Students are given a set of cards that have either an algebraic expression or a word sentence. They then have to match up the expressions with the word sentences. This is not meant to be a big activity but just a quick one to help kids connect the different forms. You could use this in grade 7, 8 or 9. NOTE: This activity has been updated and a newer version can be found here Gr7 - translate phrases describing simple mathematical relationships into algebraic expressions, using concrete materials Gr8 - translate statements describing mathematical relationships into algebraic expressions and equations MPM1D, MFM1P - As review There are four sets. Print each on a different colour card stock (there is no real reason for this except that if the cards get mixed up it is easier to get them back into their groups) and laminate (if possible) then cut them out. Mix each set up and put each into an envelope Because there are only four sets, you will have to make up multiple sets depending on how big your class is. Put students into pairs or triads Give each group one set of cards Students are to match up the word sentence with the algebraic expression If time permits, have groups trade sets for a different colour. Number Sentences (doc) (pdf) Did you use this activity? Do you have a way to make it better? If so tell us in the comment section. Thanks

Take one part geometry, one part riddle, and one part partner work and what do you have? A little gem of an activity. We have entered into our Geometry unit and started looking at angles and their measurements. I wanted to give the kids some hands-on use of the protractors, but also some fun. So, I came up with this little activity that the kid really, really loved. First, we talked about angles and their measurements. Using their math notebooks, we created a few samples and had a little hands on exploration with actual protractors. Then, once that was done, for a little extra practice, I gave the kids this little printable (ok, worksheet...but printable sounds so much better, doesn't it??) with a whole bunch of protractors on it. I wanted the students to really think about what they were doing so for each angle I asked them to list the following: 1. What type of angle is it? acute or obtuse 2. Knowing the angle type, will it be greater or less than 90 degrees? 3. Next, looking at the protractor, what are the two angle degrees that it could be (based on where the arrow is pointing) 4. Choose the correct angle degree and circle it. The kids did this for every.single.problem. Tedious? Yes. Time consuming? Yes. Get the most out of the printable so the kids are able to justify why they are choosing the angle measurement? YES. I had them work in partners on this, which made the assignment seem extra fun. Then, they solved the riddle and, viola, protractor practice complete. Click here to get the printable to use in your own room. What are some things you have done to get your kid interested in math AND practicing the skill at hand?
This is a Slope Race Partner Activity . This activity will give your students practice with finding slope and it requires them to use their expressive and receptive language skills to share information with a partner. There are 4 problems for students to complete. Step One : Break your class up into pairs. (I like to partner students who have more mastery over slope with students who are struggling.) Hand out blank race packets to the students and explain to them that they will need to work as a team to win the race. Step Two : Once the first team finishes, check their answers but encourage the other teams to keep going for 2nd and 3rd place. You could also vary this activity by setting a timer and having students race against the clock. The first team that finishes with correct answers before the time ends are the winners. This makes a great review activity at the end of the math unit. An answer key is included. I hope you enjoy! This set contains 4 weeks of morning work for the month of December. The math is aligned to 6th Grade Common Core Standards and meant to be a review. Each week follows the same routine and structure. Mathematician Monday- Multiplication & Division, Whole Numbers & Decimals, Expressions & Equations, Problem-Solving, Ratios & Rates Number System Tuesday: Whole Numbers & Decimals, Rational Numbers, Statistics & Probability Wordless Wednesday: No Word Problems! Students have 3 problems without words. Multiplication & Division, Expressions & Equations, Throwback Thursday: Relationships Between Variables, Geometry, Graphs, Coordinate Planes, Units of Measure Fraction Friday: Nothing says Fun Friday like Fractions! Fractions, Percent I created this resource in my own classroom because I saw a need to continuously review these key areas. By following this same structure each week, students know what to expect while they are also building their confidence in these essential math areas. I have also found several other benefits from this morning work routine: 1)Routine!-My students knew exactly what to do when they come in the classroom. Also, if I needed a few extra minutes due to meetings or other housekeeping duties, I knew my students were spending that time working on essential math skills, not just “busy work.” The morning work is meant to be short and sweet, skill practice, plus engaging. 2)Short & Sweet- There are only a few problems so it shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes. This will also let you know if students are still having difficulty with a certain skill. 3)Fewer Copies- Only one sheet of paper for the whole week! (Copy front and back) 4)A Weekly Grade-My students know this and do not want to do the work for homework or have a poor grade. This helped get them started right away in the morning. I also go over the problems each morning and allowed students to fix their work before turning it in. In my opinion, this is beneficial because it keeps the students engaged as we go over it, ESPECIALLY if they had difficulty with it. This was also beneficial for students because if they paid attention and “added on to their thinking,” they can earn a good grade that will be added weekly. For students that already struggle, this is confidence building and motivating. Digital The Math Daily Review comes as a printable pdf and in a digital format. The digital format includes Google Slides and self-grading Google Forms. The links for both of these are on a separate Google Slides: The Google Slides are organized into a weekly presentation. Each day is on one slide. Some teachers like to separate out the slides to share them on a daily basis. You are able to do this if you don't want to give students a whole week at a time. Google Forms: With the Google Forms, each day has its own Google Form.🛑 Are you a member of the TLL Membership? These materials are already included.
