As Spring Break approaches, I find that my fifth graders are in need of some reminders as to what it means to be kind to each other. In general, they are sweet kids, but at times the words they use and actions they take, particularly on the playground, aren't the kindest. Our read aloud for the month is Wonder by RJ Palacio so the theme of kindness fit right into our room. It just so happens that a new book, We're All Wonders by RJ Palacio, a picture book intended for younger readers to access the story, came out this week as well. So the timing was perfect. (the two links above are my affiliate links and will take you to Amazon to buy the books.) I began by asking the students what kindness is. We brainstormed a list of ideas and created an anchor chart. Then I read the picture book to the students. Because we had just finished Wonder, they were so excited to read this new version. When we finished, I asked the kids to think of all the ways, in both the picture book and the novel, that people were not very kind to Auggie (the main character). The kids were able to fill our entire circle map in no time. It was easy to recall how people would scream in his face, recoiling at the way he looked. They remembered the names Auggie was called and the no-touching game that was played. The instantly told me about all the awful things that happened to him. I then asked the kids to brainstorm ways that, if they were in the novel with Auggie, they could be kinder to him. Again, they had no problem thinking of ways they could be kind to Auggie. Next, I asked the students to think about their own real life. I asked them to reflect upon how they personally treat others and how they personally could make better choices when speaking to others. Here is where things got a little challenging. You see, when students are talking about fictional characters, or reading news stories about OTHER kids they don't know being treated unfairly or unkindly, they know exactly what they would do if they were there. Because they aren't there. They know they never will be there. But when confronted with their own lives, and real possibilities for what they would have to do to step in or change situations, it is a bit harder for them. So I asked them to brainstorm 15 different ways they PERSONALLY could show kindness to our classmates. (I drew a lot of inspiration for this next part from Study All Knight's FREE Kindness unit, which you can grab here.) The students then used tempra paint and painted 15 (or so) rainbow sunshine rays. They also drew their own Wonder-Inspired portrait. (I have previously done this before, but had them focus on precepts and writing....if you would like to do that, click here. It is one of my fav lessons too!) The students then glued their Wonder portraits into the middle of the rays, used Sharpie to outline and write the 15 ways they could show real kindness in their lives (one way per ray) and were done. They came out amazing. (See the picture at the top of the post!) What is better though, is that the past two days, my students are actively trying to be kinder to each other. They are watching their words. I have seen people purposefully go up to those who tend to wander during group time and invite them into the group. Today, 4th grade starting working on their self portraits, inspired by the art of Tad Carpenter, and the fabulous art teacher Katie Allain. You can check out their art on their Instagram accounts, if you click on their names. He's the artist who designed the cover for the book, Wonder! Here's how we created ours! Materials: Sax 90lb paper Sax liquid watercolors Sharpie markers Pencils hair examples Day 1: Talk about the book and movie, Wonder. I plan on playing the audio book, and listening to it while they work. I demonstrated how to draw a simple outline of a face and a simple hairline, like the artist did. I then demonstrated how to trace/color with a Sharpie, and paint with liquid watercolors. I also put up different hair styles on the screen. I think individual copies at their tables would work better, btw :) Here's my fist 4th grade class, working on theirs today!
As we grow older, we often become accustomed to our environment and lose interest in the little things in life. However, some people don't grow out of their wonderous childlike minds and find the mystery in the ordinary.
