Steel, brass, silver, gold, wood, mother-of-pearl Pierre Le Bourgeois (died 1627) French (Lisieux) ca. 1620 This smoothbore hunting gun is one of the earliest firearms equipped with a flintlock of French construction. It was made for Louis XIII of France (r. 1610–43) in the workshop directed by Pierre Le Bourgeois's brother Marin (ca. 1550–1634), to whom the invention of the flintlock mechanism is traditionally ascribed. The decoration of the gun includes the crowned monogram of the king.
Tamiko Kawata was trained in sculpture at Tokyo University. She grew up in Japan, in the wake of World War II, and immigrated to New York in 1962. Her approach is informed by modernist ideas of Dada and Assemblage. Experimental in nature, Kawata explores the physicality of humble materials via multiplicity and unexpected juxtapositions. She creates category-defying works that range from collage and sculpture to major site-specific installations. The safety pin is her signature building block, but she also incorporates other everyday, utilitarian objects in her work with similar effect. Kawata has exhibited extensively, both in the United States and internationally. Her work is held in numerous public collections and she is the recipient of multiple awards and residencies from institutions such as such as the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Pollock/Krasner Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, MacDowell Colony Residency, Yaddo Art Colony, and The Millay Colony for the Arts. Inspired by animalistic forms both living and extinct, artist Mylinh Nguyen welds alien creatures from brass, bronze, and silver. Using a variety of machining techniques each creature takes form over several weeks, originating first as haphazard sketches in a notebook before evolving into permanent metal forms. Nguyen is a master of articulating even the most minute skeletal details of imaginary beings with metal, such as her seed-pod-meets-jellyfish series Meduses or her 2012 series of aquatic life, Sous-Marins. This wall sculpture was designed by Curtis Jere and produced for Artisan House, in USA in 1991. It is made of black painted metal and represents a jazz band. Curtis Jeré was the shared pseudonym of two artists, Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels, who used enamel, brass, copper, and steel to create decorative wall sculptures. Fels and Freiler were brothers-in-law who began collaborating in 1963, sharing an interest in what they described as “gallery-quality art for the masses.” The two employed a variety of traditional techniques—such as enameling, pouring resin, and bronze casting—to create abstract metal works of clustered, modular shapes. The sculpture displays patina consistent with age and retains original signature and date.
