I am so thrilled to team up with one of my favorite people - Amy from Raising Arrows! Last week, Amy told me of her wonderful idea for 'Listening Pages.' I immediately knew it was a project I would love to work on. The concept of these Pages is to keep little ones engaged in the church service on Sunday mornings - from singing to the sermon to prayer. I am hosting the pages for children who are not yet reading, utilizing pictures instead of words. You'll also see a space on the side of the Page where your little one
Morning guys! Some of you may know that today marks the end of National Baby-Wearing Week, and I've loved seeing my Instagram flooded with photos of baby-wearin' mamas and papas, also it's been neat to share some of my own as well! I always get so many questions from you guys about which different wraps and slings are my favorites and what I love about them, how I wrap them, etc, so I'm excited about the first ever post featuring the first ever wrap I received which was from Happy Baby! This wrap came in the mail shortly after Lydia was born, and as soon as I looked up how to wrap it (which was surprisingly fast and easy) I tucked my little newborn in it and instantly fell in love. It was so incredibly comfortable! I'd had various baby carriers before with the bulky buckles and the hard straps and suffered through them, so this was a whole new side of baby-wearing that I'd never experienced, and I knew immediately I was hooked. Lydia tucked instantly into my chest and fell asleep, and I loved that I could snuggle her for as long as I wanted with my hands and arms completely free to be productive, or to cradle her anyways which is natural instinct I think:) I very quickly obsessed over my wrap to everyone and started recommending them to every mom I knew.haha The biggest draw for me was that the material was so soft across my back that I couldn't even feel it at all! It really felt like someone else was just holding her against up against me snugly, and I so wished I'd had one of these for the three babies before. Well now that I've gushed for a while I want to move onto another part of this post: Since one of the questions I get asked the most about my wrap is how I actually wrap it, I thought I'd show you a little step-by-step of my favorite way! 1. Start with the Happy! Tag that's in the middle of your wrap, and hold it against your tummy. Adjust the height at this point to how high you want your baby to be on you. 2-3. pull each end up diagonally across your back and over the opposite shoulder. 4. See the X that you're creating on your back. 5-6. Gather both ends that are hanging over your shoulders and tuck them under the tag section. 7. Cris-cross the two ends, and tug them taught in the opposite direction. This is when you want to make sure your wrap is nice and snug! 8-9. Pull both ends around to the back and cross them, bringing them back around to the front again and tying in a double knot wherever you'd like. If you're a smaller gal you may want to wrap around a second time, though after the first it really doesn't make a difference:) And you're ready for your baby! Here's another demo now on actually adding the baby in, but since you can go a few directions once you've done the classic wrapping Miss Lydia is going to help me show you the way we use most often these days: 1. Begin by holding your baby on the opposite shoulder from the strap that's closest to your chest, and pull it directly away from you. 2. Hook your babies appropriate leg through (either facing you or facing front), and spread it across their bum. 3. Do the same thing with the opposite shoulder- 4. - Pulling the strap away from your body and tucking their leg under, not forgetting to spread the piece out across their bum again! 5. Next you're going to pull the tag or label section down and out from in-between you and your baby, 6. and spread it up and over your babies back! Make sure everything is adjusted to how you want it, and you're all good to go! wearing | mama: monogrammed necklace - c/o wrenn jewelry // lace blouse- c/o fancy frills boutique // pants - ross lydia: matching headband and pants c/o notes and knots // shirt - target // moccasins - c/o freshly picked ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now that my girl is nearly a year (!) I wear her on my front or back in the 'hug hold' all the time because she's too big to have her feet tucked up inside like with the 'newborn hold'. That was a sad transition day you can be sure! Also I have to add that without fail, every time we get situated with the wrap, she leans her head on my chest as if to acknowledge the commence of snuggle time.haha Love this girl so much. Well now on to the absolute best part about this post: I'm so happy that the sweet people over at Happy Baby Wrap are offering one of you your very own in the color of your choice! Our home opener is in two days! Being that this is No. 1's Senior season, my football mama BFF's and I are going ALL OUT. We got together for a craft night and made Fatheads (click HERE for a step by step tutorial) and these awesome photo pins! I just love how they turned out! Don't you?! They are perfect for Homecoming, Senior Night, or any time you feel like showing a little (or a lot) of team spirit. Want to make one yourself? Then just keep on reading. I got you covered, Mama! What you'll need: Cardstock Ribbon (you can use as many or as few different colors/patterns as you prefer) Photo Pin backs Letter and numbers (we used glitter HTV, but you could buy stickers or even write them on) Laminating sheets (optional) Hot glue Scissors What you do: Cut your cardstock into circles. You can use decorative edge scissors, if you'd like. Cut out your photo. We used a cup to achieve a perfect circle. Laminate your photo. This is not necessary, however, it will help serve as an extra layer of protection! Cut the photo out and hot glue it to the cardstock. Arrange and cut the ribbons to your liking. Once you've done that, hot glue them together. Hot glue the cardstock onto the front and a pin back onto the back. That's it! You can also take a break (or several!) and enjoy some yummy grazing food and a cocktail if you'd like. YES, PLEASE! Here's how our fatheads turned out. We used the same photo for both these and the pins. They are always so fun to make and even more fun to see in the stands! GO SPARTANS!!! UPDATE- WE WON!!!!! Most of us homeschooling families consider time playing outdoors for "recess" our P.E. class as well. Over the years, we've enrolled the boys in all sorts of sporting activities and considered that to be an appropriate fulfillment of their Physical Education course. Now that our oldest is in 6th grade, however, I'm taking this class a little more seriously. Instead of just focusing on the physical fitness aspect of P.E. class, we're branching out and taking a "total body" approach, and calling it "Health and Fitness" instead of P.E. This concept is connecting well with our semester science study on the human body, which includes nutrition education as well. Whether your kids participate in sports or not, teaching them to take good care of their bodies is an important part of their education. At age of 11, Ben is at a perfect stage in his development to begin lifting weights. Jack Medina is a well-known expert in the area of fitness and nutrition. He has coached Olympic athletes, pro-football players and many more. He recommends that young athletes (starting around age 10) safely begin lifting weights as a way to strengthen their ligaments and tendons. Doing so helps prevent injury, strengthens core muscles and instills a sense of discipline and dedication toward lifelong fitness. The key is to do a high number of repetitions using light weights. This is the workout I developed for Ben using 5 lb. weights and graduating to 8 lb then 10 lb weights (determine weight by the age and strength of the child) He incorporates the program into his school day 3 times per week. (Click here for a printable version.) A FEW KEY TIPS FOR THE STUDENT... 1. Keep good posture, shoulders back, knees slightly bent. 2. Do not swing the weights. Use a slow, controlled motion. 3. Never extend the knees over the toes. 4. Raise weights above head, but do not overextend behind the head. 5. Do not advance to a heavier weight until you have comfortably mastered the lowest weight. Warm Up: 1 minute of Jumping Jacks (or jump rope) 15 arm circles both directions Gentle stretch of quads, hamstrings, calves, shoulders, hip flexors (warrior stretch) Upper Body Circuit: (Do three sets and alternate with lower body circuit.) 10 Bicep Curls 10 Tricep Kickbacks 10 Shoulder Presses (this can be easier with one foot slightly forward and knees slightly bent.) 10 One Arm Rows (each side) 10 Torso Rotations (hold weight at center of chest, twist left/right) Lower Body Circuit: 10 Weighted Squats 10 Calf Raises 10 Forward Lunges (hold weights at sides) 10 Reverse Lunges with a Shoulder Press (Or you can do a torso twist.) Cool Down: Repeat warm-up stretches Drink plenty of water
