Nalbinding is a Scandinavian fabric-making technique which pre-dates knitting. Learn about nalbinding pattern directions, and how to make York and Oslo stitches.
It's All In The Thumbs Nalbinding (also known as needle looping, needle binding, or knotless netting) is a method of creating a stretchy textile using short lengths of yarn and a single-eyed needle. Fabric is formed by looping the yarn around one’s thumb and then through at least two previously created loops, and the previous row,

I made a tube which fits the foot until I reach the middle of the instep. Now I make a row that goes out from the rest of my tube, which is done by not connecting with the tube, but instead going back to the very first step of this how-to. When I made it long enough I connected it to itself and finally back onto the tube. Each time I go around, I decrease at the root and the top of the row sticking out. Nalbinding technique is mostly used for making items either as flat round(ish) pieces or tube-like thingies, but, at least in my opinion, nalbinding technique works pretty nicely also for nalbinding forth and back (or to and fro). In English below each photo. Neulakinnastekniikalla valmistettu huivi, neulottu edestakaisin. A scarf made by nalbinding forth and back. Ms Krista Vajanto's videos were the treasure box where I learnt myself nalbinding in July-August, back in 2009. The beetroot coloured scarf above was one of my first items I finished in August 2009, right after the first mini sized pair of mittens and socks, and two pairs of normal sized socks. At that time I don't think I yet knew that one 'could not' nalbind forth and back, so I just nalbound, and turned at the ends the best I could. Neulakinnastekniikka - edestakaisin neulominen. Nalbinding forth and back (or to and fro). Yllä olevassa kuvassa punainen nuoli osoittaa edellisen kerroksen viimeisen silmukan (mallipala tehty suomeksi 1+1). Meneillään olevaa kerrosta jatketaan, kunnes viimeinen uusi silmukka on kiinnitetty tuohon edellisen kerroksen viimeiseen silmukkaan (punainen nuoli). On the photo above, the red arrow points to the last stitch of the previous row (swatch made in Oslo Stitch UO/UOO F1). Keep nalbinding until you connect the last new stitch into that last stitch of the previous row (red arrow). Then, make two additional stitches, but do not connect them - just like when making a chain of stitches. Turn your work, and connect the next new stitch into the loop which is pointed by the white arrow. Note: The loop pointed by the white arrow, not the last stitch/loop after you have made the two additional stitches. Making the additional stitches is not absolutely necessary, but it makes the turning easier, and it is easier to see/find which loops to pick up. It also might help to keep the stitch count even so that your work won't narrow accidentally. Neulakinnastekniikka - edestakaisin neulottu mallipala. Nalbinding forth and back (or to and fro). No sitten niitä muita tapoja tehdä huivi. There are other ways of making a scarf, too. Neulakinnastekniikka - edestakaisin neulominen, lenkkihapsut huivin päissä. Nalbinding forth and back (or to and fro), looped fringes at the ends. Instead of making just two additional stitches at the end of each row, you could make several additional stitches before turning your work. By that way you will get looped fringes at the ends. I think I saw this system first in Marjut Nordberg's Master's Thesis. I recommend using stitch marks, for example in the fifth and tenth loops at both ends, in order to keep the stitch count even and the ends straight. Alla on seuraava vaihtoehto. Below is the next option. Neulakinnastekniikka - yksi tapa tehdä pitkä suorakaiteen muotoinen huivi, yksittäiset rivit. Nalbinding - one way to make a long rectangular scarf, single rows. Yläkuvassa huivivauva on tehty yksittäisillä silmukkakerroksilla, jotka on päissä jätetty kiinnittämättä edelliseen kerrokseen. Näin saadaan hapsut. Aivan yhtä hyvin hapsut voidaan jättää tekemättä, jolloin silmukat kiinnitetään edelliseen kerrokseen koko matkalla. Edelleen suosittelen silmukkamerkkien käyttöä. On the photo above the tiny 'baby scarf' was made by nalbinding single/individual rows which were left unconnected at each end. By this way you get fringes. If you do not want fringes, simply connect the new stitches to the previous row all the way. Again, I recommend using stitch marks. Neulakinnastekniikalla valmistettu huivi. Jokainen raita on yksittäinen kerros. A scarf made by nalbinding. Each colour stripe is one single row. Neulahuivi - yksittäisin kerroksin. Huivissa käytetty omanilainen pisto kääntyy kierteelle itsestään. A nalbound scarf, single rows. The Omani Stitch tends to curl up. Neulahuivi - yksittäisin kerroksin. Suomeksi 1+1. A nalbound scarf, single rows. Oslo Stitch UO/UOO F1. Alakuvassa malli neliömäiseen tai suorakaiteen muotoiseen kappaleeseen. On the photo below, a way to make a square or rectangular shaped item. Neulakinnastekniikka - neliö. Nalbinding a square. You could make a square or rectangular shaped scarf, or other item, for example like this, by starting from the middle. For a long rectangular you obviously need a long chain of stitches to start with. In this test piece I made five stitches into one loop of the previous row. The number of stitches to add depends on the yarn and the stitch you are using. You could make the increases more evenly, for example 1+3+1 or 2+1+1, I think. It is worth paying attention to the exact place of the corner. On the lower left corner, the orange row, I think I should have made the increases one loop earlier, into the previous loop, so that there would not be the slight curve on the bottom orange row that there is now. Ja vielä kolmiohuivi. One more, a triangle scarf. Neulakinnastekniikka - kolmihuivi. Nalbinding - beginning of a triangular scarf. In the triangular scarf sample above, I made five additional stitches at the end of each row, turned the work, and connected the next new stitch into the third one of those five stitches. How many stitches to add, depends on the yarn and the stitch you are using, and also how steep or gradual angle you want in your triangle scarf or shawl. If you start your triangle scarf at the longest edge, simply make the turn a few stitches before the end/edge, and your scarf or shawl will narrow little by little.

One year, a challenge every month (due by the last day of the Month), and at the end of it, 12 fabulous historical garments. How it works: Every month in 2015 will feature a themed challenge and we’ll each sew (or knit, or crochet, or tatt, or embroider, or whatever it is you call making a hat, or otherwise create) a historical garment or accessory that fits the theme. For the purpose of the Historical Sew Fortnightly, ‘historical’ is WWII era and earlier, so no later than 1945. Because there are only 12 Challenges, Challengers are really encouraged to attempt to participate in every single challenge (though, obviously things do come up, and it’s better to participate in some than none!) Your item can be as basic or elaborate as you want, from a simple fichu to fill in the neckline of a gown, to a full ensemble from the undergarments outward: whatever you need and can can handle time and skill-wise. The HSF should encourage research and historical accuracy, not fantasy or ‘costume’, …
