The Bullet Journal system seems to be becoming popular in planning circles. First described by Ryder Carroll at www.bulletjournal.com, it constitutes an effective system for organising the notes you make in your daily notebook. Today I am offering for free download a Midori Traveler's Notebook insert designed to make it easy to use Bullet Journalling. The opening page lets you note the date range of the book, allowing for easy archiving when it's finished. Turning over, you'll find the book index. The index is a crucial part of the system, as Bullet Journal users will know. It lets you organise your special pages - those that don't relate simply to the current day. Then come 52 pages of the Bullet Journal daily template I've designed. Although there's no rule that says you have to, Bullet Journallers tend to use a grid to lay out their notes. I've included a standard 5mm grid background with a system of date signifiers at the page edges. You can use a pen or a highlighter to quickly identify the date for each page, as shown below. If you'd rather not use the signifiers, they're fairly unobtrusive and won't get in your way. The pages are numbered, of course, to make it easy to use the index. Finally, the the very back of the insert, I've added a key to the Bullet Journal systems and structures: You can download this insert here. What you'll download is a PDF file. This is ready to print straight away, without any need to use booklet format on your printer. Just print this straight to A4, with duplex set to flip on the short edge (I'd recommend you print just one or two pages first to make sure your printer deals with this correctly and make adjustments as necessary.) Once you've printed out the pages, you can bind them into a booklet and cut to size using these instructions or these ones. And if you'd like to roll your sleeves up and play with the source Word file, here it is. UPDATE: North American users should lobby their authorities to join the rest of the world adopt the international standard for paper sizing. In the meantime, they can download their own version formatted for Letter paper: PDF version or Word version. Since landscape Letter paper is taller than the required 210mm, a little extra trimming will be required.

This is a new concept in Midori inserts, based on an idea by my friend Rhomany (her site is here), who helped me work out the details and build the individual layouts. As you can see from the pictures above, this is an all-in-one 48-page insert with a variety of pages. The idea is that you have a fresh insert for each month. The insert starts with a title page: Behind that, there's a two page spread for the current month: You can fill in the dates and note down key events and monthly goals and make notes for a monthly debrief - matters to carry forward to the following month. Behind the month spread, there are six weekly spreads that look like this: Finally, the back two-thirds of the booklet is freeform note space: What you may not be able to see unless you click to enlarge that spread is that there's a faint dot grid pattern, which lets you use these pages very flexibly, which you can hopefully see in the pictures at the top of this post. The real beauty of this insert is that it can do so much for you while only taking up a single booklet's space in your notebook cover. And saving your used monthly books will create a very useful and well-ordered archive. You can download this insert here. What you'll download is a PDF file, in 'pre-shrunk' format. Hello again! My new sewing machine and I have become inseparable over the last few days and today I want to share with you my latest project.... A Fabric Midori Travelers Notebook cover... This is another planner and holds my monthly calendar, weekly diary, diet/weight loss and fitness records and a journal booklet. You can find out more about the world of Midories from here Its taken several attempts, and there are still things I would change, but I'm really pleased with it and wanted to do a little Tutorial for how I made it. Step 1) Gather all your equipment; I chose two bits of fabric that measures approx 8 3/4 inch x 10 3/4 inch, a fabric hole puncher, an eyelet press (and eyelets), elastic x 2 (one for pen loop and one for inserts and to fasten the midori) and a piece of lining fabric (interfacing would have been better here, but I didn't have any so I used two pieces of old thin fleece) Step 2) Lets get going; With wrong sides together, and the pen loop inserted into what would be the back of the midori, pin and sew around three sides (leave the bottom biggest edge open). Step 3) Insert the lining; Turn the right way out and insert the lining (if you are using interfacing, this would need to be done before you sew the pieces together wrong sides out) Step 4) Finish off the bottom Fold over the bottom edges and iron flat, then sew alone this edge with a top stitch... ...continue this all the way around. You may