Rhinoplasty patient (CP 1696), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: A patient prior to a rhinoplasty. This 21-year-old man lost his nose from a lupoid ulcer as a result of being hit by a club. To repair the nose, doctors severed the patient's left middle finger, removing the fingernail, and inserted it into an incision in his upper nasal cavity to form a new nasal bridge. Part of the finger was then reshaped to form the nasal bones, all of which was covered by a flap of skin for uniform appearance. Surgery by Dr. E. George Washington, the first President of the United States, was initiated into Freemasonry in the Fredericksburg Lodge in Virgina, 1752 (age 20). Mr. George Washington was an active Freemason, and was even nominated for Grand Master of the Independent Grand Lodge but he declined. It is speculated that Freemasonry played a critical role in the defeat of the British army as he was known to have never willingly given independent command to officers who were not Freemasons.
