Hearts filled with the darkness of sin, and the shedding of blood may hardly seem like prime preschool teaching material, but I assure you that it is. This is the Gospel, which we are privileged to teach. Not our Gospel, but the Gospel of our Lord and Savior. I firmly believe, that just as an adult, children must come face to face with their sin to realize their need for Jesus as their Savior. Children blessed to be raised in a Christian home are used to conforming their behavior, and generally being "good" kids. Often this earns them admiration and praise. At a very young age, they can easily develop the erroneous mindset that their "goodness" is what saves them. The point that we want to sink into their hearts through this lesson is that only the blood of Jesus has the power to wash away our sin and save us. Teaching the Gospel isn't always cute, but it is the truth, and it is the power of God unto salvation to those that believe. May you be richly blessed for having the courage to teach the truth! Now let's get to the lesson, shall we? Bible Truth: Red - Jesus died, shed blood for me.Bible Story: The blood of Jesus is the only thing that wash away my sin. Bible Study: Romans 3:25-26; 5:8-9; Ephesians 1:7 sing See My Dark Heart - see this post for a visual idea O the Blood of Jesus teach the mirror lesson For this lesson you will need: a hand mirror a black wet erase marker (I found mine at Wal-Mart) a picture of Jesus on the cross a clear spray bottle water red food coloring a rag or paper towel A wet erase marker is similar to a dry erase marker, however it can only be erased when moisture is applied. To prepare, fill the spray bottle with water and enough drops of food coloring to color the water red. Begin by holding the mirror for each child to see their own reflection. SAY: See how special God made you? God made each and every one of you, and He loves you so much. He wants to be your friend, but we have a problem. The Bible says that we are all sinners. We have all sinned and disobeyed God. As you describe sins that are familiar to a preschooler, color in sections of the mirror with the wet erase marker. You may describe sins such as disobedience (to parents and teachers), lying, stealing, fighting and hurting others. Hold the mirror for the children to each see their distorted reflections. SAY: God still loves you and wants to be your friend, but look, He sees all your sin, and He cannot be your friend when there is sin in your heart. This makes God sad. I know! I want to be God's friend too, so I'll just try really, really hard to be really, really good and that will make my sin go away! As you describe how you will try to obey, be kind and always tell the truth, use the dry rag or paper towel to try to wipe the mirror clean. Let the children try to wipe the mirror, and see that they are unable to remove the sin on their own. SAY: No matter how hard we try, we cannot get rid of our sin by ourselves. But God loves us so much, that He made a way to wash away our sin, so that we can be friends with Him. Show the children a picture of Jesus on the cross. He sent Jesus, His only Son to die on the cross, so that His blood can wash away our sin. Only the blood of Jesus has the power to wash away our sin. Jesus died on the cross, and shed His blood for us. His body was full of owies and blood, but He didn't stay dead. He came back alive, to show us that He has the power over sin. When we pray and ask Jesus to forgive us, His blood washes away our sin. Spray the mirror with a couple squirts from the water bottle, and then begin wiping the mirror with the rag or paper towel. As you wipe the mirror clean, lead the children in a simple sinner's prayer. Hold up the clean mirror and SAY: God is so happy that you asked Jesus to wash away your sin! Now you can be God's friend just like He created you to be. Let me see how happy you are that Jesus took your sin away! Thank you Jesus for Your blood that washes away our sin! Hold the mirror for the children to clearly see their smiling reflections. craft at the cross mosaic For this craft you will need: white card stock this print out 8 1/2" x 11" piece of cardboard an Exacto knife a small spray bottle water red washable tempra paint black construction paper glue sticks To prepare, print the print out onto white card stock. Use the knife to cut out a cross shape from the cardboard. Position the cross to leave room at the top of the page for the heading. Fill the water bottle approximately 1/4 with red paint, and then fill it the rest of the way with water. Shake the bottle to thoroughly mix the water and paint. Cut the black construction paper into 1" strips. In class, help the children lay the cardboard over their print out and spray the red paint over the cross. Remove the cardboard. Show the children how to tear pieces of the construction paper to fill in the space around the cross.
