Focusing on more recent classical ethnographies, this important study provides a critical introduction to the social anthropology of religion. It covers all the major religious traditions that have been studied concretely by anthropologists--Shamanism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and its relation to African and Melanesian religions and contemporary Neopaganism. Treating religion as a social institution and not simply as an ideology or symbolic system, the book follows the dual heritage of social anthropology in combining an interpretative approach with sociological analysis.

Reverence for the Hindu goddess Lakshmi dates back to the 1st millennium BC. She is known as the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity. Her name is derived from the Sanskrit root laks and laksa, meaning to know, understand, or to have a goal. She is the wife of the Hindu god Vishnu and has many festivals that are celebrated in her honor. In the ancient Indic epic, the Ramayana, Lakshmi is said to have miraculously sprung from the foam of an ocean of milk churned by the gods. Lakshmi is often pictured in her iconography holding the lotus. This is symbolic of the fact that great beauty arises from the dark, richness of the earth under any circumstances. All that’s needed is the auspicious or divine timing for the lotus to come into bloom. Her essence then is about understanding the goal in life: to realize the abundance of the soul. *** This listing is for one full-color quality poster print in your choice of size, printed on heavy matte stock. Galdrahús’ scanned and 'cleaned' version of The Book of Forbidden Knowledge, that contains a list of superstitions, auspicious days, spells, talismans, omens, and folk remedies and more. It's originally part of a series of other "learning books" in some completely different categories, and therefore it may lack some depth. Nor is it a very long grimoire (32 pages), but the lenght might even be an advantage. The Grimoire is a brief and easy-to-understand guide in some of the many topics within occultism, spells, omens and more, and its descriptions of the content makes it easy to understand for most people. Are you into the deep and heavy books, and do you already know Latin, Gaelic and Old Norse, then there are books that are more rewarding for you to read then this. But do you need some good advice, a little everyday inspiration and maybe a place to start if you are new in this part of the world and spirit? Then this Grimoire is great to read. The original book was published in the 1950's. Remember: this book is a download.
