"In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and SNAP, the job's a game!" The job truly was a game, throwing this Mary Poppins party for my little girl. She has fallen head over heals for "Poppy" over the past few months, and it was so fun to surprise her with all her favorite characters. I can not believe she actually wore her whole outfit! That hat is an Easter hat from the Dollar Store that I spray painted black and added daises and cherries to, and the scarf is crocheted. I found the top, skirt, and shoes at the thrift store. The umbrella was from Amazon, and the "carpet bag" is actually one of my grandma's purses! Somewhere just after "Super-" you realize this word is 34 letters long... Also, we fit that hat stand in my Pontiac Grand Prix. ; ) I made these simple cupcake wrappers using this pattern. So easy, and it really finished them off. Never setting naked cupcakes out again! Notice the "tuppence", Jane and Michael's picture, and snowglobe I made with just a picture of St. Paul's Cathedral! Babybel Cheese Umbrellas! These are becoming one of my favorites. You just pull the center tab off of the wax as normal and cut them in half. Then you cut bendy straws off right after the ridges, and stick them in the cheese. I make these the day ahead of time and just keep them sealed well in the fridge. If you ever need an old-fashioned medicine bottle, just pick up a teeny bottle of Jager. ; ) The Spoonful of Sugars were Pink Velvet cakeballs dipped in white chocolate. The secret is to dip the chilled cakeballs in a little bit of the melted chocolate and stick them to the spoons. Once that's hardened it's much easier to dip the whole spoon in the chocolate without the cakeball falling off. These were actual mini caramel apples! I used a melon baller to scoop out the apples. After tossing them in lemon juice I squeezed each apple-ball multiple times with paper towels to make sure they were as dry as possible. Then I used Wilton's Salted Caramel Candy Melts (which must've been some sort of limited edition, cause I can't find them anywhere online) to dip them just like cakeballs. From the sound of the chatter on Pinterest, dipping them in traditional caramel doesn't work, so the candy melts were my solution. They turned out great! The penguin waiter scene is one of Jaina's favorite parts, so I dressed up this little guy with some felt to serve the food. Also, over the penguin's shoulder you can just barely see the Mary Poppins outline I drew on the mirror with a whiteboard marker. "Cheeky." ; ) There's one key piece missing from the dessert table, and that's the awesome vintage wallpaper backdrop that I spent hours on. If I had known I wouldn't have my backdrop I would've used a lot more color in the linens. The wallpaper was mounted onto a three-paneled piece of cardboard, and the strong winds that day just turned it into a sail. It would've knocked the entire table over if I had left it. So that bummed me out for about two seconds, but I got over it. If anyone wants to rent a backdrop or photo booth for a Victorian tea party, let me know! I'm pretty proud of this chalkboard. I have horrible handwriting and am not very good at drawing, so this is a big win for me. And those are carnations like the one Mr. Banks and all the rest of the men at the bank wear in their lapels. (Extra points for anyone who can tell me the name of the bank in the movie without looking up the lyrics. I have listened to the soundtrack - quite literally - hundreds of times, and I still can not tell what they're saying.) The Chimney Sweep Brushes were Rice Krispy Treats dipped in chocolate! I thought it would be fun to have real roasted chestnuts at the party. Turns out no one else remembered Bert saying this line, not even Zach. I guess that's what happens when you've seen the movie 15 odd times. That's what Jane, Michael, and Mary Poppins say after they each take their medicine. The drinks were really limeade, pink lemonade, and iced tea. ; ) Lemonade is one of her favorite treats. Or, "Sowry!", as she calls it. (sour) She looooves her Daddy. The favors were mini chalkboards and chalk in "carpetbags" that I sewed up. The line on the card is what Bert says before they jump in the chalk picture. This horse has been at my grandma's house for ages. It's gone through children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren! Thank you so much to everyone who came and helped out! Jaina had a wonderful day. Especially once she kicked her shoes off and found some sticks. ; ) Two years old is gonna be a lot of fun! Yee-Haw! Claire's 3rd Birthday Party was this past weekend and it was so much fun! Earlier this year, I decided I would do a Vintage Cowgirl theme. I have been planning this party in my head