Segundo contou ao pessoal do site Bored Panda, Dean começou a fotografar aos 17 anos e há pelo menos 2 décadas se dedica exclusivamente à fotografia de vida selvagem, modalidade que, além de oferecer grandes desafios, permite que o britânico – que sofre de ansiedade – passe longos períodos de tempo longe do ambiente urbano e em contato com a natureza.Já com relação aos ratinhos, Dean decidiu criar um espaço – o Windows on Wildlife, em Dorset, na Inglaterra – onde criar esses animais, para que outros fotógrafos pudessem retratar as criaturinhas em condições controladas, uma vez que essa espécie de roedor, por seu comportamento, oferece excelentes oportunidades para fotos.
