Today was day one of week three and man oh man has it been interesting so far (aside from a kindergartener throwing up on my brand new carpet today)! As many of you know I started at a brand new school this year - so I've had to start from scratch with my art program! I'm not sure why I just expected that the county would give me additional money for start up supplies (scissors, rulers, etc.)... cauuuuseee that didn't happen. In fact every art teacher in our county lost $50 each from our consumable budgets! :/ Sooo $400 for 1,200 kids? Awesome. Fortunately for me I have a pretty awesome principal who seems sympathetic to my position. So when day one rolled around and I still didn't have my county money, I had to rely on my own wallet for supplies. I bought some printer paper, crayons, colored pencils, and markers and started brainstorming for lessons. After much thought I landed on 'Creative Letter Drawings' for my 1st graders (a lesson I learned from my supervising teacher during student teaching). I started by reading the book "Louise Loves Art" by Kelly Light. The book is about a little girl who creates her greatest masterpiece (a drawing of her cat) but then her little brother cuts it up and makes it into something else (his greatest masterpiece). Then we talked about the idea of taking something and transforming it into something else. That's when I told my students that I was going to give them a letter of the alphabet and it was their job to turn it into something else (I suggested an animal). After drawing an example on the board, my students got to work! I LOVE LOVE LOVE their creativity!! *Some of these are not yet complete - but I just couldn't wait to post about it! As students finished their artwork.. I gave them the 'Alphabet Challenge.' They got a piece of paper with all the letters of the alphabet on it and were instructed to add a creative drawing to as many letters as they could by the end of class. I got a couple of really cute pieces! :) My teacher's example.

Okay--I think I have admitted this before but here I go again, I dislike teaching writing. {Gasp!} I know, shame on me. Such an important part of a day in the life of a first grader. I'm contributing my dislike of writing to not be such a great writer myself growing up. One of my .unstated. resolution's was to become a better writing teacher. Well, let me tell you...this week I have jumped right in! Seems like I just hadn't found a way(in the past) that fit me or my students. While I was going through my writing folder desperately searching for ideas, I found a sheet that gave me inspiration and my writing lessons were brought to fruition! We started off this week talking about "story starters" and how important it was to catch your readers attention in the first sentence or two of your story. The anchor chart *fanatic* that I am made this: Here are the books I used that had great beginnings to show examples of interesting ways to start a story. The next day we picked a character to write our story about and described it using my 'Describe a Snowman' bubble map. I told them I wanted them to use their imagination and be creative. I showed them a few different type of snowmen (from clipart I found) to get their little wheels spinning. Their creativity came to life and describing is what they did! Our next step was to talk about the parts of a story: beginning, middle, end. We discussed these concepts: Beginning=story starter, character and setting introduction. Middle=give your character a problem. Ending=solve the problem and end the story. They caught onto this SOOOOO much better than I ever imagined! I created a worksheet for them to record their thoughts. After completion, we talked about the AND Disease! They thought this was HILARIOUS!!! I wrote and example of something like this on the board: When I read it they {laughed and laughed and laughed}! They thought I was crazy for using the word AND so many times. They were surprised when I told them that --they-- were actually the ones who were consumed by this disease! I had them go back and edit their papers for the "and disease", capitalization and puncuation. Our final day of writing consisted of completing our final draft. I had them transfer their edited writing and complete it by drawing a picture. I was in ~AWE~ after reading most of their stories....had I really taught them step by step with my own ideas!? Heck yes, I felt like I had hit the jackpot!! We will be at it again this week creating a penguin story to go along with our penguin unit! I'm hoping the process will be a little bit more independent (fingers-crossed)! This teacher is all smiles : ) P.S. If you made it this far, you can click on all the above templates and pick them up in my TpT store for FREE!

