Sometimes, you have to look down at your feet to discover small treasures hidden in plain sight. These are some of the beautiful Japanese manhole covers with amazing designs and colors.
Japan is a country full of amazing art. Some of it is housed within museums and galleries while others are right underneath our feet. I’m talking, of course, about Japan’s peculiar obsession with manhole covers. Just about anywhere in the country you can find stylized manhole covers, each more beautiful and intricate than the next. For the past several years photographer S. Morita has traveled around Japan photographing artistic manhole covers. As to why this phenomenon developed, signs point to a high-ranking bureaucrat in the construction ministry who, in 1985, came up with the idea of allowing municipalities to design their own manhole covers. In Japan, form follows function in a recent tradition of creating manhole covers that feature bold and colorful designs.
Sewers of the World by Vernakular is a project that examines the diversity and beauty of the ubiquitous, yet overlooked sewer covers we find all over the world. Vernakular has scoured over 75 cities and 20 different countries (and counting), in search of interesting sewer covers. About The Artwork This mixed-media-on-cast-concrete panel is part of 2017 political portfolio—the most recent in the Urban Panels series. The Urban Panels investigate the most mundane of city vistas—sidewalks—reconsidering the sidewalk panel as a concise, meaning-laden urban sign. The portfolio of cast concrete reliefs injects prescient political satire into the series' postmodern irony, genuine contemplation, and occasional poetry. As we made jokes to keep our spirits up during the 2016 presidential campaign, we realized that it would be apt for the political spirit to directly inform our art. Thus we are currently setting a portfolio of political jokes circa 2017 in concrete and metal¬—the most enduring art materials¬—to up the ante on the current political flimsy. The portfolio’s reliefs subvert historic manhole cover designs from NYC, DC and other urban centers. They feature freehand drawing and scribbling on wet concrete, spay painting and writing with chalk, in addition to an array of visual art tools. “It Will Not Rain On Your Speech” relief borrows language from street sidewalk concrete panels to comment on D.J. Trump’s claims that God made sure that it would not rain his inauguration speech. (It did rain.) Manhole Cover Earrings, Gear Earrings, Iridescent, Faceted Labradorite Briolette Drops, Urban Symbols, Small Silver NYC Manhole Cover Earrings, Mandala Our Manhole Cover Earrings were patterned using metal stamping tools and soldered into a our little gear edge, finished with a drop of wire wrapped luminous Labradorite Briolettes. Inspired by the ubiquitous metallic discs I found so appealing and like urban Mandalas, underfoot in the city streets, particularly NYC, where I did my senior thesis on Manhole Covers as Adornment at Parsons School of Design. Size: These light domes will sit on the lobe, if you choose posts; with our gracefully crafted Ear Wires, they will dangle just below. They are approximately 7/8" long, with posts and large Sterling backs, or you may choose Ear wires. A luminescent, faceted blue flashing Labradorite Briolette will dangle about 1/2 " long. We give our Sterling pieces a natural patina, and hand-brush for a finish that accentuates the intricate details and imparts a satin sheen to the metal, exuding an understated elegance.. Our Sterling is fabricated in metal, from drawings and sketches of observations of the world we are walking in.
