Hello Everyone! Thanks for stopping by for a peek into our wonder-filled first grade life!! This week my kids have poetry on the brain!!! We are having so much fun! Today I read the infamous poem, "Sick" by Shel Silverstein. If you're not familiar with it, a little girl lists off all the things that are wrong with her... two pages worth! :) She obviously can't go to school! But wait! It's Saturday? And she''s off to play! :) My class looooved that poem. We decided to write another list poem, this time using the same idea as Silverstein, but with "OUCH!" as our focus (We're working on ou/ow sounds in wordwork this week!). We brainstormed all the things we could think of that would make us say "Ouch!" and then each kiddo had fun creating his own poem on a giant bandaid! They turned out great!! OH! I forgot to tell you that a little motivational touch was to let each one put on some bandaids!! Most ended up on faces! LOOOOOVED it!!! Writing poetry can be spontaneous, cheap, rewarding, fun literacy learning!! OH! And first graders can write poetry! "I'm a poet! Don't you know it?" :) I have a feeling we'll be writing poetry all month!!! YAY! Can't wait to see what we can do!! Stay tuned!!! Joyfully! Nancy

This is a super easy and fun game for your emergent/perceptual number group. It is great for counting and early addition/subtraction. You just need a packet of toy frogs and a little blue dish. I buy about 6 packets of these little plastic dishes at the beginning of the school year. You can pick them up for $1 or $2 for a set of 6. They are very handy for maths games, art and craft activities and providing a place for cards and equipment in games and activities. Tell your small group of students that 6 frogs (or another number) are in the pond today... Tell them to close their eyes. Flip the pond and leave 2 (or another number) out on top of the dish. Ask the students to work out how many frogs are still in the pond. Some students will need help to count, or may require a number line/chart to assist. ENCOURAGE strategies such as counting-on and counting-back. If you like, you can get your students to discuss the frogs after each round of the game and record their findings on this worksheet. You can download it for free from google drive! I told you it was simple! But I promise your little learners will love it!
