Pam Penick of Digging hosts Foliage Followup on the day after Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, for garden bloggers to focus on the foliage, rather than the blooms. I'm not showing any foliage from my own garden today. Instead, I'm showing foliage pictures from a garden tour that I took today, in Woodinville, WA -- the 12th Annual Tour of Gardens hosted by the Woodinville Garden Club. Woodinville is home to one of the biggest and most impressive nurseries in western Washington -- Molbak's. Also, the city is a unique winery destination, home to more than half the wineries Northeast of Seattle. In fact, Woodinville is the site of a major wine-tasting event -- the Passport to Woodinville Weekend. Anyway, without further ado, here are my foliage pics from the tour. Many of the plants, especially the conifers, didn't have tags, so I don't know names. I love how on some conifers, the new growth is a different color, almost as good as flowers! I found myself fascinated by this line of trees, all so different. I thought this was one the most beautifully balanced borders in terms of foliage. I thought it was very clever the way the gold foliage repeats in several spots, although none are the same plant. I had to include this chicken topiary. This interesting grass looks like it is made of fiber-optic cable. Stipa tenuissima/Mexican feather grass Golden Hops This Japanese garden made great use of Japanese forest grass. I have quite a few more pictures to share from the tour, of flowers and garden sculptures, but for now this will have to suffice. Check the comments in Pam's blog for links to other great foliage pictures!

Hakonechloa macra (Hakone Grass) is a very beautiful perennial grass forming a cascading mound of gracefully arching, bright, rich-green leaves that ripple in the slightest breeze. Bringing alive any garden area, its soft foliage provides great fall color when it changes to exquisite copper-orange shades and persists into winter. Delicate airy sprays of green flowers appear in mid-late summer but are generally unnoticed among the leaves. Hakonechloa macra is more sun tolerant, drought tolerant, cold-hardy, faster growing, and easier to propagate than 'Aureola'.
Rodgersia is a bold and clump-forming perennial with rhizomatous roots, originating from shaded slopes, moist woodlands, and stream banks in Japan and Korea.
Hakonechloa macra Overview Uses: Cold hardy, perennial ornamental flowering grass. Perfect for containers and gardens! An excellent groundcover! Benefits: A shade tolerant grass! An exceptional grass for container planting! Tolerates air pollution: great for cities! USDA Hardiness Zones: 5 - 9 Sun: Partial shade to shade Life Cycle: Perennial Mature Height: 12" - 18" Mature Width: 12" - 24" Bloom Season: Mid to Late Summer Summary Hakonechloa macra—commonly called Hakone Grass, and Japanese Forest Grass—is a species of perennial ornamental flowering grass that's native to Japan. Hakone Grass does exceptionally well as a container grass! This is especially true in urban environments, as Hakone Grass is known to tolerate poor air quality. Produces flowers in the mid summer through late summer; however, they're considered to be somewhat insignificant and blend in with the foliage. A great ornamental grass for many different locations. Plant groups of them together to create an attractive landscaping groundcover, use in corner beds, as accent pieces, with other perennials, with fencing, or to create borders. Tolerates deer, air pollution, and black walnut. Care Hakone Grass Care Hakonechloa macra is extremely low maintenance and easy to care for. Fertilizations will accelerate growth and keep your plant well fed. We suggest using our slow release fertilizer, or something similar. Water regularly after planting and throughout its first year of establishment, or in periods of drought. This grass is not drought tolerant, and its ideal soil is moist, rich, and well draining. It is not suggested to cut or trim this grass during the growing season. Cut back to 4" above ground level sometime over the course of winter, prior to spring growth. We do not suggest growing this in areas that get too much sun, as leaf burn will likely occur. Conversely, too much shade will likely cause underdeveloped foliage coloration (although it's known to grow in fully shaded areas). Zones 7-9 should not place Hakone Grass in an area that gets strong afternoon sun! Propagation is best achieved via division. Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' is a gold version of the Hakone grass that is a fast grower. Its cascading habit makes it great for the landscape or container. USDA Hardiness Map Plant Form 'All Gold' Japanese Forest Grass or Hakone Grass is a beautiful, compact, golden-yellow variety of the species Hakonechloa macra, that is an excellent ornamental for a shady spot in the garden. Its bright color, adaptability, and cascading habit make it attractive for containers and multiple uses in the landscape. Its name, Hakonechloa, comes from Mt. Hakone in the moist woodlands of central Japan, where it is native. It grows slowly to 12-18 inches in height and width and spreads by underground rhizomes. Its 10-inch slender leaf blades arch gracefully down, forming a dense mound. In spring and summer, it shines its brightest yellow in sun and partial shade but develops a darker, chartreuse color in full shade. All Gold blooms in August and September with spikes of delicate, inconspicuous, yellowish-tan flowers that hide among the leaves. When temperatures drop in the fall, this beautiful grass turns pink and then golden brown in the winter as the leaves die down. All Gold grows best in moist, loose, loamy, well-draining soils. It doesn't do well in dry clay soils or saturated, soggy soils. In the cooler areas of its 5 to 9 hardiness zones, it will grow in full sun with enough moisture or light shade. In the warmer regions, however, it will grow best in the soft morning sun and afternoon shade. Water regularly, especially during periods of dry weather, and add a layer of leaf mulch to keep the soil moist. Cut the dead grass down in the winter or early spring before new shoots emerge. Japanese Forest Grass is attractive in containers as an accent plant on a shady porch, patio, or entranceway. In the garden, it is a good choice for edging and borders along paths and beds, around trees, and cascading down hillsides. It is a perfect addition to a woodland garden, rock garden, Asian garden, or urban garden. All Gold is an excellent companion plant for hydrangeas, azaleas, and rhododendrons that grow well in similar requirements of moist soil and partial shade. Other plants that do well nearby are ferns, hostas, coral bells, and astilbes in the spring and summer, and asters and toad lilies in the fall. In the late winter or early spring, hellebores add a beautiful pop of color close by. In addition to its other qualities, All Gold Japanese Forest Grass is deer-resistant, shade and air pollution-tolerant, and pest and disease-resistant.
