Mestiza de Sangley This stunning portrait of a Mestiza is printed on museum quality fine art paper that is 100% cotton paper; is archival acid & lignin free. The print will arrive mounted with a fine quality mat as pictured and ready to frame. The image is 8x10 and 11x14 inches when mounted with mat. A 19th century portrait of a beautiful "Mestiza de Sangley" woman, by Francisco Van Camp, ca. 1875. She is believed to have been a member of the wealthy class at the time. "Sangley mestizo" was a term used in the Spanish Philippines during the 16th-19th centuries to differentiate ethnic Chinese/Indios from other types of island mestizos, such as the native Indios, (native people), and people of Spanish ancestry. The Chinese mestizos were given the legal status of colonial subjects of Spain. Their unique rights and privileges were denied to the pure-blooded Chinese immigrants (Sangleys) and indigenous persons (Indios). Francisco Van Camp was a Dutch photographer with a studio in Manilla during the late 19th century. No one has been able to attribute this portrait to a particular woman, and therefore I consider her mysterious beauty to make her the "Mona Lisa" of the Pacific Islands; or rather the "Pearl of the Orient".