ever since (Yes, I am crazy) Here is the invite that I made: {Available in my Etsy shop} The girls got these adorable hats at the Fair earlier this summer which sealed the deal for the Cowgirl theme. Kate's shirt from here. Claire's tank ruffle tank top is from here. {Thank you to my friend Heather who made the bunting & sign} I found a local Farm that rents ponies for Birthday Parties for a really good price, so we had 2 ponies at the party! I had the ponies come for the first hour of the party. The ponies were a big hit! But, the gray pony was a spaz. Yikes! While the kids waited for their pony rides, I had my babysitter Torrey set up in the front yard doing face painting and making Balloon Animals for the kids. I am so glad the kids had something to do while they waited. Thanks, Torrey! Food & Drinks: One of my favorite parts about throwing parties is planning the food & drinks and fitting them into the theme. Appetizers: Close up of vintage prints. I made the PW's Jalapeno Poppers: On the Ranch Veggies & Dip: Corn Dip: Trail Mix: Drinks: (aka: The Watering Hole) Sweet Tea & Pink Lemonade in Mason Jars: Root Beer, Vanilla Creme Soda & Orange Creme Soda: Beer: Main Course: The food table all set up: The bunting was made from vintage sheets: When figuring out the meal, I knew I needed to make something was easy to serve to 70+ people & kid friendly. I went with Pulled Pork Sandwiches & Hot Dogs. Side Dishes were: Cowgirl Coleslaw & homemade Baked Beans Potato Salad & Cowboy Salad (recipe coming soon!) Watermelon & Buns: I had pie tins for the plates. It was the perfect meal for a Cowgirl Party! I set up tables & used hay bales for seating. Although the hay bales were adorable, I won't use them again. We rented them from a local Hay & Grain shop for $2, but they were such a pain to move & so heavy! And, there is still hay all over my yard & house. (Sorry, Kevin!) Dessert Table: Ahh, the dessert table. One of my favorite parts of a party! (aka: The Sweet Saloon) For the back drop, I made a photo bunting of the photo shoot I did with Claire a few weeks ago: I used twine, pom poms & clothes pins. For desserts, I made cupcakes. Funfetti and also Cookie Dough. I made toppers to match the theme. I also made "Cow Patties" (brownie covered oreos) My friend Heather made these cute Pink Lemonade Pony cookies. I also made S'mores Pops to keep up with the Cowgirl theme: The S'mores Pops were easy to make & so good! Of course, one of our parties isn't complete without one of my Mother in Law's amazing cakes! Also hanging in the kitchen by the dessert table was this bunting: Activities Crafin' Corral: I had a table set up outside with crayons & cowboy/cowgirl coloring sheets & a magnetic drawing game. On the fence behind the Crafin' Corral, I made a Wanted sign. I made the Wanted sign in Photoshop & then had it printed at Costco. (the size was 20x30) This poster was one of my favorite things I made for the party! My friend Heather also let me borrow her Corn Hole game that she made: I also set up a Photo Booth for the party: I had some fun little props to make the photo booth more interesting. The kids really got into the photo booth! Wendy, me, Heather & Heather: Love this completely un-posed shot: The 4 C's: Favors: All of the favors could be found in Claire's Country Store! I had hats & bandannas for each kid: {Hats & Bandannas were purchased from Oriental Trading} I had baskets of candy & bags for kids (& adults!) to fill up with candy! I made stickers for the bags that said, "Hope y'all had fun" The candy was a variety of good old fashioned candy! No Cowgirl Party is complete without Bakerella's Cowgirl Cookie Mix in a jar. I used vintage fabric & twine for the top. Scenes from the Party: Thank you to my friend Becky for emailing me pictures that she took at the party! A handful of the photos in the post are from her! And, thank you to my friend Heather who let me borrow buntings, burlap, misc decorations & who made the wooden signs! Thanks to my friend Becky for snapping some of these photos! It was such a fun party and a great way to celebrate Claire turning 3! Can't believe my baby is THREE!

Here's my son's second birthday cake... a TURTLE! He was crazy about turtles at the time, so this one was a hit. I baked the body/shell in a round pyrex bowl. (I think it took one cake recipe for the body and another for all the parts). The head was baked in a large muffin cup and the feet in regualr muffin cups. I cut the bottom of each cupcake at an angle so they would tilt how I wanted. I frosted the whole cake light green, then added the dark green with a star tip. (oh, and peanutbutter M&Ms for eyes) Then I couldn't waist the rest of the batter, so I made coordinating cupcakes. here's where we link
