It’s hard to imagine that Tandy is two. On one hand, it seems like she’s been with us so much longer, but on the other hand, she doesn’t seem like she should be out of the baby stage. It was so much fun to celebrate her along with something she loves so much. Mary Poppins filled our thoughts and imagination for the day, and it was quite a jolly holiday. You’ve seen the outfits and the invitations, now here’s the rest. If you haven’t watched the movie in a while, you might miss some of the tie ins, but I assure you everything was inspired by the Mary Poppins movie. We started with a couple crafts. The kite decorating kits set up in a carpet bag came from Oriental Trading Company. We also made bird feeders similar to this tutorial. A carpet bag center piece was a must. Thankfully a friend of a friend had one we could borrow. It’s filled with a few items Mary pulled from her bag of tricks. The snacks included peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut with a penguin sandwich cutter, penguin crackers (Walmart), umbrella cheese, popcorn, and lemonade. I used some of the painted cocktail umbrellas to make the number 2. The umbrella cheese is made from Babybel cheese rounds cut in half. I trimmed some black straws from Ikea to make the handles. The Ikea cart I’ve been using in my sewing room made the perfect paper goods station. The lower shelves housed musical instruments and vintage Mary Poppins books. Finally, we’ve arrived at the sweets table! I made the banner from copied book pages from our vintage Mary Poppins books. We had dipped marshmallow chimney sweeps. The Jell-O clouds were blue Jell-O topped with a homemade marshmallow dollop. I’ll have more on those in a future post. Can we pause for a moment and imagine those cute cups above adorned with one of the cocktail umbrellas like the photo below. Yep, somehow those got missed. Thanks for using your imagination instead! Well, it wouldn’t be a Mary Poppins party without a nod to the spoon full of sugar that makes the medicine go down. I bought these cute sundae spoons at Joann’s on clearance. I’ll try to do a quick post on the cake pop spoons in the future too. I added some washi tape accents to my cupcake tower and topped it with the same image I used for the invitations. My favorite lemon cupcakes were a hit with both kids and adults. The final table was home to the favors. The sugar cookie garland spelled out Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I used this letterpress cookie cutter set to make all 34 letters. Chocolate “tuppence”, bird whistles, and sidewalk chalk rounded out the favors. There’s the birthday girl eyeing the gummy penguins her grandmother scored at Trader Joe’s. Big Sis was ready to lead the musical parade. The older kids had a blast making their music while leading the younger guest around. All in all, it was a very happy day! Love this sweet photo of Tandy captured by Matt Bateman. Pinterest, of course, provided tons of inspiration, so check out some of the ideas I found and more here.

Mary Poppins Returns is coming soon so we've gathered some ideas for a Mary Poppins Party! From decor, to food and favors here's inspiration for your party!
Bean's girlfriend turned 16 yesterday. He came to me a few weeks back with the idea of having a surprise birthday party for her. Well, you know me... I like a good party. She's into a lot of geeky things like we are: Harry Potter, Doctor Who, The Hunger Games, etc, etc... However, one thing that she loves is a little different. It's Mary Poppins. She loves Mary Poppins so much that she even changed her name in Bean's cell phone contacts to just that. Now every time she texts him "Mary Poppins" pops up on screen. So, the idea of a Mary Poppins idea came to mind. I thought it would be unique and fun, and undeniably her. I set to work and ended up what I think turned out to be a fun little party. I just invited my nieces & my niece's boyfriend, all of which are the Girl's friends. And.. myself, of course. I started, of course, with the idea of a Spoonful of Sugar. This was super easy, just white chocolate sprinkled with regular white sugar. I added a little tag. Easy peasy. I also found some cherries in the craft section, I thought they'd be super fun. Just a little souvenir. I made labels for soda in glass bottles. Mary POPpins. Around these parts, we call it pop, however, it would be just as cute if it said Mary soda POPpins. To make these, I simply measured the bottle, then created them in photoshop. I printed them out, glued them on a blue cardstock and taped them to the bottles. You can see the placecards I made as well. They simply said ______'s Mary 16th Birthday. I found the graphic of Mary on the internet. I believe it's from the Broadway show. This was not for profit. Don't sue me, please. I threw some candy necklaces on the place settings as well. Not sure why, they just seemed Mary to me. I popped up some Mary Poppinscorn. flowers, whirlagigs, and books for the table. Square marshmallows on skewers, dipped in chocolate and then topped with cookies and cream sprinkles for Chimney Sweeps We had a "proper British tea", of course! I had several selections of British tea for them to choose from. At one point in the movie, they laugh so hard that they have tea on the ceiling. My friend Joyce reminded me of this. Bean found a bunch of silly jokes on the internet that he printed and cut. While waiting for the food to be ready, we passed the cup around and all drew jokes and read them aloud. and here's the cake! It was just a 6" cake, 3 layers. White with maple buttercream. I topped it with a banner I printed out which read "practically perfect in every way". I glued the banner to 2 stripey straws. The best decoration on the cake was not that, or the sugar pearls, or the sanding sugar, or the little flower cupcake toppers, it was the Funko Pop Mary Poppins I