This has been my students' favorite project this year. The whole point is to have students use the geometric terms that they've learned in a creative way. You can use it as a way for students to learn and practice new vocabulary, or as a review project, or even as a culminating project after a unit on geometry. I have been developing this project over time, and I've worked out many of the kinks. It's not too big, and not too small. Basically, the students have 26 items that need to go on the Map/Town. Some of the items are lines or segments, which are the roads. Once those are placed, then the students need to place particular items in particular angles. For example, they need to put two coffee shops at corresponding angles. Or a bridge connecting supplementary angles. There is a template that has some of the basic lines (roads) already placed. You can use this for ALL of your students if you want them to focus on putting the other items in the correct angles. This would be much easier to grade, since it would be easy to locate all the required items, but it's not as creative. I used it for my inclusion kids. I heard the best academic language between students as they worked on this project - and they seemed to care more about the different types of angles as they did the project. This project includes: An overview, a list of required items, a legend template, grading guidelines, a modified scoring rubric, and photos of my students' work. Also, Geometry Glossary compliments the project very well: Geometry: Student Glossary and Vocabulary Other Geometry Products include: Volume of Cylinders, Cones, Spheres, and Composite Figures FREE Scaffolded Notes: Finding the Area of Parallelograms and Trapezoids Area & Perimeter: Triangle, Parallelogram, Trapezoid, Circle & Composite Figures Volume of Pyramids, Cones, and Spheres FREE Area of Rectangles and Trianglese FREE Angles Angles Angles FREE Understanding Angles: A Coloring Activity! Earlier this month I came across an idea from @misscalcul8 that was apparently taken from @msrubinmath! So I carried on the tradition and modified it slightly myself, making it totally on the computer, no bad handwriting days! I printed out 7 copies on a color laser printer and laminated them, then cut out all the pieces of 6 of them. The seventh one is my master. I also printed out 6 blank copies and laminated them. Each set of 30 cards was put in a baseball card protector, hole-punched then put on a ring. Today, was the day I got to use it with my 3 Geometry/Geometry Honors classes. Their desks (individual tables) are already in groups of 3, so each group got a laminated blank worksheet, a set of 30 laminated cards and a blank worksheet for each student to fill out and save as notes. The students were shown how to get started using the document camera, then they set to work. As each group finished, they asked me to check their answers before they filled out their own worksheet. Two classes went by before I thought that I should take pics for the blog! And of course, all I had was my cell phone! They didn't turn out too bad. I recently came across this idea on Pinterest, and I LOVE it. I am sorry, I don't know who the original credit goes to for coming up with this idea is...if you can claim it - let me know :) As we all know, getting students to understand the whole IDEA of a proof is difficult. Then throw in theorems, postulates, reasons, statements UGH...it's too much. The reason I love using Uno to start teaching proof is that you begin the lesson with something students are familiar with - many have played Uno before. The general idea is to give students some number of Uno cards. There is a card for them to begin with [GIVEN] and a card for them to end with [what they are trying to PROVE]. Students are also given some number of additional cards. Then they are asked to find a way to get from the GIVEN card to the PROVE card by playing a hand of Uno. For example, start the students with this layout of cards. Students may realize that if they start with the blue 8, the game could proceed by playing the green 8, then the green 1, the yellow 1, and finally ending with the yellow 3. The cards must be played in this order...if they aren't, the rules of the game are not followed. After a bit, you could introduce the Wild Card - it can be played just like in real Uno...you can use it to change to any color. It helps you move through the game, or in our case, the proof. Students must realize that they can't complete the game without using the Wild Card to change to the green color. After the students understand the idea, you could provide students with extra cards that aren't needed for the proof, but could be included. It isn't WRONG to put them in the proof, but they make the game (or proof) longer than necessary. Or, you might be given an extra card that CAN'T be included in the game - it doesn't fit at all. For example, In this case, the 5 isn't necessary at all. It's tempting to use it after the blue 0, but then you can't proceed without any of the other cards. Notice that we could just use the red 0 and the red 7 to finish the proof. The red 2 isn't necessary, but could be included. The proof would just be longer. After students understand the idea of sequencing the cards, then you can introduce the two column proof format. Want to try using this in your class?
