Project: Modeling quorum sensing cycles in Pseudomonas aeruginosa using longitudinal approaches by measuring gene expression Maryam shares the source of her interest: For years, I have been interested in the intersection between microbiology and computer science. Quorum sensing has been my main topic of research as I have always found the communication between bacteria and the potential anti-bacterial drugs that can arise from it fascinating. My interest in quorum sensing (QS) started at middle school. When I heard that bacteria could communicate, I became curious, and read more about it. I found out that a certain type of bacteria that lives in the sea lights up as an expression of QS. Not only that, but this bacteria lives in a symbiotic relationship inside squids, providing light for the organism as it lives deep down in the darkness of the ocean. I then decided to order this bacterium for my first science fair project during middle school. After culturing the bacteria, it began to illuminate more intensely as more cells became abundant in the media. In fact, bacteria can sense that they are a lot in the media and that triggers an expression in QS, which was illumination in that case. This type of bacteria lights up so intensely that you can see green light emitted from the test tube. It was exciting and intriguing to see that vivid expression of QS. Since then, I have been interested in studying quorum sensing more rigorously, especially that for pathogenic bacteria, where QS is used as a mechanism for bacteria to turn into disease-causing organisms. #DVSF #MeettheMedalist #DVSFairs