Our school has an Outdoor Learning Committee that I am a part of. We all feel very strongly that the environment where the children play outside is just as important as the environment inside our school. We have worked hard to make our playground an area where the kids can run, exercise explore and yes...learn! Outside play plays an important role in children's development! They are working gross motor muscles and getting must needed exercise. They learn how to solve problems such as when social disagreements arise. They learn empathy as they help friends who get hurt. They learn to take risks and see where their limits are and feel empowered as they take those risks and succeed. They create games and role play. They learn science concepts as they discover things in nature and learn to look closer and ask questions about what they see as they discover new things. They learn kindness as they try to save an insect in danger or nurture a plant. They are literally learning about life and life skills as they play outside, so we knew the environment needed to support that. We had an area that we were having some problems with in the middle of our asphalt area. We wanted to turn it into something all of the kids could explore and benefit from and decided to create a Barefoot Sensory Path. We came up with a design and my husband figured out how to make it so that it would be sturdy and last. Our amazing PTO gave us funds to purchase the materials and we had fun shopping at Lowes for items that would provide the sensory experiences we were hoping for. Our team came in on a Saturday and went to work. Our maintenance team had dug the area down four inches so that it would be even with the asphalt. We put down a layer of paver sand, and then the 4x4's. We glued some materials to 2x2 pieces of plywood. The sections were all 2x2. We filled the sections with paver base and tamped it solid. My son even came and helped! Here is the finished frame. Of course, we had to test it out! Here is the finished path!! We were so excited for the kids to try it! It was a huge success!! The kids absolutely loved walking on it with bare feet, crawling on it and feeling with their hands and even laying in it enjoying the warmth radiating from it from being in the sun. Another new area we created was an area to create roads, ramps, etc. using scrap wood, cars, signs and other loose parts. This lovely lady below had the vision for this area! We also added an area to really work those gross motor muscles. Mr. Doyle created a boundary to keep it all contained to one area. We filled it with stumps, logs, and large branches. The kids have created obstacle courses and love lifting these up to show how strong they are! They jump, balance and create here. They collaborate and problem solve. They use both critical and creative thinking skills. This is a great area to develop 21st Century Learning Skills as they play! For our nature lovers, we have an area with plants for them to explore and observe. Some are edible such as peppermint and fennel. We have cone flowers, milkweed, irises, sunflowers and more. This area is a great place to explore and observe insects also! Here are some other things on our playground where they can let lose and have fun! Our playground is still a work in progress! We have many more ideas that we want to implement some day! One step at a time!

A simple homemade vegan bagels recipe made with just a few basic ingredients--the recipe is completely vegan and free of dairy and eggs. Attempting to make bagels at home is quite a challenging task, and it will be easier for you to buy them from the store. Keeping this in mind, I wondered how we could recreate store-bought bagels at home by following a simpler process and fewer steps. This was when I came up with this awesome recipe. Easy to make Vegan Bagels When someone hears “vegan bagels,” they assume that they'll be tricky to make--but they are actually quite easy to prepare. The final product will be a tasty and chewy texture with a tender exterior straight out of the oven. You will need to gather only a few basic ingredients to prepare these simple vegan bagels, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the final result. I personally made these several times over the past few weeks, and I wonder why I haven’t given out this recipe before. After all, is there anyone who doesn’t like homemade bagels? Fortunately, these bagels are a breeze to make, and they are completely vegan. If you discard the common meat toppings e.g. prosciutto or salmon, these bagels are 100% plant-based. The buns are totally vegan and free of dairy and eggs The cream cheese used is also vegan The addition of avocado on top doubles up the taste You can add any toppings based on your taste (vegan or not). For example, tomatoes make a great all-vegan topping, while pescatarians can add boiled eggs or salmon if they wish. You have my word that these bagels are incredibly easy to make, or I wouldn't be making them so often. In all other cases, I will sit and wait for the dough to rise up for hours before baking. The beauty of these vegan bagels is that they involve the use of just 7 ingredients, are fast, easy to make, and, most importantly, they copy the texture of authentic bagels in just 25 minutes. They are also great for any event or season, and they are egg and dairy-free! Vegan Bagels Recipe Guide Pin Ingredients Bagels 2 cups white flour ⅓ cup soy milk (unsweetened) 1 tsp dry yeast powder 1 tsp sesame seeds 1 tsp poppy seeds Pinch of salt Directions Mix flour, yeast, water, and salt in a mixing bowl. Knead until you end up with a flexible dough. Allow resting for approx. 2 hours or until the dough size becomes double. Preheat your oven to 370F/190C. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Place the dough from the mixing bowl on your counter and form it into a big ball. Cut and split into 4 equal size pieces and shape each into a smaller ball. Using your index finger and thumb, gently press to form a loop into the center of each ball and turn around until that hole gets bigger. Repeat the above steps with each ball. Let everything rest for 10 minutes. To prepare your water bath, fill a big pot with water and bring to a boil. Then, lower the heat and allow it to simmer. Submerge the bagels into the simmering liquid and let cook for 40 seconds, then flip over and cook for an extra 30 seconds. Note that the bagels’ volume will rise at this point, so ensure there is plenty of space in your pot. Take off the water bath and transfer it onto a baking tray or mat. Take a brush and brush them with a bit of soy milk. Sprinkle the poppy and sesame seeds on top. Transfer the bagels to a preheated oven and cook for 25 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Once done, take off the heat and place it on a cooling grill to cool them down for a few minutes. Prepare some toppings of your choice to serve them e.g. tomato slices, vegan salmon, avocado, etc.
