The statue of Kusunoki Masashige on the grounds of Edo Castle (the Imperial Palace) is perhaps one of the most photographed statues in all of Tokyo. However, until the other day, I never tried to take pictures of it as I was always turned off from the crowds of tourists swarming around it. I decided to wait until the late afternoon, hoping to avoid the tourist crush. I was basically right--- I missed it and was thus able to take some time to get some of the shots I wanted of this amazingly detailed sculpture. I hope you enjoy them. Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336) is the epitome of what Japanese imperialists would want you to believe is absolutely loyalty to the throne. It is for this reason that his statue graces a park on the grounds of the Imperial Palace, which was once known as Edo Castle—home of the Tokugawa Shoguns, who ruled Japan from 1603 until the Shogunate was overthrown by the imperial loyalists in the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Kusunoki fought on the side of the emperor Go-Daigo in an attempt to wrest control out of the hands of the Kamakura shogunate and bring political power back to the imperial court. Kusunoki succeeded in helping to restore imperial power until one of the Kamakura shogunate’s generals, Ashikaga Takauji, made his own grab for power and succeeded. Go-Daigo ordered Kusunoki into battle against the Ashikaga, a battle he knew he couldn’t win, but never-the-less he obeyed orders, was defeated and committed suicide. And for his sacrifice made in the name of imperial loyalty, he was revered as a “super hero” of sorts during the Meiji Period and this very nice statue was commissioned to grace the grounds of the Imperial Palace.

Latihan tersebut digelar sebagai bentuk respons China terhadap pemimpin Taiwan Tsai Ing Wen bertemu pimpinan DPR AS di California. "Latihan ini sebagai peringatan keras atas tindakan provokatif kelompok 'Kemerdekaan Taiwan' dan kolusi mereka dengan kekuatan asing," kata juru bicara Kementerian Luar Negeri China (MFA) Wang Wenbin di Beijing, Senin. Menurut dia, PLA sudah melakukan langkah yang diperlukan untuk menjaga kedaulatan nasional dan integritas wilayah.
