A Victorian micro mosaic, and yellow gold pendant locket, comprising two micro mosaic panels, set in 18 karat yellow gold. My favourite thing about this Victorian 18K Yellow Gold Micro Mosaic Pendant is the exquisite design. What’s yours? Perhaps the intricate gold wirework? Or its statement size? This glorious Victorian micro mosaic pendant is designed as 2 shield shaped pendants, the larger suspending the smaller. The larger shield shape panel contains an exquisitely crafted micro mosaic, depicting a swan on the water, surrounded by reeds. The swan is wonderfully detailed, facing to the left, and with feathers picked out in an ingenious colour palette, creating light and shadow. The swan floats atop pool of water, its white reflection cast across, with reeds shooting up around the edge. The sky is a luxuriant red hue, which contrast perfectly with the bright white and cool blue of the micro mosaic. The micro mosaic is held within a yellow gold bezel and is surrounded by a border of twisted wirework. The top of the shield is adorned with further twisted wirework, creating a scrolling motif, and is decorated with granulated beads. The larger shield is suspended from a large bale, adorned with twisted wirework, which will accommodate a substantial chain, if so desired. From the large shield, drops a smaller micro mosaic shield, of a matching design, depicting a swan facing to the right. Verso, the larger shield is complete with a hinged, glass covered locket compartment, within which a photograph, portrait miniature, or small memento could be placed. This piece is likely Italian in origin and has a bloomed finish (where the piece is dipped in a solution which dissolves the alloys in the gold, leaving a fine layer of pure gold). The pendant is in good condition, with a small amount of wear to the bale, and potentially a few small losses to the micro mosaic. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. Swans mate for life, and thus symbolise fidelity, meaning this piece was likely a love token, and would likely have had a portrait miniature or early photograph within the locket compartment. Pendant length (including bale): 86.5mm Pendant length (excluding bale): 75mm Pendant width: 31mm Pendant depth: 7mm Small pendant length: 26.5mm Small pendant width: 17mm Gross weight: 14.5g Hallmarks: none, tests as 18 karat gold, circa 1860 Layaway (payment in instalments) is available on this item, just send me a message to enquire, or read through the FAQ for more information. This is a lovley rare antique micromosaic bracelet. The bracelet is Italian and was probably made in Florence or Venice in the 1930s era.The glass which the tessarae are made from comes from the famous island of Murano,Venice. The bracelet consists of ten square micromosaic panels all linked together. All ten mosaics are the same and consists of a delicate floral design. The bracelet is in excellent condition, with no missing tessarae. The hook fastener works well. There is a little tarnishing at the back on the brass, but this is to be expected on a piece of this age. This is a beautiful rare micromosaic bracelet. Its gorgeous on.Please study the pictures andcheck the sizes. Micro Mosaic artists tiny handwoven Venetian enamel rods obtained from the high temperature melting of nine base colors with diamond dust, realizing endless combinations of tones and nuances. The rods are then broken into thousands of precious micro-tiles which are placed one by one, and give to the drawing a three-dimensional effect. This is how this exclusive and unrepeatable object is born. To the shine of gold and to the fineness of diamonds is added the crowning art of micromosaic, which grew through new and more performing elaborations refined in the research and development laboratories of the Maison allowing an everyday improve and growth of this ambitious art.
A rectangle of black marble set with a micromosaic of the Colosseum, a fountain in front of it and to its right a triumphal arch. Several buildings can be seen on the left, and three figures stand or sit in the near and distant foreground. The picture is signed on the lower left: MOGLIA. F.
This is just a magnificent example of the Italian art of micro mosaic work. The mosaic displays a recumbent Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a namesake of King Charles II. This breed has been very much a part of the aristocratic and royal families of Europe and has been the subject of numerous paintings and tapestries throughout the centuries. Superbly rendered in subtle hues of brown, cream, tan, green and white, even the smallest details, such as the feathering of the dog’s coat are apparent. The oval shaped plaque has been set onto Venetian goldstone within a silver bezel banded with a braided silver frame. The underside reveals the original brooch fittings. Measurements: 1-1/2 inches (3.7 cm) in length by 1-3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width. Weight of 15.5 grams (10.0 dwt). Hallmarks: Two indistinct European hallmarks on the "C" clasp.