We pray for our owies every service in my class. When I say that its time to pray, each child wants to show me their owie that they want to pray for. It's quite adorable, nearly comical, to watch them search for the littlest scratch that they may have to pray for. They are actually disappointed when they don't have an owie to pray for. In that case, I tell them that they can help their friend pray for their owie. Before we pray I tell them to put their hand on their owie to show Jesus where it is, because He is the only one that can heal all of their owies. Their child-like faith is very evident in this moment, as they come to know Jesus as their healer. Bible Truth: Jesus heals me. Bible Story: Jesus heals a man who could not walk when his friends bring him to Jesus. Bible Study: Luke 5:17-26; Mark 2:1-12; 1 Peter 2:24; Psalms 103:1-3 teach Here are a couple different visuals to show as you narrate or read this story from a children's Bible. diorama drama This story also lends itself well to a 3-D diorama dramatization in order to show the paralyzed man being lowered through the roof. I created my diorama by inserting felt into a shoe box and then placing my flannel graph characters into the box. I made the paralyzed man and the bed according to the craft instructions found below. I tied yarn to the four corners of the bed, and used a craft stick on top of the box to hold the man in place after lowering him down. Release the yarn from the stick, so that after Jesus heals him the man can stand up, and "carry" his bed. (See the craft tutorial below.) bend and tell This is such a simple and genius way to tell this story! I have seen it a few different places, but I have no idea where the concept originated. All you need is four strips of card stock or tag board, a hole punch and three brads. I found the version displayed below here. http://kirstymcallister.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/in-memory-of-uncle-tom.html play four friend weave The four friends in the story did not give up on helping their friend. In fact their faith is quite commendable! In this game four children work together like the friends in the story. You will need: a pillowcase a doll or stuffed animal field cones or chairs Setup a few cones staggered across the room. Have all the children line up at one end of the room. Choose one child to be "Jesus" and stand at the other end of the room. Choose four children to be the four friends. Their task is to each hold a corner of the pillowcase, carrying the doll or stuffed animal, and weave around the cones to bring their "friend" to Jesus. If they drop their "friend" they must go back to the beginning. When they reach the end, have the child who is "Jesus" repeat after you saying, "Your sins are forgiven. Arise, take up your bed and walk." Everyone claps and celebrates, thanking Jesus for healing their "friend". Repeat, giving each child the opportunity to be a "friend" and/or "Jesus". craft coloring page Here is a coloring page to accompany this story. I suggest gluing four pieces of yarn for the ropes attached to the bed, and gluing a piece of cloth on the blanket covering the man. band-aid art In this week's story, Jesus forgives the man's sin and heals him. Print this simple activity sheet based on Psalms 103:2-3. Have the children color the heart, and then let them stick a few band-aids on the heart. Kids love the opportunity to put band-aids on by themselves! arise and walk This is the man and bed that I used in the diorama. The children can each make their own to take home and retell the story. You will need: this man template (printed on card stock) felt craft sticks scissors crayons glue hole punch brad permanent marker This man's legs did not work. He could not walk. His friends had to carry him on his bed. Jesus healed him! He forgave the man's sin, and told him to take up his bed and go to his house. To prepare cut out the man templates, and cut felt into 4 1/2" x 2 1/4" rectangles. Punch a whole in the center of the man's body. In class, help the children glue their felt pieces to craft sticks. Have them color the man, then attach the the man to the felt with the brad.
This delightful tissue paper craft is inspired by Eric Carle's story, "The Very Lonely Firefly." Kids will love making this project based on Carle's unique style.

