Pillows using some of the new lines that will be available soon! Moda is well known for their fabrics and especially pre-cuts. The mini charm packs were my inspiration for the Hexie Pillow because of the number of 2.5

Hexie & a Half by Anorina Morris In this months Handmade Magazine - Issue 36 No 11 - you'll find my 'Hexie & a Half' EPP project. It's perfectly suited to the "scrappy" which I love, love, love! It's made up of 2 different EPP shapes - the hexagon and the half hexagon, which are then sewn together and appliqued onto a FQ to make the cushion background. It's a great project for when you're on the go. If you prepare the paper pieces ahead of time, it's very portable. I think I sewed most of the EPP pieces when I was in the car - passenger side of course. Toy Chest 2 Fabric by Penny Rose Fabrics After appliquéing the EPP section to the background (spotty) fabric, I sandwiched a piece of batting to the back and then quilted it with straight lines. I love the texture that the straight line quilting gives the project. Can I just make a suggestion when it comes to the paper pieces? The packets of hexagon papers usually come in lots of 100. Don't buy the two different paper shapes. You can just cut the required hexagons in half and still have enough to complete the whole project. Hexie & a Half by Anorina Morris
Well here's my first attempt at writing at pattern.... Let me know if you encounter any problems and I will try to help. When you get to my description of a bobble stitch please try not to panic,it's not as difficult as it looks written down !! it's just 2 incomplete double crochet joined at the top . There are video tutorials on the web,but be aware some are for a bobble made of 3 stitches ,mine's made of only 2 ( hope this makes sense) Here goes.... Mini Crochet Hexagons Pattern is written in U.S. terms (sorry I know I'm not in the U.S. but I read so many U.S. patterns I find it easier to work this way ) U.S. half double crochet = U.K.half treble crochet To start chain 4.... Join with slip stitch to form a ring Round 1 .... Chain 2 1 double crochet(U.K. treble) into ring ,chain 2 work 1 bobble stitch into ring (bobble stitch= yarn over, insert hook into ring, yarn over, pull back through ring...3 loops on hook.... yarn over, pull through 2 loops....2 loops on hook.... yarn over, insert hook through ring again , yarn over , pull back through ring...4 loops on hook..... yarn over , pull through 2 loops ....3 loops on hook.... yarn over , pull through all 3 loops, bobble complete) chain 2 work bobble stitch , chain 2 , into ring 4 more times then join with a slip stitch into top of first double crochet( 6 clusters in total) Round 2 .... slip stitch into next 2 chain space chain 2 , 1 half double crochet into 2 chain space of round 1....( half double crochet is,yarn over, insert hook into 2 chain space of round 1,yarn over, pull back through chain space...3 loops on hook.... yarn over, pull through all 3 loops) Chain 1 ,2 half double crochet into same 2 chain space into the next 2 chain space work...(2 half double crochet, chain 1,2 half double crochet) repeat 4 more times.... slip stitch into second chain at beginning of round 2 You have completed your first mini hexagon..... When you get the hang of these they really are quick and simple.Honestly!!! I can make 1 in 3 minutes. Another thing you might like to consider hook size.I've made mine with double knitting (u.k. term) yarn and a 4mm hook. This makes the motif quite stiff ,which is great for a cushion cover. If you wanted it to be softer, you could go up a hook size or 2 to ,say, a 5mm hook. This will make the motif a bit bigger but also more flexible.Changing the weight or type of yarn will also create differing effects. Play around a bit till you get the effect you need for your project. Here's two hexagons made with different sized hooks..... 4mm and 5mm . A 1mm change in hook size makes a 1cm change in motif size .The larger size is also more open and less stiff. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've joined mine by sewing them together as this makes the shape more definite. You hold two hexagons together ,right sides facing , and whip stitch, catching only the outer part of corresponding stitches... when you find yourself at the wrong place to start attaching the next hexagon ,I simply threaded my needle through the wrong side of the motif and came out in the desired spot... And continue stitching as before... I expect you could join them by crocheting them together with slip stitch, though I haven't tried it myself I'll stop waffleing on now and leave you to give it a try...have fun !! Jacquie x
After hand sewing 1078 hexies to make 154 hexagon flowers I decided to start stitching them together. 3/4" hexies, each flower uses two different fabrics (no duplicates in quilt). I'll have to sew more hexies to make a nice sized lap quilt, but at least now it is looking like a quilt and not just a jar of flowers.
