The Porto Santo landscape is enlivened by traditional windmills scattered here and there. Because of its considerable flatness, the island is exposed to very strong winds. The windmills were built to grind cereals for bread. The first one was built in 1794. This was the biggest surviving 18th century construction in the island. But in the years following, the island became dotted with picturesque windmills. Some of them are still working. The windmills that remain fall into two main groups: small wooden or tin structures, not much larger than a shed, which survive in anything from a ruinous state through to excellent condition, and a couple of larger stone built tower mills, one of which has been house converted. For both types, the symbol of a cockerel is often to be found at the apex of the roof.

Throughout the Summer, beginning in June up to September the Arraial is the most traditional of Rural and Religious Festivals on Madeira and Porto Santo. The festivals celebrate either the Patron Saint of each parish or the local produce of each area and bring together some of the intrinsic Madeiran Cultural and Culinary aspects. Apart from the religious character of the festivals, it is a rural celebration with the typical decorations made with flowers strung on poles covered in laurel or heather, colourful flags, Folcklore Dancing and Philharmonic bands, stalls selling toys and sweets, the classic 'Espetada' and 'Bolo do Caco', the local 'Poncha' and 'vinho seco' usually mixed with 'Laranjada' along with other traditional delicacies and delights. People come from all over the island and abroad to celebrate the arraias, families gather from near and far, long into the night, with music, dancing, fireworks and plenty of merrymaking!