When I did my student teaching in 1st grade, my mentor teacher (who was fabulous!) had this as a fun little writing project. I have used it every year in 5th grade and my students love it. The 1st thing the students do is turn their squiggle into a picture. Then, they write a story about their picture. Simple! Rachelle and I thought it would be fun to try this out on both our 1st and 5th graders and see how they turned out! 1st grade example from Mrs. Smith's class: She called this a Pegasus! How creative! A cute Kangaroo The snake in the backyard! Sounds like a book title Here's some examples from my 5th grade class: This snake is looks almost exactly like Rachelle's example. This one is all about bunnies. Look at the detail in this submarine picture! This is about 2 penguins. UPDATE: This product has been updated and has a nice and new look! Please check it out in my TeachersPayTeachers Store {HERE}! This pack includes 4 different squiggle designs plus 1 blank template. I have provided both a younger grades version with writing lines and an upper grades version with plain lines. (10 pages total.) Use the squiggle lines provided, or draw your own squiggle on the template before you makes copies, or let students draw their own squiggles. Either way, they will have a fun time doing this writing activity. This is great to have on hand for substitutes (perfect for emergency sub plans!), to use as fast finishers, or add it as an option for your writer's workshop.
Bible Story: Mark 10:13-16 What He has done: Jesus told the disciples to let the children come to Him.
I love felt crafts! Our smaller felt board has been one of my favorite DIY’s for the kids! Every time I shared pictures of it, people commented on how they were wanting to make one. So I thought I would put together a Large Felt Board Tutorial so you can see how easy and doable this project really is! The best part of this project is that it’s both art and fun for the kids’ room! If you’ve been thinking about making one… go for it! If you have a sewing machine you can easily sew the blue and green felt together, or to make this project EVEN easier, just do green! You need three things to get started: Canvas, Felt and a staple gun! Try to grab your canvas when it’s on sale or with a coupon. The Craft stores I shop at always have them. I got this one at Michael’s for 40 percent off and then 25 percent off my total order! So plan ahead and grab those canvases if you have this project in mind. FELT BOARD SUPPLIES: Canvas You can use any size you want! Just make sure to get enough felt to cover and wrap …

This week was our first week back and, boy am I tired! My class is great though...very inquisitive and eager to learn. They take their work seriously and are actively working most of the day. Who could ask for more?? We did quite a few things this week, but I want to share with you one "get to know you" project we did that really came out great. I seriously can't stop staring at it! I saw this pin on Pinterest. I love how it looks and thought it would make a great welcome sign. Now, on the pin, the hands seemed to be just colored in. I wanted something a bit more. So we started with creating Circle Maps about ourselves. What made us special? What are some things that have shaped us? Where did you go in your life? etc....Most of the kids finished these Circle Maps in class on the first day of school. I then asked the students to trace their hands and arms on a piece of 11 x 17" piece of paper. They then had to draw, write, decorate, etc...the traced in hand with items from the Circle Map. The goal was to teach their fellow classmates about themselves in a visual way, without giving away too much information (ie: I didn't want them to write paragraphs.) That is pretty much how far we got in class. So, the first homework assignment the students had to finish the project at home. I gave them this sheet so that they could be a bit more focused on their project and add a bit if they wanted. (but if you are going copy-less, just forgo this. They can write the information on a sheet of paper instead.) The next day, the hands came back to school...and they were great! I had the kids get into groups and share what they decided to put on their hands and why. The kids learned a lot about each other in that 15 minute session! You can see some of them used words as well as pictures to tell about themselves. I love the one directly in the center of this picture! Others just used pictures, like the one in the middle here. When I went to put them around a piece of poster board, like in the original pin, they didn't fit :( I think if I had used a smaller piece of paper to trace their hands to begin with they might have. Oh well! I decided to put them up as if the hands were all in a line, raising up.....and it came out great! I overlapped the hands, so I was able to get 5 or 6 on one piece of large construction paper. I then mounted them on my wall. I love it! All in all, this was a fun little project that served as a great way for the kids to get to know each other and make a nice display! What is something you do during the first week of school to help the kids get to know each other and for you to learn a little about them? Follow me on Snapchat for even more teaching ideas!
One of my favorite lessons to teach in my short story unit is the Hero’s Journey. I enjoy teaching the hero's journey because I love seeing my students’ aha! moments - the moment when they get it, and they start making the connections between the content I am teaching and their favorite books and movies. Their faces light up, and faint chatter about Harry Potter, various Disney movies, and other stories slowly fills the room.
