The last two components of my math block are the math lesson and lesson assessment. I use the 5-E lesson model to teach new math content. I like the 5-E model because it allows the students to explore and discover the content on their own before I provide additional information and strategies. The 5-E model also allows me to facilitate the lesson through questioning and assess the students' understanding throughout the lesson through my observations. While I regularly plan my lessons using this format, I have found it necessary to adapt the format to fit the needs of my students. With that in mind, I will add that this lesson format may take me more than one day to complete and I sometimes complete several explore and explain cycles before getting to the Elaboration stage. It all depends on the students! I have included the lesson format below along with a description of each of the five Es and activity ideas that can be used to address each component.

I absolutely love this post from great maths teaching ideas for a trigonometry-pile-up. However, I don't teach trigonometry in my 8th grade math classes but I do teach Pythagorean Theorem. I decided to make triangle stacks that cover this topic. The first unit for my Algebra students is Pythagorean Theorem. It isn't a topic we usually cover in Algebra but the students are eighth graders and they will be tested on this material so we will cover it at the beginning of the year. Toward the end of the school year I will use this activity with my Pre-Algebra students as well. Silly students, don't look for answers here. You will not find them as I don't post answers that can be copied. (The diagram is definitely not to scale.) The correct worksheet is the downloaded copy. It has the corrections. Sorry for the confusion. I need to update that picture one of these days. All of the answers are integers so I may use this in conjunction with the Pythagorean Triple lessons that I will be doing with the students. Students will place numbers in each of the triangles starting at the bottom so it will be easy to follow their work. They willstart at the bottom of the puzzle to find answers and work their way up to the top triangle to find the missing side. I plan to have the students place this in their interactive notebooks. I can't tell you how many times I made this diagram. I thought it was perfect until the area where the green, blue, yellow and purple triangles intersect. I was 1 cm off, Yikes! So I adjusted the picture and hope you understand what it means. All in all I am very pleased with how it turned out. It will be interesting to see how it works with the two different groups of students. My concern is that it will be too easy for the Algebra kids but too hard for many of the Pre-Algebra kids. I'll let you know. Click here to download the Pythagorean Stacks worksheet. Hope you all are enjoying your summer! School starts in one month for us. Too much planning to do and so little time. UGH! Til next time, Jan

Last year, I found (and made my own version of) a study sheet called "Words into Math" for my students in Algebra 1. (Credit: I Speak Math) I decided this summer to adapt it using posters, word strips and velcro into an activity. I bought colored poster boards at the Dollar Tree and began cutting out each sign from a different color. I drew the arrow and parentheses on half sheets of white poster board. I had bought word strips the year before at the Dollar Tree (yes, it is one of my favorite stores!) I wrote out all the words from the sheet above on the word strips and trimmed them. I cut 1 inch strips of velcro and placed the soft side on the words and the other side on the posters. Here is a picture of my work in progress. This is what the students will see when they come in. I will hand out the words on strips when they walk in. Since there are 34 words, some students will get more than one. I will explain the activity and have a couple of students at a time place their word(s) on the poster(s). If someone is struggling, he/she can ask a classmate for help. As a group, we will discuss the words and determine if all of them are placed properly. This is my intro to word problem solving for all levels that I teach. It will be new to some and a refresher for others. These will be hung at the back of the classroom from the ceiling on clips with string (Lakeshore Learning store in Tampa). This is what the activity looks like when it's ready to store. Words into Math UPDATED: I noticed that the picture of the Words into Math Worksheet and the uploaded doc had errors. Both of those have been corrected and re-upoaded. Sorry for any inconvenience!