bought. I LOVE Funko Pop. I only own 6 at this time (The Avengers, Dumbo, and The Little Mermaid), but my wish list for them is about 300 miles long. They are sooooo cute. Even though I'm not a huge Mary Poppins fan, I really wanted to keep her. I didn't though. I gave her to the birthday girl. Most reluctantly. Here's the whole table. I know most American's probably don't, but Bean has flags from different countries/eras in his room. He's got around 7 of them. 2 are even the curtains. He happens to have the British Union flag, so, that was perfect to use. I also purchased a hardback copy of the Mary Poppins book. We all wrote in it as a guest book from the event. After we told jokes, ate, had cake, and watched present opening, we simply went and watched the movie (while eating the Mary Poppinscorn). That was it, but it was super cute, a lot of fun, and the Girl LOVED it. She was so surprised! We lured her here, dressed up as Mary Poppins on the pretense that I was doing a themed photoshoot of her as Mary & Bean as Bert. ....And so... I did. She looked AMAZING! She and her mom did the best job finding the outfit at thrift shops. A little vintage Mary Poppins action on this one :) So, there you have it. Another party. Yes, I know I've posted a lot of them lately, I'm a partying fool. Too much party? NEVAH! Tina

"In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and SNAP, the job's a game!" The job truly was a game, throwing this Mary Poppins party for my little girl. She has fallen head over heals for "Poppy" over the past few months, and it was so fun to surprise her with all her favorite characters. I can not believe she actually wore her whole outfit! That hat is an Easter hat from the Dollar Store that I spray painted black and added daises and cherries to, and the scarf is crocheted. I found the top, skirt, and shoes at the thrift store. The umbrella was from Amazon, and the "carpet bag" is actually one of my grandma's purses! Somewhere just after "Super-" you realize this word is 34 letters long... Also, we fit that hat stand in my Pontiac Grand Prix. ; ) I made these simple cupcake wrappers using this pattern. So easy, and it really finished them off. Never setting naked cupcakes out again! Notice the "tuppence", Jane and Michael's picture, and snowglobe I made with just a picture of St. Paul's Cathedral! Babybel Cheese Umbrellas! These are becoming one of my favorites. You just pull the center tab off of the wax as normal and cut them in half. Then you cut bendy straws off right after the ridges, and stick them in the cheese. I make these the day ahead of time and just keep them sealed well in the fridge. If you ever need an old-fashioned medicine bottle, just pick up a teeny bottle of Jager. ; ) The Spoonful of Sugars were Pink Velvet cakeballs dipped in white chocolate. The secret is to dip the chilled cakeballs in a little bit of the melted chocolate and stick them to the spoons. Once that's hardened it's much easier to dip the whole spoon in the chocolate without the cakeball falling off. These were actual mini caramel apples! I used a melon baller to scoop out the apples. After tossing them in lemon juice I squeezed each apple-ball multiple times with paper towels to make sure they were as dry as possible. Then I used Wilton's Salted Caramel Candy Melts (which must've been some sort of limited edition, cause I can't find them anywhere online) to dip them just like cakeballs. From the sound of the chatter on Pinterest, dipping them in traditional caramel doesn't work, so the candy melts were my solution. They turned out great! The penguin waiter scene is one of Jaina's favorite parts, so I dressed up this little guy with some felt to serve the food. Also, over the penguin's shoulder you can just barely see the Mary Poppins outline I drew on the mirror with a whiteboard marker. "Cheeky." ; ) There's one key piece missing from the dessert table, and that's the awesome vintage wallpaper backdrop that I spent hours on. If I had known I wouldn't have my backdrop I would've used a lot more color in the linens. The wallpaper was mounted onto a three-paneled piece of cardboard, and the strong winds that day just turned it into a sail. It would've knocked the entire table over if I had left it. So that bummed me out for about two seconds, but I got over it. If anyone wants to rent a backdrop or photo booth for a Victorian tea party, let me know! I'm pretty proud of this chalkboard. I have horrible handwriting and am not very good at drawing, so this is a big win for me. And those are carnations like the one Mr. Banks and all the rest of the men at the bank wear in their lapels. (Extra points for anyone who can tell me the name of the bank in the movie without looking up the lyrics. I have listened to the soundtrack - quite literally - hundreds of times, and I still can not tell what they're saying.) The Chimney Sweep Brushes were Rice Krispy Treats dipped in chocolate! I thought it would be fun to have real roasted chestnuts at the party. Turns out no one else remembered Bert saying this line, not even Zach. I guess that's what happens when you've seen the movie 15 odd times. That's what Jane, Michael, and Mary Poppins say after they each take their medicine. The drinks were really limeade, pink lemonade, and iced tea. ; ) Lemonade is one of her favorite treats. Or, "Sowry!", as she calls it. (sour) She looooves her Daddy. The favors were mini chalkboards and chalk in "carpetbags" that I sewed up. The line on the card is what Bert says before they jump in the chalk picture. This horse has been at my grandma's house for ages. It's gone through children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren! Thank you so much to everyone who came and helped out! Jaina had a wonderful day. Especially once she kicked her shoes off and found some sticks. ; ) Two years old is gonna be a lot of fun!
