Bessie Love (1898 – 1986) was an American actress, born Juanita Horton in Midland, Texas. She attended school in Midland until she was in the eighth grade, when her father moved his family to Arizona, New Mexico, and then to Hollywood. Love achieved prominence mainly in the silent films and early talkies. With a small frame and delicate features, she played innocent young girls, flappers, and wholesome leading ladies. Her performance in The Broadway Melody (1929) earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Let's see her innocent beauty through these vintage portrait photos taken in the 1920s.

Photographs are legacies passed onto future generations. The following are 21 of the most iconic and famous photographers who paved the way for others.
Anders Petersen was eighteen when he traveled from his home in Sweden to Hamburg’s red light district the Reeperbahn. He wanted to escape his upbringing, shed his comfortable bourgeois skin and try on another to see how it felt. His parents had separated when he was young and he had been brought up by his grandmother in the quiet of the countryside amid fields and cherry trees and a darkening border of a forest. It was an idyllic fairytale world, but boring. The Reeperbahn was a chaotic world of excitement, and pleasure, and excess, and danger. He met a green-eyed Finnish woman who worked the main drag. They became lovers and Petersen was introduced to the world of prostitutes, drag queens, drug addicts, drunks, pimps, and thieves. He took courage from his lover, from beer and from amphetamines (Preludin) to finally break free of the rules and manners, the lies and constraints of his bourgeois childhood. He had found himself another family who lived their lives without care, without shame, without judgment or censure. Petersen made friends with these characters who shambled joyously through the night at the local bar like the Café Lehmitz. All too soon it...

Hi teacher friends, Ancient Civilizations has to be my favorite curriculum to teach. I find the ancient world fascinating, with all the different traditions, inventions, rituals, building structures, gods and goddesses. I could probably spend the whole year just focusing on Egypt alone, with its pyramids, their social hierarchy with pharaohs, and interesting

Our original mini 'Ohi'a Lehua blossoms are carved and cast in sterling silver, then heavily dipped in 14karat gold to last and last! 14kgf chains and details make this new necklace a new favorite! Available in 3 lengths: Choker (15-17"), Classic (16-18") and Long (21-23" as photographed on our model). The 'Ohi'a blossom is celebrated on the Island of Hawai'i, home of Pele (goddess of fire and volcanoes), and Hawai'i is the home of the Merrie Monarch Festival each year (the celebration of the Hawaiian Hula and Language). We are excited to have these new mini 'Ohi'a Lehua pieces debut just in time for the annual Merrie Monarch Festival this year! This bracelet is a size S (adjustable 6-7") but can be made slightly larger into a M/L size (adjustable 7-8") by mentioning this size in the comments when checking out. If no size is mentioned, the bracelet you receive will be a size S (6-7") as photographed. The 'Ohi'a Lehua is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and is steeped in the History of Hawaii. According to legend: Pele, the fire goddess, had been smitten by an attractive man named 'Ohi'a, but 'Ohi'a was already in love with a woman named Lehua. Blinded by jealousy, Pele transformed the 'Ohi'a into a gnarled, scaly tree. When asked to undo what she’d done, Pele refused. Lehua sought help from her aumakua (ancestral gods). However, the aumakua instead transformed Lehua into the red blossom of the ohia tree, forever linking the lovers. Picking the tree’s flowers causes rain because the lovers are being separated and the rain represents the two lovers crying.

Unless otherwise noted, these images are circa 1940s. Gustave Roud (20 April 1897, Saint-Légier – 10 November 1976, Moudon), French-speaking Swiss poet and photographer. In 1908, at the age of eleven, he moved, along with his parents and sister, to a farm in Carrouge in the Vaud countryside, inherited from his maternal grandfather; he would spend the rest of his life there. In high school he studied the classics and took classes with the renowned Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet and the Swiss-French writer Edmond Gilliard. He continued his study of the classics at the University of Lausanne, where he obtained his licence ès lettres (equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts). During this time, he translated the poems of Hölderlin, Novalis, and Rilke, while also actively participating in a number of literary journals. Afterwards, while living a solitary life in his family farm at Carrouge, often in frail health, he maintained numerous friendships with artists, poets, and other intellectuals, and was also a mentor to the young Philippe Jaccottet, who would later become one of Switzerland's most accomplished poets. "Autoportrait au bureau", circa 1917. Considered one of the greatest poets of Romandie - the French-speaking part of western Switzerland - Roud's poetry is inspired by and dedicated to the landscapes of the Haut-Jorat. As a poet and as a man, he was in a constant state of wandering while absolutely rooted to the landscapes that he never actually left; "the road, my only country ...", he wrote, but that road was only a series of postponed departures, vague, endangered, fading. "Chemin de campagne avec vue sur Lussery". From the age of sixteen, he was also a passionate photographer; eventually he had his own dark room in which to print his work. His photographs, both black and white and color - numbering somewhere around thirteen thousand - were never exhibited during his lifetime. But they were well known to his associates, with whom he shared prints. And the models, his friends, local farm workers, were happy to pose; he was also something of the village photographer, shooting weddings and parties and award ceremonies. The homo-eroticism of much of his work, so obvious to us now, did not go entirely unnoticed in his lifetime. But the subtext of the images and the sexual nature of the poet - whatever that may have been - was left unexamined; only recently have scholars begun to open that door. Autoportrait en ombre... self-portrait in shadow....
