I wonder how many of you remember the large Starflower Mandalas I obsessed over crocheted two years ago? When I started making the first one, it was simply a case of I-have-to-make-this-right-NOW, wit
I work best when I'm (properly caffeinated and) avoiding something else I should be doing. Yesterday, this room was a disaster. Major upheaval going on in here. I've got at least a couple of hours of work left to do in it, so naturally, I'm diving into something I would rather be doing, and avoiding the mess altogether. There's just something about procrastination that gets my creativity crankin'. This is a really rewarding artistic exercise for me, taking tangle patterns I already know and kneading/squishing them into something new. The mission: pick two patterns, adopt at least one element from each, and make a new pattern out of the pieces. Like a lot of things I post on my blog, these tangle patterns were more of an exercise in creativity than relaxation. As far as true Zentangle patterns go, these variations are probably not repetitive enough to get fully submerged in the zen. I dunno... maybe I could still lose myself in them for a while. Or if all else fails, I'm pretty sure I could just lose myself in this room. God knows I haven't seen my desk in weeks. Pardon the randomness of the pattern layouts; this post has been in the making for a looong time. • ❃ • ❋ • ❁ • ✿ • ✽ • ❀ • Tangle remix no. 1: Eylet & Ribbon (Lori Howe) & Crescent Moon (Zentangle) Tangle remix no. 2: Assunta (Zentangle) & Paizel (Angie Vangalis, CZT) Tangle remix no. 3: Huggins (Zentangle) & Hypnotic (Elena Hadzijaneva) Tangle remix no. 4: Afterglo (Carole Ohl, CZT) & Cadent (Zentangle) Tangle remix no. 5: Assunta (Zentangle) & Paradox (Zentangle) Tangle remix no. 6: W2 (Zentangle) & Dansk (Margaret Bremner) Author's note: As much as I love the above remix, it's not technically correct. I love this pattern because it's curvy and flowy, and has natural shading even before the pencil comes along. All of those converging lines naturally darken the parts that would be shaded anyway. Wiiin. The official how-to: Some tips for a perfect Puffle: • Begin and end every inner aura at the same point within each section, down in the 'valley' where all the lines converge. • Sometimes closing the shapes all the way makes that first outline skew a little bit too far in one direction or another. A couple of 'lobes' can always be added to the next section to compensate, as you can see in the examples above. • When you draw that first continuous outline, close the loops as much as possible. The more open that space is, the harder it is to add in the auras so they look right: • As with Cruffle, the step that most determines whether your pattern will look right is the FIRST loop inside the initial outline (shown below in pink). If there is an evenly-spaced gap between the first outline and that first loop all the way around the curve, the rest of the pattern will look fine. Getting that first aura right is like using auto-tune for this tangle (only with less cheating!). Notice that the middles (the last stroke) are not even or perfect, but it doesn't matter because that gap in between the initial outline and the first aura within it are evenly spaced. • ❃ • ❋ • ❁ • ✿ • ✽ • ❀ • Here are my responses to the challenges you left me in the comments: Virginia's was a tough one... ...so I faked it. :oD And here we have Mooka on a stick. This is me reporting live from my couch... sorry this isn't scanned in like it should be. Been sick the last few days, and my camera phone was just so much closer than my scanner. (I'm on antibiotics, and they make me lazy.) Thanks for posting these challenges for me... they were really fun! Here's an updated version of Purk vs. Squid WITH pencil guides... Purk looks infinitely better when you're working within a shape and not just drawing it freeform (like the one above). • ❃ • ❋ • ❁ • ✿ • ✽ • ❀ • come visit me here!

