Today I finished a new math measurement center. Yipee! I love that sense of completion. I was just as happy when I finished cleaning our pantry as I am finishing a lesson. I love being able to cross off something on my "to do" list. I guess I was in a summer-y mood when I made these lessons because it is ocean-themed. The theme probably had to do with me listening to California Dreaming while I was creating the lessons. It's a little ironic for me to listen to this song since I've lived in California the past two years. With this new center, students will practice their measurement skills by measuring different sea creatures to the nearest half inch. There are 12 creatures to measure. There are 2 sets of creatures. One set has a black line drawn on the creatures so your beginning math students know where to measure. The second set is the same creatures, but it doesn't have black lines. You can easily differentiate this center by copying the creatures on different colored paper. Let your students know which color cards they need to measure. One set of cards have cards without lines and the other set has cards with lines. You could even copy the answer sheet on different colors. You could one group of students measure to the nearest inch and the other group measure to the nearest half centimeter. Each measurement card has a number to make it easier for the students to see where they record their answer on this sheet. Hello friends! I am linking up with Collaboration Cuties for their Math "Must Read Mentor Text" Linky Party. The challenge is, which book? There are so many to choose from. I love linking literature to math, especially when it helps children think about a concept in a different way. One of the best examples of this is "How Big is a Foot?" by Rolf Myller. We start our customary measurement unit with Shel Silverstein's poem, "One Inch Tall". One Inch Tall by Shel Silverstein If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school. The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool. A crumb of cake would be a feast And last you seven days at least, A flea would be a frightening beast If you were one inch tall. If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door, And it would take about a month to get down to the store. A bit of fluff would be your bed, You'd swing upon a spider's thread, And wear a thimble on your head If you were one inch tall. You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum. You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb. You'd run from people's feet in fright, To move a pen would take all night, (This poem took fourteen years to write-- 'Cause I'm just one inch tall). We have a great time brainstorming what life would be like if we were one inch tall. Then, on a square inch piece of paper, the students draw a head-to-toe self portrait. Then, they draw a scene of what they could do if they were one inch tall. So fun! Next we read "How Big is a Foot?" The question is a good one. And the story tries to answer the question, but the answer is not perfectly clear. It depends upon answers to other questions like "How big is the bed?", "How big is the King's foot?", and "How big is the foot of a small apprentice carpenter?" The story really makes you think about how to solve this problem. And it naturally leads you to conclude how important it was to standardize measurement. We then take our shoes off and trace our feet on construction paper. The students decorate their feet. I randomly choose one foot and we map out the Queen's bed with masking tape. Pretending to be the Queen, with my crown, I attempt to lie in the bed. Of course I don't fit! Next we measure how many feet it would take to make the Queen (me!) a bed. The final part of the lesson is gluing each foot onto construction paper and drawing a straight line to represent a standard foot. They measure their "foot" and label it's length. For example: Avery's foot = 6 inches. To take it a step further, you could graph the foot lengths of all the students in your class! I love this lesson! I hope you will to!

I made up Lego Geometry to get my nephew excited about area and perimeter. Kids can create big areas by putting legos side by side, or find the area of single bricks. Tell kids not to stress if bricks don't fit perfectly on the grid paper. They can round up. Have them color the area of each of their legos on their grid paper. (Note: For younger kids, you can have them count the lego studs / dots on top to find area and perimeter).
The journal prompts contain spring related items such as flowers, bugs, kites, Easter baskets, pots of gold, men fishing, and children playing. This journal contains 20 days of math prompts. There are two journal prompts on each page. The pages are designed to be copied and cut in half. Twelve of the prompts (6 pages) are related to length and height. This post is dedicated to Mor over at A Teacher's Treasure. Last weekend I watched her video on Interactive Student Notebooks (click on the link to check it out for yourself) ... and I was so inspired I knew I couldn't wait to "kick it up a notch" again in my math journals. This was the piece I was missing in my math journals - and before I watched the video I didn't even realize I was missing something. Her interactive student notebooks are based on the right side and left side pages. The students' right side of the notebooks all contain the same information (direct from the teacher). The left side of the notebook contains the students' thinking, knowledge, and reflection on the lesson. She has a terrific resource packed with over 100 templates for "left side of the page thinking". You can see it by clicking here (and it's even on sale right now!). I couldn't wait until September to start using the ideas in her fabulous resource, so we started using her strategies this week. On Monday we were learning about Order of Operations. I took them outside for a fun order of operations hopscotch, then we used the sidewalk chalk to fill the basketball court with problems and solutions. You can read my post about it here. So of course, we needed a foldable to go along with our new knowledge. I needed it to be quick and easy because I wanted to spend time discussing our new "left side" thinking. So, quick and easy it was. We used sticky notes and arranged them in a hopscotch pattern (to tie in our outside activity). Underneath each sticky note was the word for each step (under the "B" was brackets). I added a little extra information (including our learning goal) for them to copy, and that was that. This is the left side of the journals. Students rewrite the learning goal from the right side of the page (in student-friendly language). Then they write "What I Know". We do this before we do the lesson (it's highlighted in green to show that now we can "go" on with the rest of the lesson). After the