Aaarghhh!!! dei mostriciattoli dagli occhi verdi e rossi hanno invaso la mia casa!! Aiutooo!!! Aaargh !!! green-eyed monsters invaded my house !! Help!!! Eh ehehe! Si tanti mostriciattoli molto carini hanno invaso casa per Halloween e mi piacciono tanto! Eh eh eh! Many cute little monsters have invaded my house for Halloween and well, I love them! As long as you follow me, you know that I love DIY projects that are easy, quick, to do with kids and low cost: for this reasons the material that I prefer is paper. Last year I had proposed some ideas for 10 minutes Halloween home decor with balloons in shape of ghost and pumpkin; this year I created monsters as Halloween window decorations to be realized with black cardboard and tissue paper. TUTORIAL FOR LIZARD HEAD HERE http://www.elementaryartfun.blogspot.com/2013/05/catching-up-lots-of-fun-stuff.html I have been so busy lately and have hardly had time to blog. Thank you so much for the Versatile blogger awards. I will eventually get some time to reciprocate! I appologise! I really appreciate all my readers and your sweet sweet comments. I have two high maintenence toddlers at home that keep me on my toes! We have been doing so many things in here and I need to catch up and bring my camera this week to update the latest. Here are some things from a few weeks ago… These cubes are so easy to make and you can be so creative with what they put inside. Some kids put an alien inside, some made flowers, animals, tvs, and some made it into a giant robot head Ok this made my day. Today I had a parent tell me that they were on their way to the zoo and saw a painting of Van Gogh outside the art museum and the child said, “Look mommy, it’s Vincent Van Gogh!” It made the two weeks of yellow paint stains on my pants completely worth it!! Shout out to Artolazzi! Jenny Bartolazzi, you are a genius! Your ideas impress me and your posts never disappoint. I am so glad you blog so I can copy you! My kids are so happy with their chameleons because of you. I love the candid picture I caught of a student snuzzling up to her chameleons as though they were made out of velvet and purred like kittens!! You can find step by step instructions for these chameleons on her blog here: http://artolazzi.blogspot.com/2011/04/3-d-lizard-directions.html My kids used the same steps as we used on the bunny head to make the chameleon head They LOVED them. We watched these videos first, some of the other classes gave theirs sun glasses Some kids even made a cube cage for their Chameleons and I gave a prize to the one who could spell chameleon first! AND I will conclude with a random photo from one of my recent newborn photoshoots that has nothing to do with elementary art! This also keeps me busy! Is she not the cutest thing God ever breathed life into! www.shelbyjunephotography.com She makes my ovaries hurt!

Suzanne Collins biography, graphic novel style! Students should enjoy reading, right!? And there's a reason why young children love picture books: images are appealing. Do I prefer reading a graphic novel version of my favorite books? Not really. But, that doesn't mean none of my students do. In fact, I would say quite a few of them would prefer it. If I want my students to enjoy reading, I need to offer plenty of choices. The same with writing. Some kids are happy to write a classic book report. But some aren't. So why not give them choices? With the recent announcement on the Hunger Games Fireside Chat of Sara Gundell's comic-style biography of Suzanne Collins (author of The Hunger Games), (see picture) this reminds me that there are so many appealing ways to entice students to read rather than the traditionally printed book. I offer loads of choices in my high school classroom because we all have different tastes. I do love reading comics and have Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, Close to Home, and Frazz books for students to read. Of course I offer the classics along side them, but I would much rather have a student read something over nothing. We need to admit that it is OK to allow these choices in our classroom. Students DO learn from reading non-academia texts! Reading the Guiness Book of World Records is still helping my students' reading skills. How? Because they are reading! It doesn't matter what they are reading. The act alone and repetition of it makes them better readers. It is the same with writing. The more they write, the better writer they become. So why do we assign the boring 5-paragraph essay over and over again so they learn to hate writing? I don't know (well I do...because we are forced to). It's crazy. I would rather assign them more relevant and personally-connected pieces because 1. they will enjoy it, and 2. the chances of them copying & pasting text from the internet is less likely. Here's a free download for you: comic strip panels to use to assign a comic bio or book report. Download all of the pages here: I created them using Pasq.com's Comic Life program. The above is the loft bed I had in mind. I drew it out so my friends daughter, Nova, could approve. The look of it changed a bit since this drawing but is mostly the same. There will be a dresser tucked under the right side, the steps will have drawers, and the left side will look like drawers but would actually be a door. That last part changed though because I wasn't sure how well they would take care of the door (my friends kids are a bit rough with doors, haha!).
