Clothing was hardly a practical necessity in North Africa and what is today the Middle East. Often a luxury item in these warm, humid climates, it became more essential as people's lives improved socially and economically. But even then, the drapery was light and tended to accent the body's shape rather than conceal it. The first part of this profusely illustrated and scrupulously researched text examines the evolution in apparel worn by Egyptian royalty, priests, musicians, manual workers, the military, and foreigners (as depicted by Egyptian artists). Two additional sections consider clothing worn in ancient Mesopotamia and Persia, focusing largely on Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian styles. Over 250 illustrations, drawn in the artistic style of the period, are accompanied by flat patterns showing the cut of the garment, thus enabling today's costumers to accurately reconstruct this apparel. A comprehensive archive that will not only be of immense value to fashion historians and students of costume design, this volume will also fascinate anyone interested in the development of artistic representation. ancient customs; ancient history; apparel and dress; history of clothing; historical societies; egypt; fashion; northern africa; middle east; assyrian; textiles; egyptian royalty; priests; musicians; manual workers; the military; foreigners; traditions; mesopotamia; persia; sumerian; babylonian; practical necessity; art and craft; tailoring; society and economics; status; ancient egypt; mesopotamia; fashion history; Persia; costume

I'll be meeting up with my new grandson, Ian, soon. He is making his debut in Germany, the country of my birth. His long-suffering mother, the MamaDaughter, is impatient to bring him into the world. I will be going to a little town in the woods of the Rhine-Land. How typical is this shot with the church steeple and red roofs. I hear that the down town is walking distance from the apartment so I'll be taking the little munchkins on walks to town. I haven't seen this little sprite for a whole year. She has grown up so much. And this little guy was just 9 months old the last time I gave him a squeeze. I don't look forward to the traveling part but I do want to visit and get to know where the family is living. I have been to Germany once before in 1998. I visited with my aunt, who I had never seen, my cousin, and had many overwhelming experiences. It will take a few hours to get into the German language but I think I will do all right, thanks to my immigrant parents who talked German to me growing up. My mother and father would be amazed that a great-grandson is being born in the Father Land. Life is funny like that.

Three acclaimed novellas by the Arthur C. Clarke-award-winning \"British master of science fiction\" The Future Is Oppression. Scions, sonko, landlords: whatever you call them, they're the super rich, the princes of capitalism, living off the labour - and the deaths - of the swarming masses and all too happy to see the world burn to preserve their luxurious lives. In three critically-acclaimed novellas, the \"British master of science fiction\" (Tor.com) takes you down into the mud and horror of a future battlefield, into the dust and burning heat of a scorched equator, into the grinding poverty of a newly-feudal village, with the folk who give their lives every day in the service of undeserving masters... and sows the seed of revolution. Collecting Tchaikovsky's critically acclaimed novellas Ironclads (2017), Firewalkers (2020) and Ogres (2022) for the first time, Terrible Worlds: Revolutions gives you three glimpses of hope for a better future.