lesson they write "What I Learned", "Proof" (where I want them to write a problem and solve it), and then a "Reflection" - this one is completely up to them - they can reflect on and show their learning in ANY way they want. This particular student wrote a mnemonic device for memorizing the steps to order of operations. After our test midweek, we started our next unit. This short unit encompasses angles, triangles, and polygons. We started with angles. I wanted to do a fun, interactive element to our journals, so we made angles using two coloured pieces of construction paper cut into arrows, and attached them to our pages with a brass fastener. I had them glue the bottom arrow to the page, leaving the second arrow free to move into whatever angle needed. We practiced how to measure an angle, then I had them create angles of various degrees. The red colour made it very easy for me to see who had the concept right away, and who needed a little extra assistance. We added a foldable underneath our interactive angle tool. It was a three fold foldable. We wrote the titles of the angles on the outside. Underneath each flap we had a diagram of the angle, a definition, and examples from the classroom. The students really enjoyed finding the different examples in the classroom. The students also completed a "left side" for this activity, too. For the reflection, a lot of my students completed a picture of some sort of picture with the different angles labelled. But one of my favourite reflections was this girl who wrote a little song to remember the different angles. I'm so excited about the evolution of my math journals!!! How many parts make a whole? Cooking measurements were a great way to help my son answer that question. This was a simple activity that he found surprisingly interesting. When it was done, he asked if there was more he could measure! What we used: 4-cup liquid measuring cup Measuring spoons Measuring cups Empty gallon-sized milk jug Tap water Funnel (optional) Worksheet of measuring questions (download the one I made here) Before we got started pouring and measuring, we read Stuart J. Murphy’s Room for Ripley, a Level 3 MathStart Capacity book. In the book, Carlos is super excited to buy his first fish. As he prepares the fish bowl with water, he learns all about just how much water it’ll take to make a nice home for his new guppy. One cup is not enough! 2 cups (or 1 pint) is not enough! As he continues to add more and more water, he learns how many pints are in a quart, and how many quarts are in half gallon, etc. When we finished reading about Carlos’ new pet, I had my son using the measuring spoons, cups, and 2-cup measuring cup to complete a worksheet of math (measuring) questions. This was great fraction practice. I was thrilled to hear his hypothesis that three 1/3-cups would equal 1 cup!
I really wish that I would have taken more pictures throughout our geometry unit. There are so many creative ideas out there to help solidify these concepts for kids. A few of the activities we did included: building various 2D and 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks modeling various types of lines using pretzels (for the lines), M&Ms (for points and to create line segments), and candy corn (to show how the lines go on endlessly) creating foldables to remember different types of angles using the idea from Fabulous Fourth Grade! we also talked about transformations, using gross motor actions, and creating an interactive foldable. and my students' favorite activity: the symmetry activity! This center was pretty simple. Having 4th and 5th graders, it took just a few minutes of reviewing for the students to remember what symmetry is and for them to get the hang of creating a symmetric pattern. Students used their rulers to create the line of symmetry. We also added to a new interactive bulletin board, I will have to post pictures of that soon! Every year we have our first graders create a memory book as a little memory of first grade. This little product has been in our store for a while now, but we've never shared how we use it. We also have a pre-school, kindergarten and second grade version! We've had many emails and questions about how we create a memory book with half sheets, and since it's getting close to that time of year again, we thought we'd fill you in on what we do with a few of the pages that we include in our memory books. I hate it when I have a day off and I can't sleep in. My body is just to used to getting up at 5:00 AM. So here I am blogging and blog stalking when I wish I could be sleeping. Maybe I can't sleep because I'm excited about my new packet. I think it's pretty cool. We've been working on Shapes for the past few weeks and I put together a packet of some of the things we did. This is a great activity for analyzing and composing shapes. My kids LOVE! This is a fun game where the kiddos get to use the skills they discovered on the Cover the Shape mat above. I LOVE this book and was sad to find out that it is out of print. But you can find it on some of the used book sites. I read the book and then my firsties used their imaginations and came up with some cute pages for our class book. This is a picture of our class sort with 3D shapes. On the first page, there is a question about real life objects with each balance scale. Students are to decide the answer by drawing the pictures on each side of the scale to show which would be heavier or lighter. Then students circle the item that is heavier. On the second page, students should be given premade bags of items such as a paper clip, crayon, marker, glue stick, eraser, cotton ball, pencil, and rock. Any items can be used. Students are to choose two items from their bag to test on the balance scale. After testing the two items, they are to record their answers by drawing a picture on each side of the balance scale to show which was heavier or lighter. On the third page, students are given their premade bag of items. After testing the two items they choose and recording the answers by drawing the pictures, then students complete the sentence by writing the name of each item in the correct blank to record their findings. We are keeping busy with Math and our topic of measurement and fractions. We incorporated some literature that made our learning even more fun. We enjoyed the story The Inchworm and then made these cute inchworms. We then went around the room and measured things with our “inchworm rulers” and recorded what we measured. Then we made these really cute “fractionpillars” to learn about fractions. I got this activity from another teacher’s blog (http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com) and she had a freebie for it. Lucky us! They turned out so cute and were a great way to introduce fractions. We then made these caterpillars to show equal parts and how to divide shapes.