Hi, friends! It’s almost April, and you know what they say… April showers bring May flowers! With that being said, this post comes just in time to
I found this clipart here Edit: I made two outfits for the above turkey after posting this. I have been searching and searching for years for a CUTE turkey. Today I found not one, but two that I like. Thanks to a blog I follow http://mrsjumpsclass.blogspot.com/ she posted the idea of reading the book "Turkey Trouble" by Wendi Silvano. It is about a turkey who disguises itself to hide from the farmer. She follows up the lesson with an art and writing activity involving making turkeys in disguises. I am reading this book to the entire first grade the day before Thanksgiving. I have made up sample costumes for the kids to use if they want. Below is the other turkey I like which was part of a free activity Deanna Jump was giving away on her teacher store. I altered his feet to make them more "shoe" accessible. I removed the feathers from both turkeys to make it easier to dress them. The illustrator in the book, Lee Harper, gave his turkey feathered "hands" so that he could hold things. I will probably alter the second turkey the same way. But...I had a LOT of fun today making costumes for the second turkey. Below are some of them. For 11" x 17" Coloring Page Costumes go HERE, These can be printed on 8.5" x 11" paper to fit the turkey printed to the same size. Go to my post for the larger coloring page costumes. If you are a teacher and have a great way to use these, please let me know. It would be fun to load them onto the Smartboard and slide the outfits over the turkey. You could print them out in black and white and let K-1 kids color, cut, and paste them onto the turkeys. I am going to print my turkeys out on 11" x 17" paper with clothes the same size. This way there is room on the back to put a short story they write about the disguise. The hats and crowns have to be cut out separately. Due to the length of the turkeys neck, they didn't fit on the page with the turkey. Here are the two turkeys in a couple of their outfits.

Photo Source: http://www.rapides.k12.la.us/agendas/bboard.htm Here's another fun ocean-themed bulletin board display that will help you herald in the warmer spring months with dynamic style! We found it through the Rapides Parish School Board website - the display was used to brighten up the lobby of the Hadnot-Hayes Elementary school and it would be perfect for other early childhood learning spaces as well! Ocean Animal Crafts Your students will be excited to learn that they will be instrumental in creating this classroom display. Ribbon Octopus. Create octopus body cutouts from assorted colors of construction paper. Have students use a paper punch to create eight holes at the bottom of the cutout and tie pieces of pre-cut ribbon as "legs". Textured Starfish. Create starfish cutouts from assorted colors of construction paper. Have students collage round dry cereal (like Cheerios or Apple Jacks) to the surface of the cutout to create a textured feel and appearance. Suction Cup Octopus. Create octopus cutouts (these should include the body and legs) from assorted colors of construction paper. Have students use round dry cereal to create "suction cups" on the bottom of each of the eight legs. Tissue Paper Seahorse. Create seahorse cutouts from assorted colors of construction paper. Have students cut a long strip of tissue paper, folding it back and forth so that it resembles an accordion. Invite them to attach the tissue paper "ruffle" along the back of the seahorse. Rainbow Collage Fish. Create fish cutouts from assorted colors of construction paper. Using torn bits of art tissue paper or construction paper, have students collage rainbow colored stripes on their fish. Sea-Sational Learning Adventures Background: Cover the top two-thirds with aqua blue background paper to create water and the bottom third with natural or brown bulletin board paper to complete the floor of the "seascape". You might also consider creating the ocean "floor" with sand paper for a textured feel and appearance. Title: "Sea-Sational Learning Adventures" or "Sand-Sational Learning Adventures". Border: Add a large wave border to the top of the bulletin board. Decoration: 1) The Seascape. Use ric rac in various shades of green as well as green construction paper cut into wavy strips of various widths and heights to create clumps of seaweed along the ocean floor. Add a bit of sand to white craft glue (if you didn't already use sand paper) and "paint" patches of texture onto the tan or brown bulletin board paper. 2) The Sea Creatures. Decorate the rest of the space with your students' sea creature creations! Have you ever used an ocean theme in your classroom? We'd love to hear about it, so be sure to leave us a comment below!

