I have previously shown how to make a kraft file insert from a file folder. That is pretty easy to do, but today I'm going to show you an even quicker and easier way to create a similar insert. Start with a regular, A4-size envelope like this: Mark a horizontal line 210mm from the bottom of the envelope: Cut along this line and discard the top of the envelope. Here's what you should be left with: Now fold this piece in half along a vertical line, like this: What you are going to do now is to mark out and remove a funnel-shaped central piece from the top layer of your envelope only. As shown below, this will leave you with a little folder with a flap at each side the works exactly like a kraft file insert. This project costs nothing if you start with a used envelope and takes no more than three minutes. It's not quite as sturdy as the real thing (unless you have a really thick envelope, or maybe a tyvek envelope) but it's very easy to quickly replace it if it starts to get tattered with use.

I first heard about the Traveler's notebook last summer, but never knew why it was so popular. I thought it was too free and messy for me. I thought it was more for artists and I didn't see myself as artsy really. So I never got myself around to buying one. I was asked to post on how I saddle-stitch the booklets I make for the Midori Traveler's Notebook, which I'm happy to do. These instructions will work for stitching pretty much any booklet and if you follow them closely you can't go wrong. I'll start by assuming you can assemble your pages and your cardstock cover, like so: People will suggest that you use binder clips to keep the pages together and this is a good idea when you're starting out. If you're going to use them, clip either side of the spine, top and bottom, so you have four clips in use in all. Using an awl, make a hole that goes through all the pages and the cover. The best way to do this is the hold the booklet half closed and rest the spine along a folded-up newspaper. This works better than - say - a cutting mat, because it allows the point of the awl to penetrate further though the cover. This will prove important later on. Make two more holes each side of the central one, positioned like this: Now, you can measure these out by eye, but the eye can be unreliable and inconsistent. When I make a stack of booklets, I like to see the stitching properly aligned, like this: Whilst I am aware this might be seen as a little ... er ... fussy, I think it's worth the extra effort, and it turns out that it's not much extra effort at all. You could measure the hole positions each time, but that can get boring very quickly. Here's what I use: Yes, it's a piece of string. It's as long as the booklets are tall (210mm for MTN booklets) and has evenly-spaced markings from a Sharpie marker. The ends have been dipped in PVA glue to stop them fraying. Each time I want to make holes, I lie this string inside the half-closed booklet along the central spine and make holes where the markings are. Easy. Anyway, you should be now have 5 holes along the spine of your booklet. For ease of reference, I'm going to label them A to E, like this: Turn the whole booklet over and the same holes can be seen to go right through the cover too: Thread a tapestry needle with some strong thread. Some people use dental floss for this. I use beading thread in the 0.2mm thickness. I've never known it to break in use; it's quite hard to cut even with scissors unless they're razor sharp. Thread your needle, and pass it through the central hole, hole C from the inside of the booklet to the outside: Now put the needle through the hole above (hole B) from the outside through to the inside: Next, the needle goes through the top hole (hole A) from inside to outside: Now you go back though hole B from the outside: Here comes the break in the pattern, because you miss out hole C and instead by pass it, going through hole D from the inside to the outside: Then back the the pattern as you go through hole E from the outside: Now come back through D from the inside: And now finally, from the outside, come though hole C: Your booklet is now fully stitched though every hole: In a moment you are going to tie off the ends, but first take a closer look at hole C: What you're looking for is one of the ends of the thread to emerge from the hole on either side of the big stitch the goes from B to D on the inside. If both threads are currently on one side of it, use the needle to slip one end under the stitch. Now pull both ends tight and knot them together on top of the long stitch. Make a double knot and trim the ends close to the knot. And that's it; you're done. If this is a Midori Traveler's Notebook booklet you're making, you can down use a ruler and rotary cutter to slice it down to 110mm wide.

This is a new concept in Midori inserts, based on an idea by my friend Rhomany (her site is here), who helped me work out the details and build the individual layouts. As you can see from the pictures above, this is an all-in-one 48-page insert with a variety of pages. The idea is that you have a fresh insert for each month. The insert starts with a title page: Behind that, there's a two page spread for the current month: You can fill in the dates and note down key events and monthly goals and make notes for a monthly debrief - matters to carry forward to the following month. Behind the month spread, there are six weekly spreads that look like this: Finally, the back two-thirds of the booklet is freeform note space: What you may not be able to see unless you click to enlarge that spread is that there's a faint dot grid pattern, which lets you use these pages very flexibly, which you can hopefully see in the pictures at the top of this post. The real beauty of this insert is that it can do so much for you while only taking up a single booklet's space in your notebook cover. And saving your used monthly books will create a very useful and well-ordered archive. You can download this insert here. What you'll download is a PDF file, in 'pre-shrunk' format. This is ready to print straight away, without any need to use booklet format on your printer. Just print this straight to A4, with duplex set to flip on the short edge (I'd recommend you print just one or two pages first to make sure your printer deals with this correctly and make adjustments as necessary.) Hello again! My new sewing machine and I have become inseparable over the last few days and today I want to share with you my latest project.... A Fabric Midori Travelers Notebook cover... This is another planner and holds my monthly calendar, weekly diary, diet/weight loss and fitness records and a journal booklet. You can find out more about the world of Midories from here Its taken several attempts, and there are still things I would change, but I'm really pleased with it and wanted to do a little Tutorial for how I made it. Step 1) Gather all your equipment; I chose two bits of fabric that measures approx 8 3/4 inch x 10 3/4 inch, a fabric hole puncher, an eyelet press (and eyelets), elastic x 2 (one for pen loop and one for inserts and to fasten the midori) and a piece of lining fabric (interfacing would have been better here, but I didn't have any so I used two pieces of old thin fleece) Step 2) Lets get going; With wrong sides together, and the pen loop inserted into what would be the back of the midori, pin and sew around three sides (leave the bottom biggest edge open). Step 3) Insert the lining; Turn the right way out and insert the lining (if you are using interfacing, this would need to be done before you sew the pieces together wrong sides out) Step 4) Finish off the bottom Fold over the bottom edges and iron flat, then sew alone this edge with a top stitch... ...continue this all the way around. You may want to do a second top stitch around too, but I didn't. Then iron it again...and again, and again!! Step 6) Practice makes perfect! Next, I practiced using my eyelet hole and puncher on some scrap fabric to make sure I was happy with the result (make sure you practice with the same number of layers as you have on your midori - so for me, this was 4 layers) Step 7) Thread the elastic; With the eyelets in place (two at the top, two at the bottom and one in the centre back for the elastic that holds it all together) thread your elastic and tie a knot for the midori booklets to slide into (you can see lots of Youtube videos for how to do this) and make a loop for the holding elastic. (The top picture here is from the inside and the bottom is from the outside) Now all you have to do is fill it will your booklets and your done! (I have four booklets in mine) And there you have it! Needs a bit of improving of course, but you can get the gist! If you make one using this tutorial, I'd love to see it! And please be kind and tag me! That's all for now.
