A CREATIVITY PROJECT: Luck o' the Irish (Destination: Imagination via Creative Thinking) Luck o' the Irish is a St. Patrick's Day, creative thinking activity that challenges students to collect symbols and superstitions of good and bad luck. This activity provides an easy and valuable home-school connection. It is a wonderful replacement for traditional show and tell in that it gives the students a purpose and focus for their sharing time. Luck o' the Irish is a free sample from Destination: Imagination via Creative Thinking Vol. I. Originally developed to promote fluency and flexibility as 2 of the 4 traits of gifted children (fluency, flexibility, elaboration, and originality), I have used it extensively with heterogeneous classes. The results are always surprising and extraordinary. About Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato “My Irish grandfather, Thomas Lawrence Downey, was a great storyteller. I loved his rendition of The Animal Fair and his explanation of why he was bald ( that will remain a personal secret). I never tired of sitting on his knee—and later, when I was a bit too big, sitting at his feet with one of my baby sisters on his knee—listening to his wonderful tall tales. Among the stories I loved the best were the ones about the Irish—and the Downey family in particular. In those tales, I’m afraid, “dramatic flair” and artistic liberties took over for fact. But as any good storyteller knows, to embellish is to make the tale interesting, especially to a young Tomie. When I read the short tale that inspired Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato , I swear I could hear my grandfather Tom Downey whispering in my ear, “Jamie O’Rourke was the laziest man…”. Now I hope that the next generation, sitting on someone’s knees or at someone’s feet, will hear the words just as I did.” — Tomie dePaola

Craving all the potato-based comfort food this time of year? Let us introduce you to one of the heartiest hybrids on the pub scene: Irish Nachos. Invented in 1980 at J. Gilligan’s Bar and Grill in Arlington, Texas, Irish nachos are the result of some early experiments with the restaurant’s first fryer. While serving up a batch of cottage fries in a skillet, the owner decided to layer the hot potato rounds with nacho toppings like cheese, tomatoes, and jalapeños – and thus a bar food star was born. Forty years later, those humble spuds have earned national fame, and are now begging for a spot next to your favorite stout.
