Antoine Georges Rochegrosse 1859-1938 Lucrèce Borgia, circa 1880 Oil on canvas Signed lower right Canvas: 36 5/8" high x 29 1/8" wide Frame: 50 3/8" high x 40 1/8" wide Georges Rochegrosse was one of the most prestigious painters of his time. Adulated and covered with honors, he was nonetheless an archaeologist. He painted great reconstructions of classical antiquity but also more intimate and sensual paintings. He came from an intellectual and an artistic social standing. Rochegrosse studied at the famous Académie Julian, then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he was twice admited to compete to the Prix de Rome. In 1883, the Prix du Salon allowed him a trip to Italy and then to the various European capitals. His love, Marie Leblond, was throughout his life, his muse and the heroine of his works. She was empress, goddess... The couple spent the winter months at El-Biar, on the heights of Algiers Bay, where the painter often found the oriental decorations of his compositions. He was elected as an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1892 and received the medal of honor in 1906 for The Red Delight. Rochegrosse also illustrated several books. Today, some of the drawings for these illustrations are in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, London. He lived his final years in Algeria, but returned to Paris where he died and buried in Montparnasse Cemetery. His wife, Marie Rochegrosse (née Leblond), had died in 1920.