Today is my anniversary (14 years - wow!) so I'm spending some time AWAY from the computer with the hubs, but I have another fantastic blog to showcase for you today! Read on to find out about the Tongass (I never knew what that was!), a king-style author's chair, a memory binder, and much more!! :) So you might be wondering what the Tongass means. If you didn't already know, the Tongass National Forest is our nation's largest forest and it's located in Southeast Alaska. It's 17 million acres of rainforest awesomeness and I live smack dab, right in the middle of it all. This coming fall will be my 6th year teaching 2nd grade in my hometown of Juneau, Alaska. Check out my blog by clicking the image below: Personal life? I am a wife to a wonderful, handy-man husband, a mother to a 1 year old chunk baby who we nicknamed Cheeks, and we have a yorkie named Buggaboo. We live in a house built in the 1960s and have been remodeling it for the last 3 years...fun, sweat and tears! Here's one of my favorite pics of Cheeks and I (at his 1 year photo shoot): What is your favorite subject to teach? I love teaching 2nd grade. Looove it. My favorite subject to teach is Writing Workshop. It is the only subject area my school doesn't have a required curriculum to use, therefore, I have a little more freedom to teach the Common Core how I see fit. This, to me, means being able to get ideas from Pinterest and buy things on TpT! I love being able to see the dramatic differences in student writing from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, it's a very rewarding feeling after a lot of hard work on ours and our students' parts, and probably one that keeps me loving my job. What would we see if we dropped by your classroom? If you dropped by my classroom, you would see lots of color, but nothing that matches! I have anchor charts everywhere (organized by subject area of course!) by the end of the year, a bright word wall, a king-style author's chair my husband made, a microfiber chaise lounge chair (I picked up for free from Craigslist!), and a U-shape table where I meet with students and also where I do my own work (I got rid of my teacher desk last year...liberating!). What do you do when you are having one of "those" days? If I'm having one of "those" days, I immediately go to my memory binder. It's full of appreciations that, as our counselor would say, make my heart smile! What's one teacher resource you can't live without? One teacher resource I could not live without in my classroom is my volunteers! Before I had my son, my mom, who is a retired home daycare provider, came in about once a week and volunteered with prep work or helping students, whatever I needed. Now, she watches Cheeks while I'm at work (Get this: for FREE! Love her!). I was worried how I was going to leave every day at 3 to be the mom I want to be (we have a union with contract hours 7:30-3:00), but it turned out more than okay. I'm not sure how it happens, but for one reason or another, I usually end up with lots of adult help. Those extra eyes, ears and hands make A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I had a student teacher a couple of years ago, which connected me with her Advisor, who teaches an Introduction to Teaching class where students need to complete 25 hours of classroom time...I was fortunate enough to have 3 college students in my room (that's 75 hours!) this year completing their hours! 2 of them even came in regularly after their hours were completed and continued helping! I also had a high school student volunteer for an hour every day in the morning, which made Math a breeze! I had 2 regular parent volunteers that came in and/or worked on projects at home for me. I keep them busy with everything from copying, working with kids, making bulletin boards, and chaperoning field trips. I'm incredibly grateful and fortunate, especially for the time it allowed me to be with my son instead of working on the weekend. Give us a glimpse of your teaching style by sharing a brief summary of a favorite classroom activity/project. My favorite classroom activity is Muffins with Moms and Donuts with Dads. This is a day where an adult (could be aunts/uncles, grandmas/grandpas, friends, etc.) comes in to visit in the morning. I hold my Donuts with Dads in December and Muffins with Moms in March (because it is easier to remember!). I send out an email asking for food/drink/supply donations and usually have more than enough people happy to bring something in. This year, I even made a little muffin craftivity and donut craftivity for students to do, and they were a hit! I start the morning off with a quick welcome and thank you, followed by juice and pastries while the students read to the adults. There are, of course, students who don't have a family member or friend to partner with...NO BIGGIE! I have extended the invitation to my volunteers who are there for that exact reason! After a while, I pass out crayons and a template with a face/neck for everyone to take turns drawing their partner. While they draw, they interview one another. After it looks like most of the drawings are done, students come up in front of the room and introduce "their" adult and tell some things about them. Then we take a group photo, say thank you and the adults leave. Altogether, one and a half hours of fun! What is one of your blogging goals for this year? I am so new to the blogging world (I began in February), that my only goal is to just continue documenting my life. I love looking back at previous posts and seeing what I was doing just a few months ago...a virtual diary! I actually never thought I would have as many followers as I have now, and although it's a great feeling, it's sort of weird to know real people read my blog! A few of them, I consider to be celebrities even, so that's even more weird. Not that my husband knows who The Fern Smith is, haha! If you'd like to know a little more about my hometown, check out my post about life in Juneau by clicking the image of the Northern Lights lighting up the Mendenhall Glacier below:
