This post is dedicated to Mor over at A Teacher's Treasure. Last weekend I watched her video on Interactive Student Notebooks (click on the link to check it out for yourself) ... and I was so inspired I knew I couldn't wait to "kick it up a notch" again in my math journals. This was the piece I was missing in my math journals - and before I watched the video I didn't even realize I was missing something. Her interactive student notebooks are based on the right side and left side pages. The students' right side of the notebooks all contain the same information (direct from the teacher). The left side of the notebook contains the students' thinking, knowledge, and reflection on the lesson. She has a terrific resource packed with over 100 templates for "left side of the page thinking". You can see it by clicking here (and it's even on sale right now!). I couldn't wait until September to start using the ideas in her fabulous resource, so we started using her strategies this week. On Monday we were learning about Order of Operations. I took them outside for a fun order of operations hopscotch, then we used the sidewalk chalk to fill the basketball court with problems and solutions. You can read my post about it here. So of course, we needed a foldable to go along with our new knowledge. I needed it to be quick and easy because I wanted to spend time discussing our new "left side" thinking. So, quick and easy it was. We used sticky notes and arranged them in a hopscotch pattern (to tie in our outside activity). Underneath each sticky note was the word for each step (under the "B" was brackets). I added a little extra information (including our learning goal) for them to copy, and that was that. This is the left side of the journals. Students rewrite the learning goal from the right side of the page (in student-friendly language). Then they write "What I Know". We do this before we do the lesson (it's highlighted in green to show that now we can "go" on with the rest of the lesson). After the lesson they write "What I Learned", "Proof" (where I want them to write a problem and solve it), and then a "Reflection" - this one is completely up to them - they can reflect on and show their learning in ANY way they want. This particular student wrote a mnemonic device for memorizing the steps to order of operations. After our test midweek, we started our next unit. This short unit encompasses angles, triangles, and polygons. We started with angles. I wanted to do a fun, interactive element to our journals, so we made angles using two coloured pieces of construction paper cut into arrows, and attached them to our pages with a brass fastener. I had them glue the bottom arrow to the page, leaving the second arrow free to move into whatever angle needed. We practiced how to measure an angle, then I had them create angles of various degrees. The red colour made it very easy for me to see who had the concept right away, and who needed a little extra assistance. We added a foldable underneath our interactive angle tool. It was a three fold foldable. We wrote the titles of the angles on the outside. Underneath each flap we had a diagram of the angle, a definition, and examples from the classroom. The students really enjoyed finding the different examples in the classroom. The students also completed a "left side" for this activity, too. For the reflection, a lot of my students completed a picture of some sort of picture with the different angles labelled. But one of my favourite reflections was this girl who wrote a little song to remember the different angles. I'm so excited about the evolution of my math journals!!! My mind is already swimming with ideas for next year. Thank-you SO much, Mor! Happy Sunday!!! I pulled out one of my favorite math books to review some geometry terms this week. I read "Sir Cumference and the First Round Table." I read the book and had my students use AngLegs to create the polygons in the story. We reviewed vocabulary including sides, vertices, angles, parallel, perpendicular, right, acute and obtuse. As I was reading, I remembered the tree slab my husband had cut for my science display. I ran and grabbed it and used it as a prop for the ending with Lady Di Ameter, Radius and Sir Cumference. My impromptu lesson was a hit!!! I love the AngLegs to teach my fifth graders about the types of triangles and quadrilaterals. They click together and have protractors that also click on to measure angles. I have six bags and found that there was plenty for all of my students. (thank you Donor's Choose)

The debacle of taking grades.... I know some teachers that take a grade on EVERYTHING. Meaning, everything the kids do, they take a grade on and put in the "gradebook." I can't do that. BUT, I do use everything as an informal assessment. I used to have these nice, LOOOOOONG, drawn out plans for small groups. I was really proud of my plans for my small groups. But, then I realized I was missing out on some great teaching opportunities because I HAD to do those plans. lol Well, I decided to try something new and I've "thrown out" those lesson plans and started using our work throughout the day as a "telling" for what I need to do for small groups. I do it for both reading and math - if I see there are a handful of kids that are having trouble with a concept, then I will pull them back. Or if it's after I've already done my small groups, then I will do it for the next day. OR, if I have almost an entire class do it?? Then it'll just be a whole group lesson. Here - I happen to have an example from this week, that I actually took a picture of. Last week, when we were doing Sarah's er, ir, ur pack, I used one of the activities as an informal assessment, which will lead to my vocabulary lesson next week... They were doing the word sort, and I noticed that almost EVERY person did this...... SO, I'm guessing