A fantastic, Victorian, Grand Tour, Archaeological revival micro-mosaic brooch featuring a beautiful onyx-encapsulated spray of sentimental, Victorian flowers. The Grand Tour was a rite of passage starting in the late 17th Century. It continued for about 300 years, tapering off into obscurity around the turn of the 20th Century. A typical "Grand Tourist" would be an educated and wealthy Englishman, German, Scandinavian, or American. The trip was a method of architectural, cultural and social study. The itinerary could vary, but usually a Tour started in France and ended in Italy. It was common to collect various art, jewelry, and souvenirs to commemorate the trip. These items were usually sent home for loved ones, kept as mementos, or formed the basis of new life-long collections for the men who took the trip. The term "micro mosaic" was coined by wealthy 20th-century collector Sir Arthur Gilbert in reference to Roman mosaics composed of little glass bricks called tessarae. These were sold as fine jewelry to Victorian ladies in the early and mid-19th century, when the tourism trade was at a peak in Rome. Another enduring trend from the Victorian Era was the incorporation of the Language of Flowers, wherein every blossom and leaf imaginable held secret meaning. It was so commonly practiced that floral messages were incorporated into jewelry, with our brooch serving as such an example. Bright posies stand out from a black background, all executed with tiny tiles to compose the mosaic design. Included are: pink rose for sincere love, jasmine for faithfulness, red carnation for fascination, freesia for innocence and purity, yellow rose for friendship and love, chestnut leaves meaning do me justice, Guelder rose leaf for wild at heart, and beech leaf for prosperity. A charming, colorful and romantic little piece of art with a message worth deciphering! Details (approximate) Dimensions: 1.5" x 1.75" Weight: 19.4 grams Materials: Gold, onyx Tesserae Metal: 14K yellow gold Marks: None Condition: Fair antique condition commensurate with age and wear; some cracks on tiles; our jeweler can clean up the onyx at the owner's request.

This micro mosaic necklet and hair pin are some of the finest examples of the nearly extinct craft we have seen. The base of the necklet is crafted from 800 silver (marked to rear '800') and set with thousands of tiny glass fragments to form a delicate 'iris' floral spray. The accompanying hair pin depicts another iris and is three pronged to allow it to slide into the hair. The remarkable thing about this particular suite is the impeccable condition that it is in, with very minimal losses to the tesserae. There is a 'S' shape clasp to the rear of the necklet which is original to the piece and is working well. The entire body of the necklet is articulated and moves with movement of the wearer. We date the two pieces to between 1885 and 1900 and it is likely they originate in Italy. Micro mosaics are created by assembling fragments of multi-coloured glass into a base to create an image and was most popular in Italy in the mid 19th century, although their creation goes back to the Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries. Marked - '800' for silver purity Total length of necklet - 43cm (approximately) Total length of hairpin - 5.75cm Total weight combined - 41.4 grams

A superb glove box dating to the mid-19th century with the highly sought-after combination of exotic Coromandel wood and micro-mosaic Tunbrdige Ware / Tunbridgeware. The interior has been professionally re-lined in a hand-marbelled paper and the box comes with a working tasselled key. Excellent condition, measuring 9 3/4" x 3 1/2" x 2 3/4". The term Tunbridge Ware originally described wooden objects made as a sideline by woodworkers in the Tonbridge area for sale to the many visitors thronging to the nearby Wells. An early form often consisted of whitewood items carrying printed labels depicting local scenes. The distinctive mosaic style, made by glueing sticks of different woods side by side and then slicing it into layers, came in the mid- 19th century, and it is this form that is now generally understood by the term ‘Tunbridge Ware’. Nowadays the ware is usually associated with Tunbridge Wells, but there is good reason to suggest it originated in Tonbridge. In 1847 Tunbridge Ware was described as the ‘only manufacture of consequence’ established in Tonbridge town. Item ID 34148.
