Sorry I'm late uploading this- I was on the last day of my first half of the sock book deadline and then I had to run a big box of socks to the FedEx office (43 miles away) before the blizzard hits. I totally forgot that it was Thursday. Anyway, this is Lowe's Jan and Fran, Front & Back Dolls and Dresses #2766. It's an interesting set from 1964. You might want to print the whole thing on card stock. There is an odd number of clothes pages because one page was printed on the back cover. The Doll backs were on the inside of the front cover. It'll be tricky to print and glue them together, but maybe if you hold them up to a window, you can line them up properly. In order to put most of the clothes on the dolls, you'll have to cut a slit in the back neckline. You can see where on some of the outfits, but not all of them.

This is a cut set that is incomplete. I only have 2 of the orignal 5 dolls. Little Cousins was produced by Samuel Lowe Publishing company and printed in 1940.
This is the only set I own where one of the dolls is looking over her shoulder at us. All of her clothes are viewed from the back (so she can square dance). The background art is detailed and great fun, and the clothes are quite pretty. I've talked often about reprints, and the fact that paper doll publishers would recycle books, dolls, sets, and clothing- reissuing the same book under several different names, and using several different publisher names (in fact Abbott was a subsidiary of Lowe). I happen to have 2 versions of this book. #968-10 Square Dance is the original book, published in 1950, with 6 pages of clothes. I also own Abbott #1394 Polka Party. Polka Party has the same dolls, arranged differently on the covers, and 4 pages of clothes. The clothes have been *distilled*- much of the detail was elminiated, and the colors reduced. Polka Party was printed on pulp paper rather than heavier white paper. I'm uploading Square Dance, but I've also made a file of Polka Party showing the differences. Betsy and Bill, A Pressed Board Doll, 1943 by Samuel Lowe Company, Kenosha, Wis. Only the Betsy doll is pressed board glued to the top of the book; the Bill doll is a punch-out doll. Great color throughout, with a touch of art nouveau on the cover boarder.

Some show her professional, working girl side, while others show her more casual looks (which aren’t so casual today). This is a wonderful set, though you might want to skip reading the little *handwritten* notes, if you worry about your blood-pressure. It's hard not to do some massing eye-rolling when you think of a teacher being so happy that her students approve of her dress... (not to mention that these were the only careers mentioned...)
I think there must have been another version of this set with more clothes because there is nothing for poor Mary to wear with her two skirts. She does, however, have lots of shoes (none of which look like they'll actually stay on the doll).

I am on a stashbusting mission- there is yarn in every room of my house, except for the bathroom (and some days, there's yarn in there too). I need to use up some of the yarn I already have, before I buy more. To that end, I have been knitting with leftovers (the Hitchcock Sweater), and stuff that I bought but forgot, including these wonderful yarns that I picked up last summer in Portland, at Yarnia. Yarnia is a unique store- it's crammed top to bottom with fine yarns on cones in all colors, sizes and fiber contents. You choose the colors and blends you like, and the folks there will wind them together for you on a cone. The combinations are endless, and the colors are intoxicating, and the yarn is cheap (I don't think either of the above cones cost more than $10, and both have/had enough yarn to knit a pair of socks). This yarn consists of 5 strands of very fine yarn- ice blue, darker blue, green, yellow, and metallic green sparkle (I'm a sucker for The Sparkly). The combined strands look like they're slightly heavier than heavy fingering weight, but they knit up like worsted weight. I used my general worsted weight sock formula (size 5 needles, 48 sts), and a simple texture (K 3 rnds, next rnd: K3, P1 around) to make the sparkle pop. This yarn feels slightly thinner than the green above. It's 3 strands: cream wool, peach wool, green metallic sparkle (as I said, sucker for the sparkles). But it blooms nicely, and I'm knitting it with the same pattern as the green sparkle socks. One caveat about this yarn- it's the definition of *splitty*. It's very easy to lose a strand, especially the metallic one. And no matter how carefully you unwind, one of the strands will eventually end up either being too short or too long. It's not a major problem (either cut the other strands and tie them on again, or cut the long one and do the same), but it does happen at regular intervals (say, every 3" in the knitted fabric). And- I didn't write down the fiber content of these yarn combos, which means that while they might be totally superwash, I can't vouch for it, so the socks will have to be hand washed. Here's another stashbuster- a doll sweater using only leftover sock yarn bits and pieces (and despite the way it looks in the pic- the bottom front edges do line up properly. The buttonholes stretch the ribbing out). (Note to Self: next time, make fewer buttonholes). You wouldn't think so, but one of these sweaters (knit on size 3 needles) takes more yarn, and more time than a sock. But it's oh so cute, and more than worth the time and effort. See- they do line up... (once again, note the sparkle)
I don't want to cast aspersions, but compare the poses of the dolls in this Lowe set (#2778 Dress UP Dolls, 1969) to the ones in last week's...
Because all girls in 1976 aspired to be Geishas, Belly Dancers, or walking Peppermint Sticks.
