This marine biology, microscopic art print features views of the organisms classified as Discoidea, or microscopic marine microbes. This scientific illustration is a giclee print reproduction from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature) which was published in 1904. ABOUT THE MAKER: Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor, and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny, stem cell, and Protista. Haeckel promoted and popularized Charles Darwin's work in Germany and developed the influential but no longer widely held recapitulation theory claiming that an individual's organism's biological development parallels and summarizes its species' evolutionary development. This vintage art print is one of many by Ernst Haeckel and makes an excellent choice for your home or office, or, as a gift for any fans of biology, or antique scientific illustrations. We offer this print as a fine art giclee print in many different sizes on fine art paper, canvas (matte or glossy), or as a professionally gallery wrapped canvas print. WITH OR WITHOUT PAGE TITLES: We can provide your print with or without the original page title you see around the perimeter of the image, it's your personal preference, just let me know when you place your order in the "Notes To Seller". Our default is to create your print WITH the page title information, so, if you DON'T want it included in your print, please tell me that when placing your order. OUR GICLEE PRINTS: Your marine biology, microscopic art print will be created using archival, fade-resistant, pigment inks, heavyweight, museum-quality paper and a 9-color process fine-art printer to ensure the most vivid, detailed and long-lasting print. To prevent fading, as with all prints, please never expose them to direct sunlight. To protect your investment, we recommend that you mat and frame your prints. There is no mat or frame included with this print. SIZE INFO: This giclee print is offered in the most popular sizes to make matting and framing a breeze with your local retailer. The print you will receive will measure exactly the dimensions you ordered. It is designed in such a manner that all of the main image will fit well within the standard mat that comes with frames that you can purchase at many retail stores. BORDERS: All of our prints are carefully positioned with an approximate quarter inch border on all sides for matting and framing adjustments, although this may vary slightly based on the size of print you order and the size of the original image. If you would like a different size border, or need to know the exact border size, or a borderless print, just let me know in the "Notes To Seller" when you place your order. Although we don't currently offer mats or frames, we do offer the following PICTURE FRAME SIZING guidelines on how best to display your prints. MATTING & FRAMING TIPS: Select the PRINT SIZE for your needs, then add the mat dimensions to the print size to determine what your final frame size should be. When you plan to mat a print, the rule of thumb is to order your PRINT SIZE one size smaller than your frame size--this allows for the addition of the mat of your choosing. For a statement wall, bigger is better, both with the print size, and the frame size. TYPICAL FRAME SIZES AVAILABLE AT RETAIL STORES: The 5" x 7" FRAME size is a very popular size because they are the perfect size to display on a desktop at work, home, or, make an excellent gift choice 8" x 10" FRAMES are top sellers | Many 8" x 10" frames come with a mat for a 5" x 7" image, allowing you to highlight your PRINT. 11" x 14" FRAMES often include a mat for an 8" x 10" PRINT | this size makes a real statement hanging in that perfect spot in your home or office. 16" x 20" FRAMES typically include a mat for an 11" x 14" PRINT |This will usually provide just over 2" of matting on each side of your image. The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition lets us see beyond the capabilities of our unaided eyes. Almost 2000 entries from 70 countries vied for recognition in the 37th annual contest, which celebrates photography through a microscope. Images two through 21 showcase the contest's winners in order, and are followed by a selection of other outstanding works. Scientists and photographers turned their attention on a wide range of subjects, both living and man-made, from lacewing larva to charged couple devices, sometimes magnifying them over 2000 times their original size.

As the Apollo program took form in the early 1960s, NASA engineers always kept the safety of their astronauts at the fore in light of the enormous risks they knew were inherent in the goal of landing on the Moon and returning safely. Wherever possible, they designed backup systems so that if a primary system failed the crew would still have the means to return home safely. Sometimes creating a backup was not always practical. For example, the Service Module’s engine needed to fire while the crew was behind the Moon to place them in a trajectory that would return them to Earth. There was no practical backup if the engine failed. But even in that instance a plan was worked out to use the Lunar Module’s (LM) engine as a backup. D

The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this view of a phytoplankton bloom near Alaska’s Pribilof Islands on Sept. 22, 2014. The Pribilofs are surrounded by nutrient-rich waters in the Bering Sea. The milky green and light blue shading of the water indicates the presence of vast populations of microscopic phytoplankton.
