Janusz Stanny (1932-2014) was a Polish graphic artist, draughtsman, and one of the greatest creators of posters, press and book illustrations. In the years 1952-56, he studied at Henryk Tomaszewski’s poster workshop. Stanny dealt with design, book and press graphics, posters, drawings and animated films. At the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts he ran the Illustration and Graphic Design Workshop. In his works, he merged a painter’s view with a sense of humour and sharp lines. He created a characteristic style which is recognisable at first glance. He illustrated fairy tales and literature meant for adults with equal ease. Is it possible to call Janusz Stanny the grandfather of children’s book illustration without sounding like I’m churning out everything that was ever written about him? Because it’s hard to find another way to describe all that he’s done with falling upon a big old cliché and clutching at it with both hands. The Polish graphic designer, poster artist and teacher has illustrated over 200 hundred books in his lifetime, and taught innumerable people at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, all the while creating an unbelievable oeuvre of work which has proved its own timelessness and charm purely through the fact that it still circulates today. And it still looks bloody lovely. © 2018. All images are copyrighted © by Janusz Stanny or assignee.