Settle in. This is one of those long posts! Cadent is of one of Zentangle's 'official' tangles. It's simple, elegant and easy when you know the steps. It was designed by Maria Thomas and you can see her steps here, as well as some possible variations. Being basically a simple pattern, it lends itself to massive possibilities! It can be done with straight lines rather than curvy, but I prefer it with curvy lines so that's what I'll focus on here. Most of my examples aren't shaded yet; you should do that. :) I want to start by sharing some of my favorite variations. My left brain realized that they would best be displayed in chart form. And then some #1 A single row of Cadent makes a lovely border. You'll see a few scattered throughout this tutorial. And then some #2 The square parts of Cadent can be filled with many different things for various looks. You may want to add Auras or ribbons to separate the squares. Think of some square grid tangles you like and see if you can adapt them. Here are a dozen ideas to get you started. I've used Cubine, Dex, Tortuca and Yincut, as well as other ideas. And then some #3 If you make the circles larger they can be filled with something. Here are three possibilities. Think of tangles you like that are composed of small circles and try them out. And then some #4 Cadent can be done as triangles too. I find this especially useful if Cadent is along an angled edge. Using triangles, Cadent can be done in the round. Start with a central circle. Draw about six circles around it and connect all the circles using Cadent lines. Then you have to think triangles, add more circles, and keep going. For another method to arrive at almost the same pattern, see my tangle Wildwood. And then some #5 You can do Cadent as rectangles instead of squares. And then some #6 Here are some fancified versions of Cadent for more inspiration. This border uses simple dots instead of circles, and alternates the direction of the 'scrolls' And then some #7 For more ideas, see Patti Meijer's page of Cadent variations here. And then some #8 Finally, I was about to throw out the samples I'd drawn for this post. Two of the large circle ideas and one with border designs caught my eye. Then I thought, "I could make ATCs out of those!" ATCs developed from Cadent variations. The large circle ideas are at the top and the 'border designs' are at the bottom. Well, that should keep us out of mischief for a few days. Have fun! You can see my "and then some" tutorials on other tangles here: Paradox, Knightsbridge, and Munchin.

A zsinórminták általában egyvonalasak, ritkábban több vonalból állnak.

This idea popped into my head one morning: circles with a crescent moon shape on one side and the non-moon shape filled with something and a black background. Since there is already tangle called Crescent Moon (one of my favorites) I mashed the words together and came up with Croon. It's quite a simple tangle pattern with some careful blacking in. I think the variation above has a 'seed pod' look about it. Shading can be added on the inside edge of the non-crescent part. Here's Croon at work. On both tiles I've added a few tiny white circles amongst the "croons". Makes it a bit more outer spacey. It would be fun to mix Croon and Suzanne McNeill's Moon Rocks (scroll down). Tangles: Beadlines, Croon, Keenees, Knase, Not-a-Knot, Paradox, Tipple, Tripoli, Zedbra In the next tile I used both the original Croon and the variation shown in the drawing instructions. Tangles: Black Pearlz, Croon, Knase, Paradox, Screen, Yale

To celebrate Sophie’s Fifth Birthday, Scheepjes and I are hosting a month-long MAL (make-along), starting on the 1st of July 2020. ONLINE SUPPORT International CAL Group Dutch CAL Group Please Join Us There! Sophie’s Universe was a mystery crochet-along hosted in 2015 by Kimberly Slifer and designed by Dedri Uys. The CAL started on the 18th of January 2015 and ran for 20 weeks, with parts being released weekly on a Sunday. Even though the CAL has now finished, the online community around it is still thriving and it is not hard to find a group where someone is making Sophie, either individually or as a group. Sophie’s Universe is much more than just a continuous square blanket; it is a journey of discovery. Although the pattern is advanced, it has been written specifically for adventurous beginners. Each round is explained in detail, with step-by-step photos and hints to help you create your blanket and master the art of crochet. There are also step-by-step videos by Esther Dijkstra from It’s All in a Nutshell. Optional instructions have been provided should you wish to add on to your blanket, either to grow it or to make it rectangular. SIZES The original (Large) was made using Scheepjes Stonewashed XL Worsted Weight Weight Yarn(#4) and a 5mm/5.5mm crochet hook, which should give you a finished blanket size of 1.8m x 1.8m (just over 6’ square). I also made two more sizes/colourways for the CAL: Medium Scheepjes Softfun Double Knit (#3) 3.5mm hook 4mm hook Small Scheepjes Cotton 8 (#2) 2.5mm hook 3mm hook You can find more details like gauge, yarn specifics, more colourways, and sizes HERE.