that they don't know the words "lurk" or "smirk" - lol. So, I will be using those two words as one of my vocab words... well, the correct spelling of lurk anyway - ha! Click the pic to down load - and there are "directions" for box for in the download for ya. In case you were wondering where I got the spelling activity - it came from Sarah Kirby Let me tell you, I will own ALL her word work packs eventually! lol In fact, this week we're getting ready to use her /oo/ pack. She has some really great ideas in them! There are certain people/sellers that have year-round activity packs...and I have them ALL Like Kathy Law's Color By Codes Sailing Through First's Super Sentences Yvonne' Math Journal Prompts and Anna's Math Journal Prompts Katie's Busy Teacher Denise's Printables Pack Lisa's Monthly Thematic Graphic Organizer and now Sarah has been added to that list. Also, this week, we've been working really hard on our 3-digit numbers, especially with all the skills in my Numbers Every Day pack - and as we've been doing it, I've been making a few tweaks....I just uploaded a revised version - go snag your updated version if you've bought it! I've actually been updating a lot of packs lately - you've seen the Thunderstorm pack and my Bear Snores On pack that I've recently updated. Next on my list to do some major updating are some of my first packs.... Don't forget - tomorrow is the big TpT Super Bowl Sale! (the extra percentage is only on the 3rd - but my store will still be on sale for the 4th) Make sure when you check out you put in "super" as the code to get the extra 10% off my sale prices! Here are few of my favorite things :)
Life has been crazy busy lately as always, but I am so proud of myself today! I left school at 4 PM, stopped at the grocery store for a few items on my way home from school with my oldest, and then came home and made a delish dinner of spaghetti and meatballs, italian garlic flat beans, salad, and french bread. I also helped my middle with his homework. In other words I was able to do my most important job, and that's being a mom! I brought nothing home from school with me so I can take a mental break from all the Common Core research I do (well I will probably spend some time on Pinterest tonight). I had PT conferences last Thursday and they went really really well. I do love my students this year. I have one class that makes me smile every single day (even on the crazy days), because so many of them come in every single day excited and happy and looking forward to my math class and they say hi to me and ask how my day is going. It's crazy, but true and I just love them for that. As busy, and challenging at times, as it's been it has been a good year. I found an amazing resource for some middle school math foldables here. We used two of the foldables in class a few weeks ago and I have to say the kids loved them and they were a great study resource for the quiz we had covering ratios and rates as well as stem-and-leaf plots (with measures of central tendency). Measures of Central Tendency Foldable The back of the foldable with a Stem-and-Leaf Plot added to match what we were doing Inside, following my color scheme LOL! Ratio/Rate/Proportion Foldable I have been really stressing lately about a major shift our instructional delivery method for math at the middle school next year. This afternoon I met with my principal and the director of instruction, two ladies that I admire and greatly respect, and I have to say I am feeling much better about everything. I am really excited for the innovative approach we are going to be taking next year. It will be tons of work, but so exciting and I feel much calmer about the process after spending some time this afternoon chatting with both ladies. I have been finding some amazing CCSS resources for middle school math (with links to take you to other levels), so be sure to check out my Pinterest boards via the link above. Hope you are having a great Monday. It feels good to be wearing my mommy hat for the evening!
The last pages in our ISN before my students took their first big test, after starting the ISN, was on Solving Linear Equation with Variables on Both Sides of the Equal Sign. I wanted to do a foldable that I had seen used in a science class before, it's call the Layered Book. The only thing different is that I don't glue the pages together we just staple them at the top. This foldable gave us a tab for each of the five steps and space to solve the sample problem. To create this I took 3 different colored sheets of paper and cut them in half (profile direction). I had them already pre-grouped for the students so when they came in all they had to do was pick which color combination they liked. We started off titling it, then putting our first step on the tab, along with the sample problem on the distribute tab. We continued until we were finished. We performed each step when we were on that tab. We rewrote the simplified equation on the next tab and performed the next operation. On the right hand side I gave the the students a few sample problems for us to work out together. Then a sheet of problems they had to complete on their own. They taped the page over our worked out problems (like a flap) so that they could still see them and use them as reference as they completed theirs. **Proud Teacher Moment** A day or two later I gave my students their first test on Solving Linear Equations. We went from one-step equations all the way to what you see above. I gave it to them the day before we went on Thanksgiving Break, and I was terrified to grade them in fear they would not do as well as I had hoped. So I waited until Sunday evening before I went to bed to grade them, and I couldn't have been more proud of my kids. The LOWEST grade was an 89%, I almost cried. On Monday when I passed back their tests they were pretty proud of themselves!
