Our gaze falls between two rows of trees on the tables of the café and the summer idleness of the children and adults; the Elbe and the busy shipping traffic can be seen on the right-hand side. The play of light under the dense canopy of leaves and, in particular, the sunspots on the ground that are characteristic of Liebermann, create the impression of an impressionistic snapshot. Book plates are page illustrations, pictures, or photographs, that are printed separately from the text of a book, but they are bound in during production. Pre-1960’s, bookplates had no writing or images on the reverse. In order to save money by the publishers, the majority of bookplates since the 1960’s have either writing on the bookplate, usually the title of the painting, and/or writing and images on the reverse. Due to the process used for plattings, bookplates retain the color, texture, and intensity of the original painting. 1984 Max Liebermann Poster, Self Portrait with Drawing Pad 1912, Berlin Secession expressionist, artist gallery exhibition, wall art decor This Max Liebermann exhibition poster is from the Galerie Nierendorf in Berlin, Germany for an exhibition in 1984 featuring "Selbstporträt mit Zeichenblock" of the Self Portrait with Drawing Pad. Dimensions: 31 in x 19 in (78 cm x 49 cm) Max Liebermann was a German painter and printmaker, and one of the leading proponents of Impressionism in Germany and continental Europe. In addition to his activity as an artist, he also assembled an important collection of French Impressionist works. The son of a Jewish banker, Liebermann studied art in Weimar, Paris, and the Netherlands. After living and working for some time in Munich, he returned to Berlin in 1884, where he remained for the rest of his life. He later chose scenes of the bourgeoisie, as well as aspects of his garden near Lake Wannsee, as motifs for his paintings. Noted for his portraits, he did more than 200 commissioned ones over the years, including of Albert Einstein and Paul von Hindenburg. Liebermann spoke out often for the separation of art and politics. In the formulation of arts reporter and critic Grace Glueck he "pushed for the right of artists to do their own thing, unconcerned with politics or ideology." What is special about exhibition and gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced. Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear and tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, and edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm. These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard tube for protection. See the FAQ for more information on shipping, tracking and insurance options.