want to do a second top stitch around too, but I didn't. Then iron it again...and again, and again!! Step 6) Practice makes perfect! Next, I practiced using my eyelet hole and puncher on some scrap fabric to make sure I was happy with the result (make sure you practice with the same number of layers as you have on your midori - so for me, this was 4 layers) Step 7) Thread the elastic; With the eyelets in place (two at the top, two at the bottom and one in the centre back for the elastic that holds it all together) thread your elastic and tie a knot for the midori booklets to slide into (you can see lots of Youtube videos for how to do this) and make a loop for the holding elastic. (The top picture here is from the inside and the bottom is from the outside) Now all you have to do is fill it will your booklets and your done! (I have four booklets in mine) And there you have it! Needs a bit of improving of course, but you can get the gist! If you make one using this tutorial, I'd love to see it! And please be kind and tag me! That's all for now. I stopped using all of my planners because it just simply wasn't working for me. I fell out of love with them all and couldn't find myself being productive in using them. I needed a new system, a simple one. So I dumped everything and just started with a blank slate. I found a Piccadilly journal at the thrift store and started using it as a brain dump/bullet journal. The Midori Traveler's Notebook is a design classic. But it is expensive. I wanted to see if I could make one myself. It turns out to be pretty easy. I started with the leather. It's not easy to buy leather in the UK for some reason, but eBay came to my rescue. The type of leather you need is 2 to 3mm thick and you're clearly going to need a piece large enough to for the notebook cover. I found an eBay store specialising in leather and ... er ... related specialist interests. They had lots of pieces of leather. Here's what I went for. I bought a 'Large' piece, which measures approximately 30cm x 60cm, large enough for at least two full-size notebook covers and a few smaller, passport-size ones as well. The piece cost me £13.50 plus 99p postage. This was the single biggest expense. I was delighted when the piece came that it had three straight, squared edges that needed no trimming at all. To measure the piece, I simply laid down my real notebook cover on the corner of the large piece and drew around it with a grease pencil. If you don't have a notebook cover to draw around, for a full-size cover you'll need to cut a piece that is 215mm x 255mm. The next step is to set the fold. 3mm leather doesn't fold easily, but I found a great way to bend it to my will. I folded it in half to create a spine and laid the folded leather - kicking and screaming - between two pieces of wood that I then clamped together. I didn't tighten the clamps all the way, but enough to hold the fold in shape. An hour later, I released the leather and although it sprang open somewhat, I had an established fold that would become permanent with use. Next, using a tiny leather punch and a hammer, I made 5 tiny holes in the leather along the spine. One was dead centre, then at each end I had one 5mm from the edge and another 20mm from the edge, like this: Then, I used some thin elastic. With the notebook lying open in front of me, with the inside towards me, I threaded the elastic like this: Pulling the loose ends tightly, I tied them together in a reef knot and trimmed the ends. Just like with the real thing, this is what will hold the main insert in place. In the Midori Traveler's Notebook, the securing band comes out of a hole in the back cover, but I wanted mine to emerge from the spine. This is what the fifth hole is for. Getting the elastic both ways through that little hole is the trickiest part of the whole operation, but I worked out how to do it. Pass some very thin thread through the eye of a thick needle - say an embroidery needle. Tie this thread into a loop with a knot as small and tight as you can manage. Now pass the elastic through this thread loop. You should have a rig that looks like this: Pass the needle through the central hole from the inside to the outside and then cut the thin thread. This will leave you with a loop of elastic on the outside and loose ends of elastic on the inside, like this: Tie off the ends, and you now have your closure loop. You are now done and will find your new notebook works just like the Midori Traveler's notebook. Here are some pictures of mine. First of all, here is what the top of the spine looks like. You can see the two holes and the elastic threaded through them. Next, here is the securing band emerging from the central hole in the spine: And finally, a top view showing the cover loaded with three notebook inserts using the rubber band method: This project is easy enough that I'd encourage anyone to have a go. The finished result is superb and will last a lifetime.
